^Rayxanber II - Yes from what I remember it is indeed a bitch.

'Cause it hasn't been mentioned, 2-LOOP of Gradius IV. I got the 1cc 30 hours in, but 50 hours later and I still haven't 2-looped it. It can be done, though. The re-arranged stage landscapes and buffed up boss fights make it a pretty fresh challenge.
^You 1cc'd Gradius IV and your name's not tviks  - impressive!
That is one game I avoid for my health. For some reason Gradius IV induces the most violent game rage in me. Unlike Gradius III we didn't have it in our local arcades, so I'd like to see a Gradius IV replay.

Yeah, it's incredible how much the difficulty jumps between the second hardest and hardest settings in this game. It's like Psikyo second loop hard.

Last Resort has got to be one of the most difficult conventional (i.e., non-manic) horizontal shooters I have ever played.

Most of my shmup experience has been on MAME so I'd say DoDonpachi or Ketsui. As for non-danmaku, prob Progear no Arashi or R-Type Final.

After trying Mushihime Futari 1.5 last weekend, I have to go with Ultra mode as the hardest I've ever played.

The Genesis/Megadrive version of Slap Fight.

Well, at least the hardest one that always keeps me coming back for more punishment. :D

Shame the actual cart is so ridiculously pricey.

I thought Ketsui hasn't playable yet in MAME?
And +1 for Ketsui.
My list:
Gradius 3 (arcade version)
Ikaruga & RSG
R-Type
Batrider (especially triggering the special boss and damn sewer boss firing lightning fast tiny bullets), Garegga
1944
G Darius
Truxton II
Doujin shumps:
RefleX (yay Libra)
Cho Ren Sha
Touhou series (hey, have anybody mentioned it before?)
BWRP (Blue Wish Resurrection Plus) in hell difficulty & with TLB (??? stage in score attack)

It's not playable in MAME. harlequ1n said "most", not "all" of his play is on MAME.

Dimahoo and Ibara are both mind numbingly horrifically impossible, but that doesn't keep me away from either of them. I am horrible at Gradius Gaiden - just haven't sunk enough hours into it yet to remember the enemy spawns and safe spots.

So it's good that I got past the first boss on my first credit?

105,910...just seems like I need a bit of practice to be good at this one, not TOO many bullets obscured in explosions.
Edit: 375K on the third credit (the Black Widow plane is too big and seems useless) with the Swordfish, one-lifed and no-bombed the first stage no problem. Game IS hard, I'll say that much.

Bombing helps you score IMO, as most of the hidden bonuses is revealed when you do. I always play with Black Widow, but that boat stage (4 or 5?) is just freaking insane.

Saint Dragon, period. I don't mind playing hard games but this one is just stupid.

R-Type has been mentioned, but personally I find R-Type II the more difficult game. I can do fairly well in R-Type and Super R-Type, but I don't think I've beaten the first stage of R-Type II yet after 5 credits or so, even though I regularly play up to stage 4 on R-Type, Super R-Type, and stage 3 on R-Type III.

Gradius III arcade. Die once and you're definitely screwed.

Is Ultra leagues harder than God mode? Come to think of it, I don't think I've played a single credit of Ultra 1.5. I should entertain my curiosity.

DOJ WL.

Also to answer the above question Futari 1.5 Ultra is indeed way harder than God, though not as hard as its reputation indicates. 1.01 Ultra is a good deal harder though still fun with some of insane dodges you can pull off with the even smaller hit box you seem to have.

It is the strictest of memorisers, but dat music... :)

I'd probably say Futari 1.5 Ultra is still the hardest I've encountered.

Oh god. I used to play to about the beginning of st5 in Dimahoo on a credit, but last month, I decided to just credit feed the rest out of curiosity. It gets incredibly hard. You'd have to be a crazed inhuman memorization machine to finish that thing.

How come I always get addicted to the most impossible freaking games? :( That hard mode someone mentioned in Souky sounds like a blast though. I'll have to check that out.

Based on 360 shooters and ignoring difficulties like "ultra" it has to be DFK black.

It's super-stupid-ridiculously difficult.
To go "full-Plank" - colloquial - To experience disproportionate levels of frustration as a result of resistance to completing a task. Those who go "full-Plank" very rarely recover.

I expected you to say the "technically impossible" Futari 1.5 Original.
