RQ: Illvelo (Wii) scoring system and bonuses

Post by Hydeux »

Hi folks !
Just cleared the game (arcade mode, crappy score, around 800 millions) and I just LOVED it !!! So I was wondering a few things about the system, maybe someone here could help !

1.How do you score ??? I mean is there a kind of multiplier like in Radirgy or something one gotta know to score ?

2.What's the use of the keys you gain in the bonus stages ?

3.How can you reach the True Last Boss mentionned in the soundtrack ? (something to do with those keys ?)

4. What's the use of the Milestone logos (big yellow M) you collect alla along the game ?

Thanx for your (numerous, accurate and very kind ! ) answers !

Can't answer your questions, have never played the game. But there is a superplay on nicovideo where the guy gets 9 billion (I think it's the world record), maybe it'll help.

Thanx Toby for the vids !
So, I’ll try and explain what I’ve learnt so far :
(as this is the first Milestone game I play, I’m not really familiar with their systems and habits, that’s why I let here a few questions, if anyone could help...)

First of all, the game is GREAT, you got to know this ! Toby said it looks insane, and indeed it is : many things to do, loads of bullets, colors end explosions everywhere, thank God (and Big N sissy hardware...) there are slowdowns so at least once in a while you can see where you are !

Weapons : you got three weapons from the beginning, they get stronger the more you use them (as using them makes you gain experience for each of them). You may change the type of shots by collecting a big round 1 (normal shots, best one IMO), 2 (laser), or 3 (bubbles)

1.V-SHOT : (with the “dolls” stuck to your ship) 1st meter on the left, gets wider and stronger. Quite efficient against small fry an destructible shots, and of course much better at point blank against big ennemies.

2. “what I’d call Force shot” : (with your dolls far from your ship) send your dolls away, in any direction you want AND shoot, it fills your second meter. Really efficient, even at a low level, really necessary in bonus stages (you won’t even finish the 1st one without this weapon). Great against big ennemies as you can place your dolls on them and stay away to avoid bullets... Note that you can move along with your dolls by keeping B button pressed.

3. Shield : From what I know it’s the “Milestone classic” shield, it appears when you don’t shoot at all, fills your third meter and the more bullets it absorbs the stronger it gets to eventually sends bullets back (from level 40). Note that, if you don’t shoot and have your dolls away, they’re considered as shield as well, so the best shield you can have is : sending your dolls away, getting right behind them (or them in front of you) and stop shooting.

The bomb : You’ll use it much more as a defensive weapon ‘cause it’s not really powerful (but it DOES some damage.) It will create a flaming disc around you and inside it, you’re invincible. As it still allows you to use your other weapons, use it as much as possible : you’ll improve your weapons’ levels AND you won’t be injured... The bomb fills up very quickly as you destroy things and it doesn’t improve like the other weapons.

Bonus stages : All along stages you’ll come across bonus stages items (which look like... huh... well, kind of electronic alarm on stuff in your supermarket... told you : crazy game...), when you touch these items you’re teleported into a bonus stage (they’re lots of them). When you finish the bonus stage, which means destroying everything most of the time, you’re awarded a key and then you go back to the normal stage.
Do NOT miss bonus stages : you get more score (‘cause some of them are just insane, packed with tons of ennemies) and the keys open the doors to...

The True Last Boss : obviously (not sure...) if you collect 50 keys, you can have access to the TLB, after defeating the stage 5 boss.

Well, this is where I am... not much as you can see, and I still have a few questions to answer :

- What’s the use of the many Milestone logos (big yellow M’s) you collect all along the game ?

- Do you really need 50 keys to access the TLB ?

- (This is probably the most important question !!!!) What’s exactly the core of the scoring system ? Obviously, you need to improve your three weapons to reach billions (WR is around 6 billions ! my best run is around 2 billions, but I don’t use shield...), but I can't figure a clear way to put it... (Has Karous such a score system ? it may help to know...)

- How come such a crazy game makes so little buzz ? (whereas “average” game like Gradius R or Otomedius G makes too much buzz IMO !!!!!!!)

Any help appriciated, Thanx !!!

I've never even heard of this, a brand new Milestone game?! For the Wii?! I follow shmup releases and new Wii releases of interest, and it's tough to believe such a game could get right past me. I need to look for this! I too am curious about why no one has talked about this before. When was it released?

I'd like to think that the scoring system is a multiplier-based format kinda like Karous (MULTI=shot+doll+shield), but is it rather a different system of MULTI=shot(+ or *)doll*shield?

I focused on shield a few games back as opposed to shooting everything with the dolls, and the score was a good 10 million higher (29.5 mil vs. 15.7 mil @ stage 2 Boss)...so yeah I'd like to know this too.

[(shot+dolls)*shield] seems to be a good idea.
No time this week, I'll get back to it in a few days.

Been months since I played this game !
As Radilgy Noir is to be released these days, I got into a "Milestone Nostalgia" and played Illvelo again : scoring system is still far from what I can understand...

Anyone has clues ?

The keys are the multiplier... if I'm not mistaken, they are x1 per key you have, so obviously you need to get a lot. I've not watched stage 5 of the video, but I did get the "second" boss out (the one other than the big head) but can never kill the fucker. My max is 48 (?) keys... I"ve definitely never had 50 but I've had him appear.

You mean that you only need to collect keys to improve score ? The more keys the more multiplier ? (had never thought that !) No use to level-up weapons ?
I'll give it a try this week-end.

A little late here.
Yes, the keys are the multiplier... the weapons you level up to do more damage!

justgot this for Naomi and am trying to figure out what all the icons mean.

Which one increases your speed? The exclamation points or the "mail" icons?

I'm loving it, but MY GOD is it chaotic!

what triggers the 1up's? I seem to randomly acquire these throughout levels, unrelated to the score-extend. They're obviously a HUGE help....I just want to know if there is any way to consistently trigger them?

Go to as many bonus stages as you can, in order to collect as many keys as possible. (It's necessary to know them by heart 'cause they're really short.)
Those keys are multipliers for your score, as GaijinPunch said : you got 5 keys, score is multiplied by 5 and so on.
If you manage to collect 50 keys or more, you'll access the True Last Boss.

Note that if you're playing the easier Illvello Still (on the Radirgy Noa Wii disc), you won't be able to collect 50 keys. (or at least : I never manage to collect 50...)
