For me it has to be the Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1. The technicaly the first game I bought with my own hard earned cash I was still getting allowance from the rents for a long time and when I got my first job I bought a PS1 chipped FFT, parasite eve and some bizare JP game with mecha suits which turned in to bikes.
When I sold the PS1 I kept the FFT and I adore this game. It was my first tactics grid RPG and I adore the genre.

Speed Power Gunbike? I have that too. It's pretty cool, but admittedly I haven't given it enough attention. HG101 has an article about it.Lordstar wrote:...and some bizare JP game with mecha suits which turned in to bikes.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Hexen (PC) (1995) for sure!
This was the very 1st PC game I bought original back in 1995. I spent 3 weeks worth of pocket money to buy it and a 6x speed CD-ROM on my good old AMD 486DX-4 100 just for this and it was sure worth it as it's one of the best games I've ever played! No other FPS can match its dark sinister story line, imposing atmosphere, awesome weapons, incredible soundtrack, not to mention its great length and non-linear gameplay. It took me 6-7months to complete, solve all riddles & discover all secrets in Titan mode. (No cheats!
)
The Warrior's weapons, especially the metal gauntlets' splat sound when punching the enemies heads off, the badass demonic sword Quietus with the runes engraved on it, which tears the enemies apart, the Titan's Axe, and the evil spirit summoning rod that feasts on your enemie's flesh & soul! Modern FPS/RPGs just don't provide weapons of such satisfaction.
What added even more to the cool experience, was playing through the game during one of the coldest winters of my childhood years. The sky constantly beeing grey and cloudy, same as it was in Hexen, made me feel as if I was actually "living" the story and being chased around by Korax's two-headed scum minions

Hexen also bugged on me in Titan difficulty mode, where a gate leading to the Arch-bishop/scorpion Boss would not open even though all objectives were complete. In Hard difficulty I did not encounter any bugs however.
I was not running the latest patch at the time, as I did not have Internet in 1995-2996, so this issue might have been fixed.
I faced a similar bug in Hexen II at the Egypt world, where another gate leading to Famine Rider Boss would not open. I was forced to use the pass through walls cheats. Interestingly enough, the official update patch did not fix this back then!
I encourage you to use the update patch & Doomsday OpenGL upgrade (Without the horrible 3D enemy models) and retry Hexen. The lens flairs and hi-res textures look awesome. I completed Death Kings of The Dark Citadel Expansion using Doomsday and it was great!

Anyone who played Penguin Adventure back when it was new have this feeling when playing it again these days.Super Laydock wrote: It's the 1 game that ALWAYS makes me feel well, happy and to these days: young.

It's really one of the most fantastic games ever done at that time. And it indeed gives a happy vibe even though the plot is actually kinda sad, and its "normal" ending is the most fucked-up thing I've ever seen in a game.

Going a bit OT but there's a few gems, so i'm going to do it based on computer/console.
PC: Little Big Adventure - fricken amazing game!
SNES: Zelda A Link to the Past, Flashback
N64: Super Mario '64 and close second Diddy Kong Racing
Arcade:
Pre-Jamma: Zoo Keeper, Major Havoc or I, Robot (the first ever 3D game)
Jamma: Black Tiger, Vulcan Venture/Gradius II
As to overall what i'd never sell... It would be Major Havoc and I, Robot plus my Atari prototype arcade machines.

I'm such a cold-hearted bastard that I'd sell any game.. I even sold my Penguin Adventure (along with my other MSX stuff) to buy an Amiga!
Then again, after playing through a pirated copy of Killer 7 (PS2) which my friend forced me to play even though I was reluctant ("hell, you have try this, it's like, Resident Evil 4 was just Capcom's technical rehearsal for this, the real deal!"), I felt that I had just witnessed something divine and bought the game. But I'd still sell it if I needed money.

I think it was like the third game I bought for the MSX (after "Eric and the Floaters" and "Yie-Ar-Kung-Fu 2"), and at the time I didn't realize Penguin Adventure was exceptionally good, I was just amazed how all other games were so lame in comparison! Later on I learned that it was indeed a fluke, a one-in-a-million game. But that experience taught me to buy Konami MegaROM:s. I was practically playing Penguin Adventure, Salamander and Knightmare II: Maze of Galious (which is the fluke ever, even better than Penguin Adventure) for years - without any need to buy new games, because they could never match the genius of these.Shatterhand wrote:It's really one of the most fantastic games ever done at that time. I don't really have firm attachments to a lot of my newer games, but there are a few I would never get rid of
R-Type Delta - just a pain in the ass to find a good copy and the game is amazing.
All my Final Fantasy/Chrono games for the PS1.
For Gamecube, I would certainly balk at trading away the Zelda anthology disc that was distributed as a promo before Wind Waker came out.
My most cherished games are all old NES games that I saved a ton to buy as a kid. As far as collectibles, they're probably not worth much, but they all have labels on them that have been there since my parents told me to affix them back in the late 1980s/early 1990s. They're also numbered in the order I bought them (Super Mario Bros., Kung Fu, Ice Climber, Zelda, Mega Man II).
I'm generally lazy about selling anything, so a lot of games, good or bad, will end up being laid up with me for years. I should probably just sell that horrible Contra Force cartridge and get it over with.
EDIT: Can't believe I forgot to mention that I'd never sell my first shmup - 1942 for the NES. That game made me nuts when I was a kid.

Although I think Penguin Adventure is the better game, Maze of Galious indeed is another one that simply doesn't seem to fit the time and the hardware it was made. It's bloody brilliant indeed.Knightmare II: Maze of Galious (which is the fluke ever, even better than Penguin Adventure)
Edit: and its ending actually make sense and it isn't stupid.
SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED PENGUIN ADVENTURE SPOILER
when I finished that game for the nth time, and the king says "It's too late, she's dead", I felt like saying "Dead my ass, I didn't fight all those monsters, jumped holes, killed bats, dodged lightining from the skies, swimmed trough frozen rivers and all that shit so she would DIE! She's going to EAT THAT FUCKING APPLE, I AM GOING TO FORCE IT THROUGH HER THROAT , AND SHE'S GOING TO LIVE AGAIN GODDAMN!
Only with the internet I found out the completely stupid way to see the good ending.
END OF SPOILER

Re: the game you'd NEVER sell, no matter what.
No doubt about it: Viewpoint for the Neo. I'm probably this game's biggest true fan in the world. If I was able to win the lottery or something, and it was conceivable, I'd probably spend a ridiculous amount of money to get the original team back together, give them a year, and see what kind of righteous sequel they'd come up with. Of course, I've got some ideas of my own...Super Laydock wrote:So I've been selling off some stuff lately too fund a holiday.
But I was thinking of all the (+- 1000 or so) games) I own, really what would be the last I'd give up and would like to keep on forever.
Not necessarily the best game, or the rarest, or whatever, also counting in flair, packaging, emotional relation with it, etc.
But, what would be the 1 game I'd keep till I die (dramatizing drumroll)? ie my most valued game possession...
no, it's not a shmup.
In fact I'd sell all my shmups if necessary, but will never consider giving this one up.
It's the 1 game that ALWAYS makes me feel well, happy and to these days: young.
Penguin Adventure.
So what's yours?
Just the 1 game you'd NEVER sell.
(reasons why are appreciated!)
This game, more than any I've ever played, captures me and owns me on all levels. I think, per pixel, Viewpoint's got more personality than any other game I've ever played. It's got some balls-to-the-wall challenge, it's gorgeous, the music *is* the best VG music I know of, the controls are spot-on *perfect*, the secrets in the game are terrific and skill-dependent...if it's not perfect, then I don't have any higher standard than this.
Another friend of mine on this board (ROBOTRON) told me recently that his Neo console stopped working, and therefore he couldn't play Viewpoint. That, to me, would be an unacceptable thing...I'd have to change that. Unbelievable torture.

Personally I like LB1 over LB2...gameplay seems just a tad smoother. Plus, i think the artwork is a little better too. And I am sure there is some sentimental value to my feelings as well, as LB1 was the first "expensive" game I ever bought.antron wrote:so you think I should get LB over LB2?Egg wrote:For me it is my Japan Neo Geo AES game Last Blade.

Honestly though, they are both fantastic games and you really need to have both of them....but if you only could get 1, then yes, I would recommend LB1 over LB2.
Games I adore and will never part with even if I never play them again.

Haha, it's madness. The first time I completed it, I got the "good end" accidentally, i.e. I had happened to met the criteria. The next time I completed it, the princess was dead! And every time after that! I kept telling people that I'm sure I got a different ending once. I tried using all the possible warps and space wings but no... then years later I read in the internet what the requirement was. GRRRR Konami damn you!Shatterhand wrote:
