Maybe this will get more people to finish their games :lol:. I'll start it.

Dragon Quest 8 (J)

It's like 5 years since the original release of DQ8, and I finally saw the ending today. Back in the day, I was very hyped about its release (being a DQ fan) but the English demo really disappointed me. It didn't feel like DQ for the most part. The menus, viewpoint, and first person battles were changed. I also didn't like the music and voices (ewwwwwww) and that made me decide that I didn't want to touch the game with a 5 feet pole.

Back a month or so ago, I found out that the Jp version of the game didn't mess as much with the formula, so I decided to give the game another try. Well, they still messed too much with the formula, but I'm still a happy customer. Great graphics, character development, nice story, etc. Very good for the most part so let me cut to my 3 main gripes. First, the third person viewpoint is fine for large areas, but go anywhere cramped and it's a pain in the ass. They really should have implemented a field camera like DQ7, so much better. Second, battles take forever because the game loads between attacks and now you see your characters attacking. Third, some enemies attack you with you looking at them in first person but most don't, so part of the charm of the enemies is lost.

Well worth playing, but if you're an old time DQ fan, you might get a little bit disappointed. Play the Jp version if possible since you get the old music effects, menus, and original music and don't have to deal with so-so voice acting.

Silpheed : The Lost Planet (PS2).

My fiance bought a dirt cheap lot of 10 PS2 games off eBay (there was a couple of titles in the lot she wanted) and this came in the lot. I'd never seen the game before, but being a shooter, I hopped right on it.

Graphics : 5/10.....Your ship and the enemies are nicely detailed, but the 3D backgrounds look like a step below Gigawings 2. They move around ala Border Down style under you which I guess is cool.

Sound : 6/10....generic techno with basic sound effects. Not horrible, but nothing original or great either.

Controls : 7.5/10...Before each stage and during mini-breaks during the stages you get to pick which style of weapon you want on both your left and your right wing. There's quite a few to pick from and you gain new ones as the game progresses, so it does lead to a nice tailor made firing method for your ship. You can auto-fire both left and right, so this is what you'll be doing 99% of the time. However, no power ups and no bombs, so what you pick is what you get.

Gameplay/Mechanics 2/10....ZZZZzzzzzz, boring. Overall, the game is extremely easy and generally speaking, you'll only have a couple of enemies with minimal bullets ever firing at you and they go down easy. Popcorn enemies go down ultra-fast and rarely put more than 3 bullets each on the screen. Every so often a wave of fire or maybe a rock will fall over to avoid, but you could be using R.O.B., Nintendo's little robot to maneuver your ship and have time to avoid it. Scorewise, the closer you are to something when you kill it, the more points. Killing lots of thing quickly seems to activate some multiplier, but the game is simply to boring for me to attempt to figure this out in detail.

Overal....3.5/10..........Getting to set up a custom weapon system and switch it out often was a great idea. But after that idea, the game simply is a let down. It had potential, which is sad.

Spelunky vs. Spelunker

Well, Spelunker is clumsy and kind of bad (I played the arcade version a bit). Strangely enough I saw a picture of the MSX version in some transparent shell MSX clone on one of the evil pr0n JPN artist's blogs. SO yeah.

But Spelunky is mostly alright.

Graphics 9/10
It doesn't really get better than this for old-school style, but the girl's portrait in the secret challenge (woops) is kind of ugly, therefore, a point knocked off. Can you tell yet that this game looks awesome? Everything's pretty small but that way you get a good amount of screen real estate. Actually, there is a legitimate issue: resuming my computer from S3 sleep state leaves big nasty black bars along certain parts of the screen in the challenges, in the score room, and during level transitions, and sprites during the transition don't tile up like they're supposed to. But the actual main game is unaffected, and you can tell if you're getting kiss kiss anyway. Aside from the challenges, then, it's just a cosmetic issue.

Awesome, and I can't describe the feeling you get when you're listening to that clump of notes on the main dungeon theme when it starts to waver and you're not sure how many times it's looped. Is it about to start slowing down? When the music slows down, the pressure is on and you better run back for the girl, and the idol, and any merchants or cavemen you still need to sacrifice. WILL OUR HERO COMPLETE THESE TASKS IN TIME BEFORE THE GHOST SHOWS UP!?

It *seems* like there's some randomness, but mainly certain things are just really hard to pull off consistently, like jumping off a block and grabbing the one immediately above it. But this actually adds a lot of depth, because you can't just retard-bounce your way across levels; you have to judge whether you can spend the time attempting to make a jump, or consider tossing a sticky bomb to clear your path, or throw/drop a rope instead. Are there spikes? Is there an enemy up there? So many things come into consideration during certain moves. I do dock it a point because...damnit, it still feels random at times. But really it's excellent, and unparalleled (in my experience) depth to platforming.

Other Gameplay Mechanics

As you can see from the above, there's a lot of stuff going on. Merchants...those vindictive bastards. Slavers the lot of them. There are so many ways to kill them off, but even after killing 22 at one go in the challenge, I still get killed by them more often than not in the main levels. Even using all the tricks I know. They'll run up to you and punch you yards at a time, steal the shotgun out of your hand, and hit you with a jumping shotgun blast from across the screen. During the main game stages, things are often a bit too cramped to deal with them effectively - but it's still possible. They'll shoot right through the girl to get to you, even when they were trying to sell her. They need to be killed at all costs, on sight. Bonus: They'll abandon the goods in their shop if you blow out a hole or steal their shotgun and run out of sight. To make things easier, if you have the shotgun and they're starting to run away for the exit, get closer to them, which will lure them into running straight for you. Serve them two barrels of justice.

Overall:

The level progression is great. The sections of game get shorter, and more challenging, as time goes on - after maybe five stages at the first tileset, and a few more at the second, the scenery starts to change more rapidly and the challenges get more daunting. There's bosses all over the place, and while a shotgun is more than a match for all of the early ones, they still require some skill to find (and take down).

Jetpack and shotgun is a must, until you get the wand-thing.

Keyboard as well (turn off the down+forward run combo though, use a run key instead).

Quickly has become one of my favorite games of all time.

Rhapsody of Zephyr (DC)

Graphics: Good but sometimes monotonous.
On a scale of The Legend of Zelda to Chrono Trigger, I'm giving it a Phantasy Star III.

Sound and Music: The shattering wine glass and the piano were nice touches but the music was mostly forgettable and was annoyingly interrupted by the frequent load times.
On a scale of Breath of Fire 2 to Grandia, I'm giving it a Suikoden.

Story: I was very much into it although the ending took a turn for the strange. I'm going to assume that it would make more sense when taken in the context of the related Korean-only titles.
On a scale of Seiken Densetsu 3 to uh... itself, I give it the top spot.

Gameplay: VGA box is necessary to be able to read the text. UI stinks on account of moving a mouse pointer around with the D-pad. Loading breaks happen a lot, even in the middle of a character's attacking animation. Battle system is fun but slightly broken. Encounter rate is not bad.
On a scale of Lunar Magic School to Grandia 2, I give it a Lunar: The Silver Star.

Demon's Souls(PS3)

Best action RPG this gen. point

A gamer's game really,

no lousy 30 minutes conversations with supposedly 'intelligent' NPC - LOL @ Oblivion & Fallout

Amazingly challenging - LOL @ Fable2

Very deep combat & weapons system once you master it, makes for very authentic battles.

Highly innovative online play seamlessly integrated into the single-player experience

High replay value - I burned 269 hours on my first character & and now playing with a female chara which has about 90 hours on the clock.

Also atmosphere & level-design are simply top notch, especially the level design is very well thought out & has a lot of variation from stage to stage.

Oh and PvP-ing is sooo much fun

The graphics are nice for what it is - a sad & gritty 'dark-fantasy' role-playing game with integrated online functionality.


The bad points:

Well, IMO they are almost non-existent but I'll try to list what's "not so good" about the game:

1.A little laggy if connected with Japanese & Korean players, EXTREMELY laggy if connected with Chinese players.

2.There are a few typical FROM SOFTWARE trademark slowdowns n' glitches here & there but nothing game breaking

3.They bastardized the 'Sword of Moonlight'

9.99999/10

Wow, that sounded like some PR feature showcasing... Yes am a bit biased but it's really that good.

Graphics: It's easy on the eyes, but a bit retro and dated with the whole space theme. You do warm to it though, but you can't help but feel it was the first thing the designer stumbled on but couldn't ever be bothered to update it.

Playability: The selection of smileys is functional but a bit limited. The LOL smiley sucks because if you use it people can't tell whether or not you find their posts genuinely funny or you're just taking the piss. A few bugs arise when posting, especially when you click on image and colour tabs, which tend to stick the html at the bottom of your post instead of where the cursor is. It's easier to type them in manually.
You need to know your stuff to get the most out of the forum though - the crowd is pretty gaming hardcore elitist and will prey on you for errors, but by the same note offer very sound advice.
Overall the wealth of information available is a definite plus point.

Difficulty: This is one TOUGH forum, but at least it's fair. The moderators are excellent throughout, and tend to stay out of most threads - but are quick to lock things down and always offer good explanations. Anything that offends religious groups or ethnic minorities is a near guaranteed ban. There are a few bugs here and there (like banning Fighter 17) but they tend to be made up for quickly (banning Ceph.)

Value for money: The intellect of the posters tends to be quite high, which helps on all fronts: information, discussion, up to date news on shmups. Threads in off-topic can range from the idiotic (Bari-Arm is going to skyrocket!) to genuinely deep topical debates. Sometimes you encounter know it alls who enjoy the odd flame war - but it's a game forum, so what do you expect.
The trading station is one of the best around, with an unspoken rule amongst posters to keep it reasonable - some genuine gems to be found at genuinely great prices.
On the whole good fun, with some genuine LOL moments now and then, and lots of nice picture based threads.

A damn good alternative to other niche forums, and slightly more mature than both Neo-Geo.com and NeoEmpire. Probably as good as Arcadeotaku, but there are more posters on Shmups and hence more conversational topics to browse.
If you're prepared to take a beating now and then for putting your foot in your mouth, it's genuinely recommended.

Thanks for this review. Falcom translated the Windows version from Korean to Japanese. Been meaning to try it out. Might have better load times and cleaner graphics than the DC port.

My turn:

Tenchu 4 (Tenchu: Shadow Assassins in NA/Euro)
Wii/PSP

With the series hitting it's 10th birthday and back in the hands of it's original creators, Acquire, Tenchu 4 makes leaps forward in the series! For those not in the know, Tenchu is all about stealth, kind of like Metal Gear Solid but far more emphasis on gameplay, and in a detailed classical feudal Japan setting.

Graphics
Excellent. Attention to detail is stunning: aged wood with cracking paint, reflective water, plenty of trees, finely detailed interiors with non-repeating stuff on the shelf, etc. Only downsides are the oddly blocky bushes (compared to the ultra-fine surroundings) and some slight framerate dips in the PSP edition. In both incarnations, it is a gorgeous game, especially for their respective platforms. A huge step forward for Tenchu!

Another note - the artwork used for the game is simply fantastic.

Music & Sound
Sound effects finally get a refresh after using the same low-res Tenchu 1 sound effects for several titles. It's all in the detail - bones crack, wood creaks, grass sways. Everything is voiced and well done. Voice acting is superb for the most part. Rikimaru in particular is striking and has a very earthy, breathy, earnest, and very tired tone to his voice. Of note is how well they matched the English voices to the Japanese original. My compliments to the casting director - they hit the nail, and for once I can say you aren't missing out on anything by playing the localized edition.

Music, as usual for Tenchu, is spectacular, dramatic, and beautifully rustic. Cutscenes get appropriately timed music and stages have great tunes, using lots of cello, guitar, acoustic bass, koto, and drums. The introductory vocal theme is also a new height for the series.

Gameplay
Acquire really shook things up this time. Gone are the wide-open areas, swinging roof to roof with your grappling hook. The game instead focuses on a much smaller, more intimate and dense style. Instead of dozens of copy-pasted houses that you can't interact with, you are now inside intricately detailed houses, mansions, battlefields and caverns. And all that detail is not wasted - more than ever before you can hide under, above, around and inside things. See a set of dressers? Squeeze between them. A large vase? Hop inside. Shoji screens, rafters, bushes, walkways, ponds, rocks - anything. You can use it to hide.

Also different is the way the characters move. You can feel the heft of a real person now, unlike the weightless zipping around of the earlier games. Rikimaru makes noise when he lands, your sword clanks in it's sheath when you run, and movement is all around much more nuanced.

AI is leaps and bounds above the previous games as well. Enemies all have a line of sight that is linked to their eyes, not where their back is facing. So you have soldiers who can look side to side, crank their neck upwards, check underneath wagons, poke bushes with their sword, etc. A fun detail I noted was how the low paid hirelings are much less perceptive and don't care very much about what's going on, but the armored samurai will turn around and investigate if they even hear a footstep.

Combat is now a last-ditch effort instead of a common occurrence. The point is really to be seen as little as possible. Get spotted, and you either have to flee or, if you have a sword, enter combat. Fighting is done by taking turns - the enemy takes some slashes at you, and you have to use the Wiimote or PSP nub to defend yourself with your sword. Once the enemy's time is up, it's your turn to attack. This is really the oddest part of the game, and the only part I am not wild about. It works, but it's not as refined as the rest of the polished-to-a-sheen game.

Also available are a huge variety of stealth kills - now the only way to kill an enemy - no life bars here except in the sword duels. You can do the classic 'sneak up behind' technique, but you have a huge palette of options that are lots of fun. Throw a rock at a guard near a torch and he loses his balance, falling into the fire. Swim near a guard at the edge of a pond and pull him in. Jump from a tree and snap the guy's neck on your way down. Hang from the rafters ala Batman and lift the guard off the ground. Hook him with a fishing pole and yank him across a fire. Pull him off a cliff. Stuff him in a giant vase. And so on. There are so many ways to do your ninja-ly duties that it's almost boggling, and most of them you can do without a single item in your inventory.

Story
I don't want to give away a lot, but let it be said, this is not the same Tenchu. The story this time has lots of ups and downs, and a couple twists that catch you off guard leading up to one of the most devastating endings in a game. I really am thrilled to see how this continues in Tenchu 5 and 6 - yep, From has announced this will be a trilogy. :)

I like your review of Shmups.org, Skykid -- it is spot on. You never know though, Fighter17 could still be reading this or that he simply moved on to better things in life. ^_~

Every once in a great while a fellow shmupper will give away free stuff on the Trading Section. Can't beat that particular offer any ol' day. Still enjoying those cool Atari 5200 carts I sent ya? ^_~
