RQ: Getting mad trying to setup battle garegga...
To apply zakk's patches, you will need an IPS patching tool (should be easy to find for whatever platform you're on). Unzip the Japan Garegga rom (used to be a clone, but with recent MAME it's the parent) and apply the patches for prg0.bin and prg1.bin. You can then zip the romset again and it should work, though MAME will complain about checksums being wrong.
You don't need those patches if you're just playing on MAME right? What exactly is it you're trying to do? Regular MAME is fine.
If you have a MAME .127 or later, get the cheat.zip here. Otherwise, cheat.dat from here. Put this in the base MAME folder. Now you can go to cheats in the menu and enable stuff like "watch game rank" if that's what you want.
Tips:
- You can make a save state on the ship selection screen and it does work. I recommend it so you don't have to watch the slow startup every time. There might be some graphics corruption at the very beginning but it quickly goes away and doesn't affect anything.
- Another way to select extra ships is to enable them in the cheats menu.
- Another way to select ABC is to wait for time out. This works well in conjunction with the save state because you can save it so one second of waiting gives you ABC, which is enough time to move to another ship and select a type if you need it. Or you could just fast forward.
