I go every year to this California Extreme show. Just got an e-mail from Mark Birsching, saying that it will held at the Santa Clara Hyatt Regency Hotel this time around and not at the San Jose Convention Center (which would be at the Parkside Hall of course).
That's cool to bring two of your Astro Cities, Low.Blow. If the PCBs inside them are shmups, then all the better. ^_~
There is talk about have a seperate room just for shmups next to the CAX show -- kind of a Shmupalooza fest if you will. That would be cool to see others bring some of their candy cabs with some choice arcade shmup PCBs for others to try out. Dave K. was trying to see if others would be interested in bringing some arcade shmups to the 2007 CAX show but plans fizzled. I'm all for it this time around. ^_~

The vertical cab will definitely have a shmup in it. If no one else is bringing it, I could drop ketsui in there, or bakraid?PC Engine Fan X! wrote:I go every year to this California Extreme show. Not sure if I'll put a shmup in the horizontal cab or not. Maybe progear, in the hunt, or boogie wings? I may throw dolphin blue in there though...
Probably going to bring an egret 29 with heavy barrel, too.
I think I'll keep the games inside the cax event for the admission discount. I don't really have "teh rare" or super new shmups that you guys haven't already played anyway.

No Cave arcade shmup titles have ever been shown at the past CAX shows except for the lone Cave arcade puzzler of Uo Poko. ^_~Low.Blow wrote:The vertical cab will definitely have a shmup in it. So you could bring Ketsui to the 2009 CAX show, that would a first in the history of CAX, Low.Blow. I've personally attended all the past CAX show with the exception of the 1997 and 2000 shows. Always something new and cool to see and try out, especially with rare and prototype arcade games. ^_~

Re: CAX date announced.
If you scroll down to the very bottom of page 2 of this thread, you'll see the "final" California Extreme vector T-Shirt design (which looks awesome btw):
http://www.caextreme.org/forum/index.php?topic=121.15
The CAX staff has decided to go with flourescent inks that will make the vector images glow under UV lighting for that extra coolness factor. This reminds of the days when you could wear a white T-Shirt playing on the 1982 Bally Midway produced Tron upright cabinet and with the cool built-in blue UV lighting setup, your shirt would literally glow -- looked even better in a darkened arcade atmosphere setting. ^_~
In previous years of CAX, all the arcade games and pinballs would be shut down a little after 12am on Saturday midnight. For this year, the time has been extended to Sunday morning at 2am. That is two extra hours of solid arcade gaming and pinball fun -- enjoy them while they last. ^_~

That shirt design is awesome. And I'm stoked about going tomorrow, I'll be wandering around, my badge will have Arasoi printed on it for those interested in meeting, I'll be keeping my eye out for you PCEX, I'll be disappointed if you aren't in a perpetual state of winking all the time

Re: CAX date announced.
Ol' PC Engine Fan X! here, a CAX attendee veteran, attended both days of the 2009 California Extreme show. Did spot Arasoi's Moonwalker PCB in a friend's cabinet -- was the only MJ related game shown period. Too bad there wasn't any Cave shmup love present at this year's CAX show. Perhaps next year, hmmm?
They did have an 8-player linked up Midway's San Francisco Rush 2049 Tournament Edition -- quite a blast to race against seven other total strangers. ^_~
Someone brought in a cool Sankyo produced Julie pinball themed pachinko machine with a couple of pachinko ball trays to hold/store them pachinko balls by the hundreds. It was an interesting novelty to try it out. (Go inside a real Japanese pachinko parlor and you be assaulted by cigarette smoke that reeks to the heavens and super noisy -- this I know because I've been inside one once.) The owner of this Julie pachinko machine said that he bought it from pachinko-slots.com site. I told him that I had seen a Julie pachinko machine for sale on eBay...his response was that there hadn't been one up for sale in a while though. The crisp LCD monitor housed within the center of the pachinko game was quite razor-sharp and impressive. ^_~
I took some high-res JPEGs and got some MiniDV footage of some cool pinball tables and arcade game cabinet/game footage as well.
Backbone Entertainment had a Space Invaders Extreme upright cabinet running said game on a cool widescreen LCD monitor setup. Beneath the cab's exterior, it was an XBox 360 running Backbone's SIE on XBLA. Quite an interesting setup indeed. It had the usual black colored Happ joysticks and push buttons for the controls -- seemed to have that slugglish lag time but that was negible anyways when playing it.
For the second year in a row, the first raffle number called out for the Grand Prize, that person didn't come forward to claim it and thus, another ticket was drawn...an Asian guy ending up winning it this time around. The Grand Prize was either a choice of a Stern 2008 Indiana Jones pinball machine or a Global VR Capcom Arcade Classics upright endowed with a beautiful big and bright Wells Gardner 27" RGB monitor setup. Stern donated the Indiana Jones pinball prize for this year's 2009 CAX show. ^_~
I did see Sega/RDI joint collaboration effort laserdisc arcade game known as Time Traveller from 1991...a blast from the past with it's innovative three-dimensional holographic display technology.
