Friendly fire

Post by cools »

I'm sure there are some shooters that have a friendly fire mechanic from the players point of view (P1 can damage/kill P2 and vice versa), but are there any that have it for the enemies?

Was just playing Raiden DX and noticed enemy shots passing through other enemies, thought it might be an interesting game mechanic.

Would reflected bullets count?

Aside from that I can't imagine a shmup where enemy bullets effect enemies. Seeing as the programmer puts in all the ship paths/bullet paths they would have to purposely put in enemy friendly fire situations. It would still be pretty funny to see, but it wouldn't have the awesome feel you would normally get from an enemy killing another enemy in most other games.

Also there are a fair share of boss ships that do some heavy friendly fire on fodder ships when you show up, if that means anything.

In Ikaruga you can push the other ship around. This can result in pretty instant deaths, especially in Stages 3 and 4. I'd certainly count that as friendly fire.

Cho Ren Sha 68K's first boss. You can have the two bosses fire their cannons at each other, resulting in instant death for both.

Enemy capturing is about the only instance I can think of where enemies will damage other enemies.

Yup, that's probably the best first boss death of all time.

Hmm, now that I think about it...

Can one Moai head kill another in Gradius I? I think that just happened to me, although I could have somehow killed it with my option by accident.

Taking Raiden as an example since it's what I was playing at the time - the bullets are aimed, and their timing can vary, although not normally by a large amount. Some enemy paths are fixed (tanks), whereas others are simply timed (helicopters, jets). I've not worked out yet if the positioning of the timed enemys is related to your position on screen - it doesn't seem to be.

It'd be cool to be able to herd enemies and bullets into some sort of cataclysm for higher points...

In Sinistar, Warriors can and do sometimes shoot the Worker ships when they are firing rapidly to try to take out the player ship or are guarding the Sinistar.

In Gauntlet I and II (hybrid maze/shooter type game) demons can and do often take out other demons when they shoot towards the player but the demons are also grouped together.

Oh yeah, I forgot those magnet bullets. That would actually work.

Blazing star's second to last boss annihilates two smaller ships trying to get you with a big lazer.
