NES Military Games(Action)!

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

I just got back from playing some really classic NES military themed games. The thing I really like about these games is that at the time there was really no such thing is being too imaginative with a military theme. You could have nonexistent weapons and super soldiers. The landscapes were not always brown and gray and things had some color.

These games are still very fun. I just cannot get enough of Jackal, a top down vehicle shooter would never really work these days. I think the 8 way directional movement in many of these games is actually MUCH more responsive and fast than the analog arena shooters of today.

These are the games that I have REALLY been liking. I also like how when you die it sounds like a muffled farting noise.

Contra
Super C
Jackal (what happened to the vehicle combat theme games?)
Rush N' Attack
Ikari Warriors
Heavy Barrel

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

I agree about analog aiming. Having clearly differentiated diagonals affects different games in different ways, but I find it hurts a number of titles.

Although the top-down action in Super Contra / Super C is pretty lame, those are some good choices.

Add in Guerrilla War (another SNK shooter). Looks better on the NES actually. Time Soldiers too, arcade / SMS / maybe something else.

Sega put out some games of that type too, like Bullet (I kinda like that one), Desert War (I believe), and stuff I don't recall being wowed by (Crack Down).

I think the GI Joe games (Taxan / Capcom right?) count as well.

Just as good in arcades, plus it has a follow-up there (in the form of Blood Bros.)

Cross Fire is kinda like a more Rambo themed Contra, it's also really fucking hard too.

We even talk about those kinds of games there.

Games like this tend to be even better with a second player, two player action mowing down enemy soldiers is always a blast, shame no one in my area except me seems to own an NES and at least some of the games Pixel listed. Have tons of fun with Super C but would really love to get my hands on Guerrilla War, one of the first games I beat due to unlimited continues, the game seems easy because of this feature, but man oh man is the pace quick.

The Assault Heroes series on XBLA reminds me of Jackal.

I thought this thread was going to be about games more along the lines of North vs South.

Were there any other strategy military games for NES/FC, besides Famicom Wars?

Jackal is so much better on the NES, too. The arcade version has arcade Contra / Super Contra's aiming lag, and in a 100% overhead game it's horrible. It makes running over an infantry man, shoving a rocket up a tank's ass (killing another with the shrapnel) and grabbing a hostage in the same u-turn impossible, and the second needed for the aiming to catch up can get you killed.

I do like the continuous map of the arcade version though. I just can't get past the lag.

Would Metal Gear (MSX version is considered better, I believe) and Snake's Revenge count? I still love the idea of a "military action RPG."

Have you checked out Desert Commander for the NES?

It plays more or less in a style of Nectaris/Military Madness.

Another one in a more stratgic realm, Conflict, also on the NES.

Wow, Desert Commander reminds me of Advance Wars, from the screens!

I would also recommend Ikari Warriors 3; it's a military shooter that's got some good beat 'em up action in it. P.O.W. is in the same vein. I never liked the second one. Iron Tank is definitely a must, I'm glad it was mentioned.

Koei has plenty of historical military simulation games out there. Romance of the 3 Kingdoms, Nobunaga's Ambition, Bandit Kings of Ancient China/Suikoden, L'Empereur, and Genghis Khan. Namco also put out two 3 Kingdoms games.

Oh, there's Mechanized Attack too, another SNK title. Can't remember if it was any good, compared to the AC version or not. Box art is rad though.

I just can't get enough of these. Maybe because I never had any soldier/army toys as a kid. I'd imagine that these games play much like a video version of toy soldiers.

I wasn't trying to be an ass earlier I just want to maintain this thread for action based army games.

Not to derail the thread but...

Desert Commander is cool - not as many scenarios as I would like, but solid none the less.

Overlord is a fun strategy game too, although much more sci-fi, and ploddingly paced.

Nobody said Platoon yet (by teh Sunsoft). Anybody remember that piece of garbage? There's a bridge or something in the first 10 seconds of scrolling left that everybody ends up getting stuck at.

I have a thread from a while back:

I know this was an NES thread but I thought I'd mention Bloody Wolf for TG16 which I thought was pretty decent and for strategy buffs joo cannot beat Military Madness (TG16/PS1) or Herzog Zwei (Genesis/Megadrive).

Back to thread. 8)

It's awesome, and you can play it fine without the NES Zapper. A great military themed rail-shooter for your library!

I would add in Battletank for the NES, and, if you have an SNES, Super Battle Tank and Super Battle Tank 2. All three are great military action games. Mig-29 for the NES is great as well; it's one part Afterburner and one part vertical shmup, and it's a lot of fun.

Cross Fire is great, and along those lines, I would also recommend Red Zone, also for the Genesis, and Fire Hawk for the NES.

Guevara is the king of the thread, which may be closed after mentioning it.

But if you take stealth as a form of action (and after all why not, you still punch enemies to death) then have a look at both Metal Gears.

Or maybe it will just be censored and replaced with Guerrilla War. ;)
