Because the game stores want to make as much money as possible selling as much crap as possible. Hiring game-know-it-alls would hurt their business since they would steer customers away from the crappy games.GaijinPunch wrote:I hear they fire people that know too much about games.

Yeah, they prefer people who know a lot about Persian pottery and handicrafts.GaijinPunch wrote:I hear they fire people that know too much about games.

Seriously, they tend to not like the gamers so much because the gamers don't sell like they want people to. Gamers try to sell the games they like, and will honestly tell a customer if a game they're looking at is bad. That's not company policy.
Company policy is that everything on the goddamn shelves is a 24k gold Holy Grail of gaming that the customer can't live without. As are preorders, accessories, and buy-our-used-crap "club cards."
Hit the ship right in the hitbox right there Cthulhu. You know what's worse though, someone buying a crappy game and then comes back later asking if they can trade it in, only to find out it's only worth $2 in credit. I hate trading stuff in because I know they are ripping me off. With all the crap out there and my stupid mom selling my SNES, sometimes I want to hang up my controller for good.....Cthulhu wrote: Company policy is that everything on the goddamn shelves is a 24k gold Holy Grail of gaming that the customer can't live without. having worked in a game store in the uk for a good while this isn't just something in the usa. i ended up leaving as i was being forced to puch sports title 100087 rather than that latest good game. i got a telling off for putting the street fighter anniversary on when there was some crappy harry potter or something that could be plugged.
life's a bitch. get over it

Hey circuitface, what did they fire you for? For suggesting that a soccer mom buy her kid a copy of Gradius V instead of some lame movie-license game?
If so, well at least you made some kid really happy.

Heh, I actually worked at EB for about two years, so I know what it's like quite well.FatCobra wrote: Hit the ship right in the hitbox right there Cthulhu. Unfortunately, 99% of the EBs and Gamestops out there aren't like that. Damn you "company policy."

Damn true. Nobody was stopping this woman from buying a SpongeBob Squarepants game for her kid. I didn't stop her either. I feel bad now.Cthulhu wrote:Company policy is that everything on the goddamn shelves is a 24k gold Holy Grail of gaming that the customer can't live without. I remember being "advised" not to buy King of Fighters cause the graphics were crapFatCobra wrote:Better him telling you at the store than you running home and finding out you blew $50 on a pile of crap.Andi wrote:The last thing I want is some twit know-it-all employee telling me that the game I want to buy isn't good.

What's funny is, I worked at Funcoland when they were taken over by Gamestop. The day they were going to fire the manager for stealing/selling bootleg games, which they couldn't prove, they had everyone that worked there take a day off and they brought managers and employees from another Gamestop and had them run the store. When I was waiting to be interviewed by the Loss Prevention guy, they had ME,a guy who worked there for 6 months, cleaning windows and cabinets, and the douchebags from Gamestop running the register and helping customers. on top of that, everytime they had a transaction, I have to get up and put my password in to the computer because they didn't have their own. I quit in protest.circuitface wrote:Well gee golly gosh darn it i just didn't see that one comin'!

They (these stores and the people responsible for hiring) need to start realizing that just because someone knows a lot about games doesn't mean they'll be a know-it-all jackass.
I know a lot about games, but I don't treat people who know less than me as stupid. That's just rude...and strangely, is something that many university professors do.

I think that's one of the reasons i never got hired when i applied last year. I gave a 2 page long list of my collection and experience w/ gaming. I never heard a word from them....go fig.GaijinPunch wrote:I hear they fire people that know too much about games.

Yeah, Wal-Mart is Gamestop's number-one competitor, however I do agree that Gamestop is attempting a monopoly. On a slightly related note, my district manager recently got moved to the corporate office with the position of "Hot-Title Coordinator".Cthulhu wrote:Yes, Gamestop bought EB, but no, it's not a monopoly. Not by any stretch. Wal-Mart has a larger market percentage than EB and Gamestop combined.FatCobra wrote:It think all the EB Games are going to become Gamestops. If so, I smell a monopoly!!!

As with any customer service job, I'm sure they care much more about customer service skills and retail experience than how much you play games.Sundance wrote:I think that's one of the reasons i never got hired when i applied last year. So, I guess the lesson here is if you want at job at a game store, LIE about your gaming experiences. Apparently they want people who don't know a fucking clue about videogames.
And for those that do still work at such places, do you people die a little inside when you sell a crappy cartoon/movie tie-in to some kid or his soccer mom? Or when they trade in a shmup because they think it's too short repetitive?

interesting, i've filled out apps for gamestop and the past and been totally honesy about my console experience. maybe thats why i never got a call back.
also, i have made it perfectly clear to some of the employees how ridiculous their answers are to questions like, "which is better ps2 or xbox?" friggin fools...
its also really sad because this gamestop used to be great. the manager and employees were all really nice and helpful. apparently there was some sort of sales shortage and they blamed it on the manager and fired him. then the replacement they brought in from another store fired all the old workers and brought in the people he had on staff from his previous location. the manager also seems to be in the habit of straight hiring friends... which made me mad at the time, because we weren't.

I have no sig whatsoever.
A couple people asked why i got fired. Usually i refrain from talking about personal drama - especially in a situation such as this - because 'everyone's got a story to tell' if you know what i mean.
Everytime someone gets fired from a job they run around bitching about it for days on end and usually they exaggerate what had actually happened. In my case what happened would acutally seem like an exaggeration on my part and so i kinda would rather not say anything.
I will anyway, though - because i know your curiosity has been piqued by the above statement. I'll keep it short though.
My manager was supposed to stop a box from finalizing. He didn't and the store was short 104 games. To save his own ass he told the District Manager it was my fault - even though i had absolutley nothing to do with it. The DM wouldn't listen to me (probably because i'm a long-haired hippy boy) and told them to cut me off the schedule.
Anyway - i couldn't do the limo thing because my girlfriend found out that i'd have to chaperone for strip clubs and high-class prostitutes sometimes. That's understandable - so now i work for Chevron again. It's good, though because i get lots of overtime and better pay than EB. Plus it's just nice to have a 'manly'-job again, y'know (no offense, ladies).
