80 games for US consumption? no way.

Since God OF War 2 there hasn't been a single release on the ps2 I have even looked at.

The PS3 is a different beast altogether. There will not be 80 releases on the PS3 simply because there is not 80 studios worthy of a PS3 title that can break new ground. Since games are about pushing nextgen consoles on homes these days you won't see games of average technicality, although you will see lots of games with average gameplay or artistic merits.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

You think there will be 80 original games released on the PS2 in 2009?

no. I doubt there will be 80 releases, period.
I especially doubt your suggestion that thee will be many (80?) Best Hits releases.

This is only happy for me if it drops the price of the JP slimlines (still want a white one).

And not to mention that the lowered price has already shown up at major retailers (Amazon, Wal-Mart, Gamestop, Best Buy etc.)

I recently replaced my modded PAL PS2 which I purchased in 2002 (before I was 18; had to get my mother to hire-purchase it for me) which was like, $500 or something absurd. I feel bad that I'm replacing it but I shouldn't have an affection towards hardware.

I also have a white, slim NTSC-J PS2 but I don't really like slimlines at all. I think placing discs in from the top is a bad idea, even moreso if you have it sideways.
never had any trouble with my 2, sideways or flat

Hey, my PS2 sounds like it's sick half the time, so rather than modding that, I could get a $99 PS2 to mod. If I ruin it because I'm a noob, no big, I'm only out $99, right? Actually, I might just buy a new one as a backup, since my actual used PS2 (that my wife paid more than $99 for 3 years ago) does sound like it's about to die half the time.

Why mod? jps2 is cheaper and you can enable fast loads on ps1 games

You guys know you can about the modchip on a memory card thing right? Look it up. If you have an official Sony memory card you're all set. It doesn't work with PS1 games, but for PS2 games, it's the way to go. (it can't boot imports directly, but you want to leave those in their cases anyways, right?)

I don't mind the discs. Just keep them all in a disc binder nearby and it's easy to swap out. Usually one stays in for a little while anyways, and then you don't have to go into any sort of a menu to choose which game to boot up.

This only works with certain 2D games...games like Street Fighter Alpha Anthology or Darkstalkers Anthology won't work on it...yet.

get your facts straight....with HDloader0.8c pretty much everything works, 2D or otherwise....the games that wont work off the HDD are few and far between....and often not worth playing anyways

as for the anthologys....why would you want to play a mediocre port when they are emulated perfectly?

Yeah you can do it with any PS2, it's in the options menu. When I had one with a modchip though it wouldn't let me because the chip requires you to hit the reset button, and you need to turn it on each time you use the ps2. There's an option to improve textures in ps1 games also

I would just get a japanese ps2 on the cheap and buy only japanese/asian region games. Ps2 is literally the best ever for fighters, shmups, platformers, puzzle, and I haven't gotten into racing games in a big way but probably those too.

Chipping is better because then you don't have a redundant console around.

Pretty weak chip, then. My Matrix Infinity modded slim will let me go into the system options and direct boot a disc afterwards.
