Saturn pinball game recommendations?

Post by JL »

I heard that Necronomicon is the best pinball game available for saturn. But I also heard that the game is based on 'evil themes'. I do not like games with strong evil elements. Can someone describe the dark side of the game? Are they seriously evil?

So far I've seen titles like Last Gladiator, True pinball, Hyper pinball, Tilt! and so on. Which pinball games would you recommend other than Necronomicon?

Bow to Satan bitch  :P It's not that evil. You can just play the game and mute the sound if you like.

A lot of it is just FMV. You see a black guy in some robe walking around to a dark castle then going to it to meditate in a circle of candles (I think). It's nothing too bad. As a pinball game, it's OK.

I never really have liked many pinball games on consoles, just doesn't have the feel like at the arcade (Medieval Madness, anyone?).

Necronomicon and Last Gladiators are the two essential pinball games for the Saturn. Even to this day, they are some of the best pinball games ever made (holding up well against the Pro Pinball series). As for 'evil' elements.. well, whatever, it's basically butt rock mixed with some HP Lovecraft elements. Last Gladiators is extremely similar, just a little less refined and crazy.. also without the 'evil' elements.

True Pinball is a good one too (made by Digital Illusions. This is the last of the famed Pinball Dreams series), but I think it was only released in PAL territories, so if you play it on an NTSC TV, you won't see the flippers on the bottom.

Fantastic Pinball is also supposedly pretty good.

I've wanted to try Necronomicon for a long time, but I've never been able to find it for sale... :?

I'll second Necronomicon and Last Gladiators. They are the best on the Saturn - and still incredibly fun to play. You can't go wrong with these... and they should be fairly cheap.

I'll add that I didn't find the theme highly offensive... it was more like halloween haunted-house type atmosphere... maybe a bit worse but then again I'm not overly sensitive to it.

Last Galdiators is from the same company and is quite good too and it's theme may be more palatable to you.

I've only played Necronomicon and Last Gladiators as far as Saturn pinball games go, but they are both excellent. I can't quite put my finger on what puts Necronomicon above Last Gladiators, maybe it's a better realized theme, maybe it's some intangible of table design. They're both great, and Last Gladiators is easier to find, it might be good to try that out first.

Unless you're the kind of person who is offended by Harry Potter for peddling witchcraft to children, it's unlikely you'll be bothered by Necronomicon. It's got some occult elements, allusions to the Cthulhu mythos and a few pentagrams.

Has anyone played Akira Psychoball? It's by Kaze, the makers of Necronomicon and Last Gladiators, I don't know much about it, except an article in EGM I read a few years ago. It looks pretty cool. I think Kaze also did a Power Rangers pinball game too.

I've heard that Fantastic Pinball has some physics issue, but I'm definitely planning on checking it out. Dragon's Fury on the Genesis is fucking great. I know it's just a port, but TechnoSoft did a great job, the omake background music is a great touch.

PS - How could Cthulhu not have played Necronomicon? He's brought shame to his screenname.

Akira Psycho Ball is good. Actually, I think it's awesome. Completing one stage causes the table to break in half and either a new upper or lower half is added. There are special stages like the sewers and the lab etc. It's not the best ever but is very fun if a little on the simple side. Easily worth whatever you think is a decent price.

The be all end all pinball games is Flipnic. I can't even really describe the scope of this game. The developers have taken the pinballin' concept and just run far far away with it. It would be impossible to have a reall ife pinball machine that is this crazy. It'd take up whole city blocks

And everyone else is correct. The bestest pinballers on Saturn are Last Gladiators and Necronomicon. If you find Necronomicon somehow offensive you'd best get ready for a long life of being offended. I've seen episodes of Magnum PI that were more evil than Necronomicon pinball.

Necronomicon and Last Gladiators!!
Neither are "Satanic" either! C'mon man, get real! Its a friggen chrome ball bouncing around, thats all... nothing more.
PS: I hope you like Heavy Metal music, with very good guitar playing...because thats what you'll get with both.

Very good in my opinion!!

Fantastic Pinball is kinda lame. I don't care if they're the same people who made the Thunder Force series.

Yes, very... very ghey!!! A black man in a robe and candles...even a milk snake for extra measure! OMG! and a skull!!!
They try to depict a "Pagan", but yet feature an African that looks like he just stepped out of the shower.
Forget the intro! The game and music RULE!

I guess Saturn piunball games would definitely be the best way to play pinball at home but I really prefer the real deal.

Dedicated to one pinball game, eh? Can't say I blame you, but I'd love to have a Twilight Zone, Attack From Mars, or a Space Shuttle.

If I ever get a real pinball machine (god willing), it'll be the Adams Family machine. I used to play it all the time at a restaraunt we used to go to all the time. I would beg for quarters before my turkey sandwich arrived, so I could play The Adams Family Pinball and Sunset Riders.

Someday, I'll return to Ithaca, and I'm going back to that place to make sure it's the same.

Someone described Necronomicon with words like 'gateway to hell' and 'you have to expect everything that sounds like hell or from hell'. Maybe I was over worried then.

I always wanted a T2 or Tommy pin. I had this great desire to pick up a real pin last year and found a Batman Foreverfor a good deal (<$2K). It's also a "super pin" which means it has a wider body and larger display than standard pins. Save your pennies. I really think a pinball machine is a good investment.

Kickin' Dream Theater soundtrack though.

There's a pinball shop not far from my house but I've never been there. I might go this weekend.

I always wanted a Super Mario World machine. I used to love the remixed soundtrack and would love to hear it again.

Revenge From Mars
Dude, Attack from Mars is ten times the pin Revenge is.
Kickin' Dream Theater soundtrack though.
Actually, I believe only the song that plays during the intro FMV is a Dream Theater track.

To all those concerned...Dream Theatre has nothing to do with the soundtracks.
Only John Petrucci (Dream Theatre guitarist) plays during the intro to Necro.

The other music is great, but its not Dream Theatre.
Actually, the rest of the music is more "Lords of Thunder" style with keyboards.

How do these stand up to the new pinball hall of fame pack?

If you're talking about LG and Necronomicon, they destroy it. Ball physics are way better, and the tables are much more fun too. Of course if you prefer older-style tables you might not feel that way. PHoF has a more realistic tilt mechanism, but that's about it's only advantage.

That would be Pro Pinball... the tables are also available seperately on PC and PSX. Now that's a great pinball game.. in fact, IMO it's the only video pinball that can top LG/Necronomicon. Truly well designed and fun tables with great physics and cool video modes.

LG is fairly realistic; in the intro it actually shows how they built a real table from one of the designs in the game. Necronomicon is pretty realistic too, but some of the toys are impossible and the ramps would stick out two feet to either side of the table.
