4 different programs were used to make this video.Danny wrote:Thats one great video you did there kiken but do you mind me asking which programe you used to make the video? I've tryed fraps in the past but that requires the user to have fraps to be able to watch the video.
again thanks for the video!
The video capturing (from videotape to PC) was done in VirtualDub, as was the final compression of the video.
All video editing was done in Adobe Premier.
Captions, credits, masks and additional overlays/graphics were all done in Adobe Photoshop.
The commentary was recorded using SoundForge.

kiken that was absolutely incredible.
i was interested in the neo some time ago, but between the cost and the lack of verts and abundance of horzie shooters (which my eyes had yet to open to) i dismissed it as too expensive and just not fun for the games.
i was wrong. some of that stuff looks incredibly kick ass and certainly worth a try. thank you very much for the video, it was great.

Thanks for the video, Kiken.
Good:
Intros. Not really necessary, but I like that they were included.
Explaining in which formats the game is available and which was being shown.
Length of each game's segment.
Seeing multiple stages from games.
Seeing Brikin'ger.
Seeing Twinkle Star Sprites being played by someone who knows what he's doing (that is, not me the one time I tried it :) ).
[Made me want to look into a couple of the games I hadn't played or had previously written off. I think that's a positive?]
Favorite comments:
Everything regarding Ghost Pilots. (5:51-9:10)
Ninja Commando - "Yes, we're going to need to attack dinosaurs, tanks, and ninja because those things go together and eventually they'll all merge into one." [There you go, Minzoku] (14:06)
Viewpoint - "Ahh, kids die! ..." (24:34)
Sonic Wings 2/Aerofighters 2 - "... take out all those kids, that's awesome." (51:14)
Pulstar - "...this pretty much is sort of a 'R-Type Shin Hyper Complete 2.0 For Matching Service'." [thanks, Skyline] (78:00)
I did not feel the lack of a script harmed the commentary overall.
Negative... ish: voice balancing, which has already been touched upon.
If there is another video for another system, I want more jokes about killing children. ;)

Wow, you're pretty cruel with your reviews, dude. ASOII didn't look too bad to me, but it's your video so...
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I watched this video today, nicely done. Although I'd have been less harsh on ASOII/Alpha Mission II, but hey that's just me.
Surprised at how manic the Neo version of Strikers can get, I never did see that one in the arcades anywhere.

I had the good(bad?) fortune of playing it on that difficulty at my school, before they took it away. That's why it was strange when I played it in Japan and it was so much easier, considering I thought the difficulty would be higher in Japanese arcades. Now I found another one at Pier 39 at Fishermen's Wharf that seemed to be at that difficulty level(Kiken's video).Thunder Force wrote:Surprised at how manic the Neo version of Strikers can get, I never did see that one in the arcades anywhere.

I was playing the game on default MVS settings, which must mean that some arcades turn down the difficulty to either 3 (Normal) or possibly 2 (Easy) stars.IlMrm wrote:I had the good(bad?) fortune of playing it on that difficulty at my school, before they took it away. I have noticed though that the default settings for Japan and The West are different.
One other thing, despite the fact that I do not personally like ASO II, I did give it an above-average score (6 out of 10) in the video. I just feel that it pales in comparison to much of what else the Neo has to offer (save Ghost Pilots).

Thanks a lot Kiken! Good job!! Your video returned some of those poor babies which had been collecting dust on my shelf for the last couple of years to their original purpose.
Also, Blazing Star looks so awesome!! Owning only a Neo Geo CD, I had never seen its greatness before. Why is there no CD version?! Will I need an AES just for this??? Why God, why?

6 of the 16 shmups shown in the video are available in cart format only:Ceph wrote:Also, Blazing Star looks so awesome!! Owning only a Neo Geo CD, I had never seen its greatness before. Why is there no CD version?! Will I need an AES just for this??? Why God, why?
Prehistoric Isle 2
Captain Tomaday
Strikers 1945 +
Operation Raganarok/Zed Blade
Andro Dunos
Blazing Star
After finally being able to sit down and compare the cart and CD versions of Pulstar side-by-side, I came to the conclusion that Blazing Star just would not have turned out well on the Neo CD. Pulstar does well enough, but even then, the Neo CD rev suffers from a lot more slow-down than the original cart. You also have to take into account that Blazing Star is 2-player simultaneous with a selection of 6 different ships. In the end, I just think it would have been too much info on a per-stage basis... and mid-level loading (like in Metal Slug 2) would not work at all in a shmup.
And you do have the choice of going MVS... which is certainly cheaper than AES.

Kiken, I'm enjoying the video. Thanks again for taking the time to put it together.
There are actual gameplay (speed) differences between Pulstar CD and cart? That's the first time I've seen that confirmed. Damn. I have always enjoyed the CD version more due to the super-clean soundtrack, but never got good enough at the game to notice what you did. If I have to stick to the cart to get the full experience, that's disappointing.
