Extremely popular shmups you don't "get"

I don't want to piss the mods of this place off again as they seem to be pretty nice people, so I'm just gonna ignore that. Please don't talk to me again, thanks.Zebra Airforce wrote:Nazi comparisons = I'm a 14 year old going through puberty argument. Good to see that people can discuss different points without resorting to name calling, mostly at least.
So I guess you don't like Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Dodonpachi, Dodonpachi Daioujou, Samidare, etc?Arvandor wrote:Fuck rank.
Garegga's way out of my league. I just prefer nice, complicated bullet hell without worrying about destroying certain particles of an enemy ship in a rhythmic sequence while tapping shot 0.8 seconds apart after selecting a ship by pressing A B and C at the same time.
How about you try making a better "monkey see, monkey do" analogy without declaring how much you're a racist? Toodles.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote:Good to see that people can discuss different points without resorting to name calling, mostly at least.

As KG mentioned, have you tried the Special version? It's a ways easier than the regular one, at least just for getting through the initial loop.Jockel wrote:I feel totally raped when playing Batsugun*

Yeah it was so much better when I didn't know such a thing existed. I managed to 1cc several games with rank and I never even suspected anything was different even if I went past same boss with no miss or no lives left :/. Now I'm more mentally prepared to die when I get to a boss with high rank, I guess it's bit of stupid when I should actually just be focusing on going past the boss than worrying about rank making the boss too hard.Arvandor wrote:Fuck rank.
wait. wait... wait...... Samidare has rank?Elixir wrote:So I guess you don't like Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Dodonpachi, Dodonpachi Daioujou, Samidare, etc?

Probably related to the speed of the bullets more than anything else? I didn't notice it then, I just religiously tried to survive across the wtfbbqtastic barrages.LtC wrote:Yeah it was so much better when I didn't know such a thing existed. By the way, RebRank released a story/manual preview thing about Samidare.
I don't mind rank though.
Actually, the only schmukmup I can never get after clearing it a couple of times and even recording each chapter is Protöthea for PC =P (avoid the Wii version like the plague)
Keyboard+mouse+inertia+your-ship-is-your-hitbox+life bar+enemies attacking from all directions+ground targets ala Xevious+bullet time mode.

I also have to admit that I don't really enjoy Garegga all that much. It's certainly quite fun when everything is going well, but as soon as you screw something (read: anything) up, it's a royal pain to start over (medal chain, etc.) while the rank raises exponentially. That being said, I do enjoy Batrider's normal mode (Haven't played Bakraid yet.) Also, I harbor much hate for Raycrisis and its unkillable bosses (Seriously, they take way too many hits to kill), U.N Squadron (To think I actually listned to what the Screwattack guys had to say. For shame!) and Axelay's vertical scrolling stages. Also, I'm not such a big fan of Gradius Gaiden. Maybe it's simply because I suck at it, but Gradius Syndrome is just too big a turn-off for me to play it more often.
Animal Collective and Big Black. Make of that what you will.

I like pretty much every game that's been mentioned on here, and I like them all quite a bit except for one:
Mushihimesama. It's not that I *dislike* it, but it just seems like it's so wildly popular among both Can nuts and non-fans alike and it's actually my least favorite in their catalogue. I dunno.

Twin Hawk. It's fun and probably deserves a lot of the hype it gets, but it seems a bit... slow paced, especially compared to other Toaplan shooters like Truxton or Fire Shark. I don't know if it's a sequel to Fighting Hawk or not (seems like it), but I preferred that game's pacing a little better. At the very least, it's my least favorite of Toaplan shooters, and I've enjoyed everyone of those I've played.

Maybe I should have put a qualifier on it for the slow of thought. Fuck rank that forces you to suicide to clear the game. I don't even mind rank if it's tied in with the scoring so much, but if it's impossible to beat the game without dying, then something is seriously wrong. But DoDonPachi has it.
And don't give me that BS about low score low powerup one-life runs. The hoops you have to jump through (mostly NOT shooting things) is even worse than suiciding to survive. I'm there to blow stuff up, and I'll be damned if stuff isn't going to be blowing up (preferably NOT me).
Not to say that Garegga's system isn't geniously strategic and masterfully executed (outside of the close tie in to late-game survival), it's just that it's very counter-intuitive and frustrating. It's simply not fun. I don't enjoy running my precious lives into things to keep the game playable at stage 6 and beyond. I find it to be just plain retarded.

Oh yeah, that's one more: Samidare. I really don't like the design of the game, the patterns are bleh, and the playstyle feels boring. It's not really all that popular, but I thought I'd mention it. I feel that's one of the best examples of how NOT to design a shmup based around shielding.

Mushihimesama is my least favourite Cave shooter, too (I like Futari a lot, but never got on with the original, and ended up selling it recently).Sonic R wrote:Even Ibara?zero.otaku wrote:I like pretty much every game that's been mentioned on here, and I like them all quite a bit except for one:

Ibara is one of my favourites. I guess Ibara is a bit like Marmite (UK reference, sorry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite) in that most people seem to either love it or hate it.
im too stupid to play mushihimesama maniac/ultra.. i just cant get the hang of how the scoring system works, ive read a thousand guides and played it to death but it just wont work for me
nice game otherwise tho.
two other games i dont get are dangun feveron (a BAD game plain and simple) and ESPgaluda 2 (excellent game but scoresystem sucks)..

the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
It's not a focal point, sure, but the difference in bullet density can go almost twofold from lowest rank to highest. I mean it. I can't help but think about it when I realize it's becoming way too dangerous to try going through bullet streams on stage 5, and bombing galore it boecomes.captpain wrote:I don't know if you're agreeing or what, but I can tell you it's not something you ever have to think about or deal with, and is in no way a focal point of the game.

I like the series and all... own a few. but when the time comes to be really honest..... I don't see much of anything memorable other than fish, odd/memorable music and the branching. The Darius series.
The gameplay is about as basic as they come....
Like I said I own 2 and gaiden and want to pic up G, but I don't see what all the fuss is really other than a classic game that deserves to be noted on a timeline.
Trigger Heart and Trizeal on the other hand..... they are complete garbage to me and don't see why anyone loves them. it blows my mind that folks are shelling out so much cash of the THE port on PS2, especially considering you don't even get 480p like the DC port.... I could care less about voice crap ect added to it.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Though I agree about the Darius games for the msot part, G is a lot different than the others in the series.Strider77 wrote: Like I said I own 2 and gaiden and want to pic up G, but I don't see what all the fuss is really other than a classic game that deserves to be noted on a timeline.
Feedback will set you free.

Yeah I agree... although I've only played the PS2 version. It just doesn't click.zero.otaku wrote:I like pretty much every game that's been mentioned on here, and I like them all quite a bit except for one:

No, I'm not simple minded or a sloppy thinker. Anyone who comes up with a racial analogy over a normal one is inadvertently being publicly racist for everyone else to see. Maybe you don't even know it yet. I've dealt with one whose "yet to come out". What, couldn't come up with a normal one? I know what you were trying to do, but it was poorly worded. If anything, you're the sloppy thinker for not being capable of proving a point without directing people's train of thought onto more pressing matters. Good job, it worked.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote:Is this worth talking about?Elixir wrote:How about you try making a better "monkey see, monkey do" analogy without declaring how much you're a racist? Those of your posts I have read so far make me believe it's the former...
