Sorry, had to say it.

What!?
Yawn...
I 2nd this. There's ALWAYS been hype around games and gaming. FatCobra - did you not read any gaming publications produced during the 80's & early 90's? You say you're an "N" fanboy - read a few old issues of Nintendo Power and you'll see hype to the "Nth" degree (sorry, pun intended). Anyway, hype always has been and always will be a part of the industry. You can't deny it, and you certainly can't stop it.
I personally think you're reading too much into it. Gaming is a hobby, not a way of life. It's like the people who get so much into black metal that they burn churches and kill people. That's when it's time to take a step back and realize that you stepped way over the line. Or like any other obsession that is taken too far and people get hurt, be it physically, financially, emotionally, whatever. You're allowing something like the mainstream gaming world to affect you in a negative emotional way. Let it go.
Remember, there was a time when shmups were "mainstream" as well. THey were big-ticket items in the NES/Genesis/PCE/SNES era and sold quite a few units (evidenced by many copies of Gradius and the like available in used game outlets. The mainstream of today's gaming climate may be different from when you and I were younger, but the fact that certain genre's of games are more popular is the same.
The point is, you're making too much a big deal out of this. As has been said, save your $$ for a new SNES and get back what you feel is essential to your collection. Play those games again and revel in their greatness, remembering the fun you had as a child. Let the emotions that surround your gaming experience be positive (not all this negative outpour), and you'll find it to be a much more fulfilling hobby.
