Need help w/ a comprehensive list of 2D platformers for PSX
Need help w/ a comprehensive list of 2D platformers for PSX
I am writing an article about PSX 2D platformers for Racketboy's site similar to BulletMagnet's PSX and Saturn shmups articles. ( http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2009/01/ ... brary.html )
Right now I am just in the planning/information gathering stage, so I need help filling out my list of games. I can't help but feeling like there are some obscure Japanese games missing from my list. I think I am also still lacking a lot of the ports/compilations. So please contribute if you know of anything that is not on this list!
In defining 2D platformer, I am referring to games with a 2D or 2.5D side scrolling perspective (It can have polygons as long as the gameplay is along a 2d axis). The game does not necessarily have to focus on platform jumping, but it must include jumping of some sort. Therefore, games like Metal Slug and Castlevania SOTN will count for purposes of this list.
Thanks for your help!

If more 2D people would go to the 2D Gaming Forum, there would be more people to talk about 2D games with other 2D fans on the tootie gaming forum. It's 2Dlicious. For real yall

Re: Need help w/ a comprehensive list of 2D platformers for
GP describes it as a "cross between Tetris and Lemmings," so I don't think it'd fit in this list, but someone who's actually played it would have to confirm.indstr wrote:Zoku Gussun Oyoyo - ??? Don't know a lot about this one, can anyone confirm?

I know it's comprehensive but I'd just like to say:

I know, I can't find any actual screenshots... Suppose it shouldn't be on the list thoughBulletMagnet wrote:GP describes it as a "cross between Tetris and Lemmings," so I don't think it'd fit in this list, but someone who's actually played it would have to confirm.indstr wrote:Zoku Gussun Oyoyo - ??? Agreed about that game...Skykid wrote:I know it's comprehensive but I'd just like to say:

Awesome! Thanks a huge amount dude! The game looks decent, and it's Konami so I don't see how it could be bad.BulletMagnet wrote:Ah, before I forget - IIRC there's a game called "Cyborg Kuro-Chan" on the system which plays something like Metal Slug. I haven't tried it myself, but I don't think I saw it on your list.

I think Gear Senshi Dendoh qualifies although it's half platform, half really shitty 3D fighting. There's also Umihara Kawase Shun Second Edition, as well as the first Metal Slug.

Re: Need help w/ a comprehensive list of 2D platformers for
The Sunsoft Memorial Collection has Atlantis no Nazo on Vol.2, The Wing of Madoola and Kanshakudama Nage Kantarou on Vol.3, Journey to Silius (Raf world) and Hebereke in Vol.5, and Mr. Gimmick on Vol.6.indstr wrote: I think I am also still lacking a lot of the ports/compilations.
Namco Museum Vol.4 has Pac-Land, and The Genji and The Heike Clans, and N.M. Encore has Rolling Thunder.
There might be a couple more in the Namco series, but I didn't double check them all.
Capcom Generations (and Retro Books Collection) Vol.2 has the Ghouls & Ghosts games.
The "Arcade Gears" series has Midnight Wanderers (Roosters) on the Wonder 3 collection.
And Jaleco Collection Vol.1 has Ninja Jajamaru-Kun, while Formation Z, Rod Land, and City Connection might be borderliners.
"Kid Klown in Crazy Chase 2: Love Love Honey" is basically 2.5D but may be borderline since you can move left and right across the isometric plane, as well as forward and backward (and jump).
just fyi, Capcom did "book" collections, of Strider, and Rockmans 1 and 2 (separately)
Good luck with the article, BulletMagnet set a high standard!
PS, if you're going to include 2.5D like Pandemonium, do you think you can give Rescue Shot a mention?
Did you mean to post a URL to an article about Obama's love life???GaijinPunch wrote:I think Gear Senshi Dendoh qualifies although it's half platform, half really shitty 3D fighting. There's also Umihara Kawase Shun Second Edition, as well as the first Metal Slug.

Anyway, I watched a video of that..... I'm seriously on the fence about adding this to the list. I pretty much view it the same as that Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub zero .... Even though you walk around some, the focus is so much on fighting I have trouble considering it a platformer.
I looked up Rescue Shot. It's a lightgun game ... ?? I can't find any videos of it, only screenshots & a description. But I don't see how this could be considered a platformer. Does shooting make you jump or something? Please explain!Koa Zo wrote: *A bunch of helpful port information*

See above about the reason I didn't put this on the list... The focus is too much on fightingJonathan Ingram wrote:Mortal Kombat: Mythologies Sub-Zero
What the hell! Why haven't I ever heard of this rather awesome looking what appears to be metal slug clone??? Never heard of it for PSX or GBA ! Man... GBA ports on PSX. That's a rare one right there. Getting kind of excited now thoughJonathan Ingram wrote: CT: Special Forces(GBA port)

Duly noted. I certainly will mention this in the article. Thanks for the tip.Turrican wrote:Manfred Trenz worked on the first CT Special Forces for PSX. - you should mentions this. I think it's the only Trenz contribution to PSX library.

ah, I was drunk and tired - I really have no idea what business I have even trying to relate it to Pandemonium ...something made me think of those two together though..indstr wrote: I looked up Rescue Shot. anyhow, yeah, the character just walks a along a 2.5D environment at a constant pace, and with the light gun you basically escort the character by shooting stuff in the background and iirc shooting the character can make it jump or duck to avoid potential danger.
It was one of those games I bought for like $2 and never really played, but stuck in my mind anyway because it was so unique.
It may be worth a mention just to let others know of the concept.
