Edit: Is Gorgoroth ever going to get around to putting out another album? Ad Majorem whatever has moved way up to being one of my favorite black metal albums--sort of a perfect meeting point between death and black.

That's awesome. Prurient is pretty great, Hospital Productions has put out a bunch of good stuff and Ash Pool is pretty much exactly how I want my black metal. As for Gorgoroth, the members were fighting over who owns the name. I don't know when, if ever, you'll see a new album under that name. Here's a recent interview with Infernus.

Acid King> Hey, I should start bugging you for recommendations. I've hit this wall where I like this area in between Black and Death metal. The most recent album by Gorgoroth pretty much sums it up. On the Death side I love the heaviness of incantation but still dig all the speed which goes back to the classic thrash stuff (Kreator, etc.--hell, we can take it back to Slayer if you want...). On the Black metal side, oh hell, I guess it's mostly Gorgoroth, though I've enjoyed most of enslaved, some Dark Throne, etc. I'm gonna check out this band 1349 which sounds good, heavy and fast.

I do tend to check out a lot of your recommendations, since I think your knowledge of metal is far greater than mine.

Have you checked out Coffins? I'm not sure that I would consider them "black" but they do a pretty fine job of straddling some sort of line that exists between doom and death.

Check out Arkhon Infaustus. They do the death/black thing pretty well. Got the grumbly death metal vocals with some of the longer, black metal style riffing. Belphegor mixes the two up pretty nicely as well, though I haven't liked what i've heard of the new album. Arkhon Infaustus Belphegor

Check out M33 Constellation on the Arkhon Infaustus site and Hell's Ambassador on the Belphegor page. Check out the band Necrophobic too.

I mostly like the raw style black metal adn stuff that may more appropriately called thrash. That Ash Pool stuff is great. Nifelheim is pretty awesome. Anaal Nathrakh, especially the first cd, is crazy too.

Also, I gotta agree with gabe, Coffins is awesome.

Yeah, I just listened to some samples of Coffins and was pretty impressed. Some nice slow chug, but without getting boring (of course, samples don't bore, they fade out!)

Spent last night following a bunch of leads and found a few things which at least sounded interesting to my ears, namely 1349 (I ordered an album called 'hellfire'...the tracks sound pretty close to what I was looking for); but also couldn't help getting off on a thrash/speed diversion with some new band called SkeletonWitch. Oh hell, it may suck when I actually get to hear it, but nobody else is buying music anymore--and the samples and artwork looked nice.

I'm very tempted to grab up a coffins album, though I'm, um, downloading one of those full-length previews, yeah. As usual, if worthy, it will get replaced with a purchased copy.

Edit> Arkhon Infaustus...wow! Could be my next favorite metal band. Some fusion between Incantation and Disemboweled; do I hear some experimentalism in the mix? Must-buy-now!

Not much new on this end; that Henry Cow box I bought a couple months ago is still one of my best purchases of the year.

Skeletonwitch is a great band, I saw them with Municipal Waste last year and it was incredible.

I'm more a fan of super raw bm so I dunno if I could help you out, the stuff I listen to, I think Acid King would agree, is very inaccessible. Xasthur, Leviathan, Drudkh, Striborg, Mutiilation, etc.

Big Business' new album, anyone? I love it. Everywhere I read that its so horrible and that Big Business sucks now, but I love it. Any fan of the Melvins will dig it.

That style of BM is kinda like the black metal version of drone, people either love it or it bores the shit out of them. I go back and forth. Sometimes I think it's brilliant and dig it for the atmosphere it can create, sometimes I think a lot of bands use shitty production to cover a lack of talent or ideas. I was reading an interview with one of the guys from Nifelheim from awhile back that made the point that back in the day bands sounded like that because they didn't have money for good equipment or recording. Now there are bands spending thousands of dollars for recording equipment, guitars and amps only to try to make them sound like shit. Never really thought about it like that but it's definitely true.

Hahaha yeah I thought about that before, its kinda funny. Spending thousands on SUNN equipment, and ORANGE equipment, only to make it sound like the most staticy piece of shit.

Unfortunately they offer a cross section of different performers and eras, and I am interested in complete cycles of Chopin material performed by one person that are easily available.

I would like to make this post to signify the official end to my aforementioned "musical rut."

Every once in a while, I find an album that completely blows my mind on the first listen. This week, I discovered two of them. To further clarify this post, I feel that I should explain that I am writing with the clarity that can only be obtained from a night of drinking $1 Black Labels.

First, I would like to mention Skeletonwitch - Beyond The Permafrost... I have been familiar with this band for quite some time, but always passed them up for one reason or another. This thread made me give them a chance (thanks, CMoon). Beyhond The Permafrost is a rare modern thrash record that doesn't strike me as being "overproduced" or "gimmicky" or "derivative." So much so, that I decided to order a hard copy of the damn thing, along with a t-shirt.

Secondly - Aldebaran - ...From Forgotten Tombs. On paper, sludgey ass doom seems easy to "get right." In reality, it's not. This record has everything I am looking for from the genre; slow, powerful, and catchy - all wrapped into some sort of indescribably enticing package.

I LOVE that there is a user with a Residents avatar, and another user with the name ACID KING.

It almost sounds ridiculous and untrue, but I've been getting back into BORIS lately. As you can tell by my name, I'm a fan, but recently with Smile and some of that other shit, I jumped off the bandwagon. AMPLIFIER WORSHIP is still one of the heaviest albums I've ever heard. Those drumless tracks are brilliant, esp. VOMITSELF. Awesome name.

I agree that Smile was terrible, but Boris remains to be my favorite band. Amplifier Worship and Akuma no Uta are such great albums. Still waiting on the rumored Mellow Peak Merzbow collaboration.

These last few weeks I've been hammering Bowie's 'Man Who sold The world'. It's amazing quite how heavy this album is for its time, stands along side a lot of Sabbath stuff riff-wise, Mick Ronson happens to be, IMO, one of the most underrated guitar players of all time.

Therapy?'s new one, 'Crooked Timber' is proving pretty interesting as well.
