School me on MAME and high scores

I have a newish Mame build, so highscore.dat doesn't work. I have it set up to autosave on exit, but none of my high scores will save. What am I doing wrong?

try MameFX (or some other version that supports high scores) and get a recent highscores.dat

well, you know some newer pcbs save scores even if you power down (this is emulated in mame).

That feature allows for this behavior for almost every game.

It's kinda nice to track your progress.

It's 129u2 with hi score support. I think the hiscore.dat file is in there too. And if there isn't already a folder named "hi" make sure to add it.

Which makes 0.99 the best version. I´m going to switch back from Mac to PC soon, the MAME versions for Mac are pretty lame (they either are newer builds meaning no highscore saving or savestates or they are PPC based, meaning they run like crap on Intel machines). I don´t even have autofire
