go to the marketplace on xbox.com, queue the demo from there. it always appears on there quite a few hours before the live marketplace for some reason. here's the link for r type: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-GB/games ... ?cid=SLink

I found it on the marketplace now and just gave it a try. The 2d/3d switch function is quite funny, heh.supagorgonizer wrote:go to the marketplace on xbox.com, queue the demo from there. it always appears on there quite a few hours before the live marketplace for some reason. here's the link for r type: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-GB/games ... ?cid=SLink
Still think this one should not cost more than 800 points though, there are a lot of good arcade games which cost less than this one.
for fuck's sake, why can't you change the button layout? ugggghhh
I was on the fence about buying this at 1200 points but am definitely not going to bother if they can't even take the time to at least give the option of manually setting what each button does, let alone offer alternate pre-made choices for button configurations (note to game developers - putting a "Controls" section in the Options and then just having that section be nothing more than a diagram of the pad layout, does not fall under the category of OPTIONS!)

just had a quick go, posting a truly miserable 225,300 in classic mode :/
Anyways, the biggest complaint i had with the TGS version has been somewhat addressed : the 3d graphics look was a bit too clean.
However, pressing select in game gives the ability to apply a limited set of filters to the 3d and it makes it a lot more pleasing to look at (at least to me anyways).
There is a fairly amusing "arcade" setting for the 2d mode which renders the emulation onto a model of an RType arcade machine. Pointless, but at least fun.
the standard 2d mode (widescreen and original available) both look good, nice and sharp. The "crazy" 3d cam is interesting, but not that well suited to a game like Rtype.
The infinite mode basically gives you infinite respawns from where you last died. no stopping and reloading from the last checkpoint, just reappear with the basic Force. Okay, it's nice that everyone can now finish the game, but an infinite lives with classic death might have worked a bit better (albeit it would still be hard!) . I actually did much worse in this mode than in classic on 3 lives. Coop looks like it could be fun and i'll be interested to see how it plays out.
Not sure about one of the achievements : Complete level 1 of RT1/2 using only the beam. One slight issue is that you ALWAYS fire a shot when charging the beam. Not sure whether it simply means "Don't pick up any non standard weapons" but with the horrid omission of configurable controls, this might not be possible to do.
Other quibbles, and i'd need to have the boards i already sold here to compare, is that there seems to be some weird collission errors in the players favour. I didn't notice it until level 4 but, despite having The Force at the front, no option, and no missiles, enemies that hit me from slightly above were killed.
Anyways, i quite like it!

I see that. I checked on Gamefaqs and it said that it was released in the US, and nowhere else.
I checked out the demo. The controls feel a bit weird.. I can't quite explain it, but they don't feel totally smooth. The ability to change from 2D to 3D while playing is a neat (although distracting) feature to the game. The different available angles are fairly irrelevant, including the arcade one which is just awful. I'm tempted to purchase it, but I'll probably wait until the SFIV pads are released. I'm tired of playing with the 360's dpad.

Not being able to change the layout is pretty lame. The arcade view is pointless. You play the game from an arcade cab(and from a distance). I put the game on its original graphics. The game play at first felt sluggish, but now it is fine. If anything it seems like enemy patterns are a tad different for some enemies. But, that could just be since i havent played it in a few months.
Overall, its fine to me. I'll try the remade graphics. I pulled a shitty 294k score. Need to push some japanese players down (:
3d looks pretty ok. Feels like im playing super rtype.

Ok, I got the Beam Me Up! achievement. It seems that you are allowed to fire a shot to fire up the beam because I accidentally fired off a couple normal shots in order to start the charge up of the beam. But most of the time I was able to start charging without firing. None of those stray shots hit any enemies though. I also only collected the first pod power up and skipped the missile power up. The achievement popped right after the boss died. I was playing R-Type I.
"I've always wanted a thing called Tuna Sasimi!"
most definitely! Just played through R-Type (infinite only) with the Retro 2.0 filter. Looks amazingly good. However, pressing select in game gives the ability to apply a limited set of filters to the 3d and it makes it a lot more pleasing to look at (at least to me anyways).
Retro sets the resolution to 320x240 whereas Retro 2.0 sets it to 640x480. Looks like a flawless progressive DC game this way. Very nice.
The scrolling all through the game remains a bit choppy as they don't seem to have invested much effort into converting the 5x Hz from the original into the 60Hz output the game now has.
A question the difficulty: I assume this is the standard arcade difficulty ? I've only played R-Type on the PC Engine I always remembered the 3rd boss (the large ship) to dye from a SINGLE beam shot, whereas I needed at least 10 to kill it in Dimensions.....

nah the ship always took 4 or 5 beamshots.
also you dont have to be in the game to change the filters. Probably would actually save too if you just do it in the title screen.
one and a half in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVNHNJoWAe0nah the ship always took 4 or 5 beamshots.
And I'm pretty sure that 1 was enough if it's 100% loaded and exactly hit in the open eye.

At just 600 MSP per game, yes, I'd say it's worth it. There's plenty of extras here to warrant the cost IMO (leaderboards, online co-op, achievements, tastefully updated graphics, etc.). Show your support for these smaller projects so that more get made in the future.

You're getting rtype 1 and 2 for 1200. I thought it would be awesome to have r-type, but after playing it until I 1cc'd it in Mame. THe lasting appeal for the first one is a bit low. Coop was a lot of fun, albeit lagged as hell. Atleast i have the 2nd one to look forward to. Bottom line: if you're a fan of rtype or like the genre, you should get it. You should try the demo regardless though.
