NES,SNES. Genesis andN64 Shmups For Linux and PC Engine Too!

Post by mjclark »

I finally took the plunge and went Linux only on my desktop.
I installed GFCE Ultra NES , ZSNES and Mupen64plus emulators and I'm having a whale of a time with Star Soldier, Star Force, 1943 and (best so far) Star Soldier Vanishing Earth :D so what other great NES, SNES and N64 shmups should I be playing?
...and is there anywhere on this earth a decent linux based shmup cos Chromium BSU doesn't really cut it...
...Ooooh!I've just got Gens emulator too so what about those Genesis classics?
...And now Hu-Go! emulator for PC Engine as well :)

NES has Life Force, a passable Gradius port, Gradius II (different and great on the NES), Abadox... and others

R-Type III on the SNES is awesome.
And, if you can get it to work right, on the N64 there´s Banagi-O.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Aside from emulation, look here:

S.C.A.T. is one of my favorites on NES (I've seen it brought up here under a different name, though.)

Super EDF on SNES is cool, too. I'd recommend Super R-Type as well, if only to crank up your stereo while you leave the sound test going. ;)

Hmm...the list of native linux shmups from that other thread really isn't up to much (unless you only want to play abstracts). There's nothing to rival the likes of Samidare or Reflex or even XOP on Windows...or does someone know different?

Here's an idea: See what people posted in their Top 25 lists this year!

I said earlier that I was going to add it to my Top 25, and I mentioned it's also known as Action in New York.

Super EDF always makes me blink because, whoops, it's not R-Type, but it's just as pretty wtf? I hate that section near the beginning of the game where two big ships circle around you and you can't shoot them both.

When using Project 64 for SSVE, I noticed some severe glitches- such as a tracer effect in the first scene of stage 2. Mupen 64 (Windows port) doesn't do this.

SNES-wise, Rendering Ranger is worth checking out. Manfred Trenz did want to make it 100% horizontal shmup stages at first, but he later decided to add some Contra-style sidescrolling action.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I'd also recommend S.C.A.T, classic. This reminds me of all the awesome stuff that didn't quit make the cut on my list this year.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.

So use the linux version of Mupen64?

Fire Shark and Truxton are probably my favorites on the Genny (the arcade too for that matter!); but there are many other great ones...

Twin Cobra, Grind Stormer, Elemental Master and plenty others I need to spend more quality time with. :)

Seriously... the hell were they thinking? I didn't even pick up on that until I was older, though (I was a dumb kid.) Killer game regardless...

"Scat Action In New York" is also known as Final Mission (JP version), with an added super-apocalyptic intro.

I'll second Blazing Lazers, and here are some more.

Gate of Thunder (CD)
Winds of Thunder aka Lords of Thunder (CD)
Star Parodier (CD) - Be sure you raise the difficulty by one setting, since the default is a tad easy.
Super Star Soldier
Final Soldier
Soldier Blade
Syd Mead's Terraforming
Kinect? KIN NOT.
