My next purchase for PS1/PS2 - which one to choose?

Post by Erik »

Hi guys,

During the past month I purchased four great shooters : Gradius Gaiden, Gradius V, R-Type Final and Thunderforce V. Now I am low on money and patience (my wife as well :-))! So I am considering to buy one final game... for now that is. Of course it has to be a quality SHMUP. I generated a wishlist for more visibility. What would be best in your opinion?

Gradius Deluxe Pack
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus (actually 3 games)
ShienRyu (Arcade Hits)*
Soukyugurentai Arcade hits*
Strikers 1945

Optional and lower budget:
Silpheed : The Lost Planet
Taito Legends 2

* For these Japanese PS1 titles I could find very little info, so maybe someone here can give me more reasons to buy/not buy that.

Just in case you're not aware, there are PS2 issues with two of those Gradius titles. Gradius Deluxe Pack won't run correctly on a PS2 (Gradius II will be slow). Of course if you've got a PS1, no need to worry!

Stage 7 of Gradius Gaiden ("On The Event Horizon") will run slowly on a PS2 as well, but otherwise it works fine.

The best of this bunch is definitely Soukyugurentai, though I don't know how the port for the PS1 turned out...

Souky really is an acquired taste imho, and definitely not mine.

Salamander Deluxe Pack/or the Gradius one (which is much cheaper) it should be.

Not entirely coincidental I have a Salamander Deluxe Pack I might part with.... ;) (I already have the best Salamander version ever in my collection).

Laat me ff weten als je geintereseerd bent!

Choosing from the list you made, I will go with Soukyugurentai or Strikers 1945.

Soukyugurentai is one of my favorite vertical shmups. I would go with that, myself.

Judging by the games you've recently purchased, however, I would go with Taito Legends 2 and Strikers 1945 [you should be able to get both of these for ~20$ total]

Shienryu is super generic and far too easy. Make sure that's the last game you pick up ;p

and hey, Raiden 3 and Castle Shikigami 2 would also be good choices.

2.5 games. One is basically an update, not the sequel kind.

I noticed that today indeed, while gathering more information about this package. Just like the other Japanese titles on my wishlist I did not know much about these games. Being a shooter fan though, the name Salamander sounded familair to me of course. The name was often referred to in reviews for other titles. I find reading reviews of shooters very entertaining as well and it helps to expand my knowledge on them. All together, it is not really a surprise that I now decided to go for the Salamander Pack as my next choice. I would also like to thank Super Laydock for helping providing some usefull tips on aquiring this title.

In general, the feedback on the forum is great and appreciated.

Because it never gets love I'll say get Silpheed. Not bullethell or anything but I always enjoyed it. You can find it dirt cheap new.

The PS1 port, while it has an extra mode and ship (though the only extra content I detect in the former is added voice), is graphically inferior to the Saturn version and has extra slowdown. Not unplayable, but if you're going to get the game go with the Saturn port.

I'd go for Taito Legends 2. It's cheap, therefore reducing the wife hit box. It also gives you multiple Darius games, which are not currently represented in your horizontal lineup.

That will definitely be the next one. The screen shots for Darius Gaiden and Metal Black look promising. And yes, the wife is a force to be reckoned with :) Actually it will only be my wife in November, when I will get married (wish me luck) :D !
