Other Shmups like....
Can anyone recommend any Shmups sorta like the R-Type series, Giga Wing Series or Mars Matrix, also the Pachi games, or Mushihimesama. I like shmups that have a unique power system EX: Force and charge shots in R-Type, Reflect Barrier in Giga Wing, or The Laser in the Pachi games.

Would Air Gallet's really weird option system work out? Also, Mars Matrix has a barrier that you can use to capture enemy bullets and fling them back at them (I can't remember the name of that weapon off the top of my head, though).asrgames wrote:Can anyone recommend any Shmups sorta like the R-Type series, Giga Wing Series or Mars Matrix, also the Pachi games, or Mushihimesama. If you just want to go by "power" uniqueness rather than similarity to those specific games, you might want to check out:
Gaiares (Mega Drive / Genesis): lets you "steal" weapons from enemies by using a Force-like unit.
Blazeon (Arcade/SFC/SNES): Similar in spirit to Gaiares, except that you disable and commandeer the enemy vehicles.
Alpha Mission 2 / Armored Scrum Object 2 (Neo-Geo): Assemble armors featuring various weapons.
I wouldn't generally consider these as good as the games you mentioned, but they at least tried something interesting.
edit: also, Chimera Beast (Arcade; seems to be unreleased, but a prototype found its way into MAME): steal DNA from enemies to get various combinations of "mutations". Sort of like a multi-lateral version of the Gaiares system, and much more imaginative in general (though presumably inspired to some extent by R-Type and X-Multiply.

It is good. In fact, it's very good. The PS2 port however, not so much.asrgames wrote:What about Mushihimesama, is it like DodonPachi, is it any good?

It's not so much the hardware you're using as it is the way those games were ported over, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be anyway.asrgames wrote:What about using Componet cables
Except the loading times...
(although there is a way to make it better if you can play backups on your PS2, refer to http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=17808)
Either way, get it and have fun! (Or at least try to)
That depends how much a good game is worth to you. It's a worthy game. There are several modes that play very differently and the Ultra mode is insane even by manic shmup standards. Check it out on YouTube. If you like DoDonPachi then all of Cave's other manics are worth whatever you can reasonably afford. They just keep adding more bullets and shrinking the hit centers. Thankfully in Mushi holding the main shot button highlights your hit center because you'll need all the help you can get.
I think that strictly speaking, if it were one or the other I'd choose DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou over Mushihime. There aren't quite as many bullets but the ones there are are a lot faster and it just feels like a tighter game in general. Maybe I just haven't grasped Mushi's confusing chaining system fully but that's how I feel about it. DDP also has an added mode, an absurdly difficult boss rush called Death Label, so both games have tons of replay value on top of the fact that they're ridiculously hard and take a long time for even very good shmuppers to beat.

I think DDP is a better purchase than Mushi. I enjoy both and Mushi was certainly more noob friendly to me. I just think that there is more to DDP DOJ DP gameplay wise.
