Naxat Summer Carnival Games Appreciate Thread

Post by szycag »

Starting this thread off with a poll. Pretty likely Recca will come out on top, but we'll see. Do try to play the ones you haven't before making a final choice, if you can.

Drboom is hosting a Winter Carnival at the end of the month in Chicago, with Recca and Alzadick competitions. This got me excited since I love score attack games, and I tried Alzadick for the first time in Magic Engine a few days ago. Not a whole lot of strategy info on the net about that title compared to Recca; some of the scoring bonuses are still hiding from me I bet.

Is Recca clearly the best of the lot? It's certainly the most technically impressive with all the timing and sprite tricks used. But Nexzr and Alzadick both seem like very cool takes on Hudson's Soldier series. Spriggan leans more towards Compile's style (they were involved after all) and I didn't get into it much.

Recca is certainly amazing, but not the most fun to actually play... that goes to Spriggan, because it's essentially Aleste, part 2 on the PCE (the first being Gunhed, of course.)

Nexzr is a very close second.

Yyeww, Spriggan. I find that the most boring of the bunch. Suffers so heavily from Compileitus.

I've played Recca the most by far so my vote goes for that. As far as Score Attack modes go, anyway. I think Nexzr's normal mode might be better than Recca's though, even if it is heavily dependant on memorizing. I did manage to clear Nexzr when I was playing it actively.

But man, the hours I spent doing Recca's Score Attack...good times.

i used to love recca but after i got a superplay for it i kinda lost interest.. its just too broken :?

i guess its still kinda fun to throw on occationally just to marvel at what an incredible feat it is to push the FC to such an extent, there really is nothing like it for the console.

Are these decent enough on MAME? Having never owned any of them, thanks to their rarity, I've never played any, so I'm in no position to vote. But being a big fan of score attack and caravan modes I'm gagging to try them at some point...

These weren't arcade games, Recca is for Famicom, all the others are PC Engine.

Sorry! I knew they weren’t arcade releases. I meant ‘emulation’; not MAME. I’m simply a bloody idiot.

PC Engine emulation is pretty good, but you need to find the CD ISOs somewhere on net and while I use MAME myself and have roms for other systems as well (e.g. Famicom Recca) I always considered downloading CD ISOs a different level of piracy....

I was playing Recca on my Astro City yesterday :D
I've still never gotten around to trying out the others though, so no vote.

PCE emulation isn't hard, but it does have a few more steps than "drop ROMs in MAME." If you're serious about trying these games, I wouldn't mind PMing you all the details.

I fart on recca
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I guess I'm not too suprised that Alzadick is comming out in last, but it's still a fantastic game. It plays butter smooth and the reward enemies you get for killing regular enemies very fast (the series of triangles) are a pretty cool idea. That alone certainly makes you play very aggressive and forces you to use the shot angles to take out series of enemies, so the strategy is kind of a step up from traditional Soldier titles.
But Recca has to be my favorite. It's crazy and fun at the same time.

There's a superplay VHS of Recca and its different modes (including Zanki) out there. I own one and I've transferred the contents to digital form to preserve it.

Yup. :D I'd love to see where you are getting that extra ~30K in points.

I found a 536465 point Score Attack video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3TU4gbpMxw . That should be good enough reference for us mortals, I think. It's too bad he doesn't have a Time Attack vid, though.
