So tell me about Thunderforce V (PSX)

Post by jpolz »

Cuz I just bought it off ebay. Got it for $13 shipped and is (supposedly) immaculate condition.

Is it just a good game, or a great game?

And you got a great deal on very good PSX shmup. :) Be happy! Go play it!

Saturn version is still superior, IMO.

Very nice game, and a good challenge. Nice price too.

Haven't played the Saturn version, but I think Working Designs did a good job with the port. It's a fun one, and if you're accustomed to the Thunderforce series it should be...interesting, to say the least.

The Saturn version is superior but, frankly, it's not really a big difference between both versions.

The PSX version is pretty good too.. and it has no slowdowns, unlike the saturn one.

I find TF5 to be an amazing game. It's among my favourite top 10.

I'm not a huge fan of the game myself, but for less than 15 bucks including shipping you shouldn't be disappointed (though I pride myself on getting the Saturn version for 5 bucks, and the PS version for one dollar ).

$13 wow thats cheap in uk tf5 goes for over $70 for the sega saturn looks like I ain't going to waste money on that.

Anyone got any links to a playstation replay of tf5, I've seen the saturn ones but I'd like to see the extra cut scenes and that other level if it got an extra level that is.

Here is how I rate the series:
Thunder Force 3 9/10
Thunder Force 4 10/10
Thunder Force 5 8/10

The problem I have with Thunder Force 5 is that the music just isn't as good as 3 and 4, despite being CD quality. But the music is still pretty good. Level designs, bosses, powerups are all nicely done for the most part. Also, difficulty level is well-balanced. FYI, I have the PSX version.

Why would the Saturn version be better than the PSX version, since the latter has no slowdown?

Believe it or not, in some places the 3D graphics are actually better (and noticeably so) on the Saturn than the PSX version, despite each system's reputation. In any case, the actual gameplay differences between the two are pretty minimal.

The third level is the prime example: Saturn version has some nifty parallax scrolling, showing the multi-layered "city". The PSX version has none, and the level looks kinda bland.

Still a great game though, no matter what system you get it for.

Sigh, this is another reason why I miss my old Saturn more than any other old game system. Never should have sold it...still miss playing Galactic Attack and Nights :(

PLEASE don't use that *dirty* title. It's Rayforce or Layer Section. Thank you :)

I haven't played the PSX version, but I absolutely love the SS version. I would definitely put it in my top 5 shmups.

Bar's being silly, but you have to admit, Acclaim came up with a pretty lame name for the US release of Layer Section. And fuck if that game doesn't have the most names in the history of gaming.

Ahhh...now I get it...so Layer Section or Rayforce (which one?) was the Japanese name and they changed it for US release...wonder why they did that?

And where is the best place to pick up a cheap used Saturn system? I'd need an S-video cable too...

The game has at least four names:

Rayforce - Japanese Arcade
Gunlock - European Arcade
Layer Section - Japanese Saturn
Galatic Attack - US Saturn

Lots of people prefer using the Ray title, as the rest of the series is well known on the PS using Ray, Raystorm and Raycrisis. I personally can never remember what Layer Section's proper Ray title is, so I just stick with Layer Section.

Just hearing that title to imo the greatest shmup of all time drives me up the wall. I'd just like to erase Acclaim's connection with the game entirely.

Why? Acclaim did a fantastic job with the US release. TATE mode in place. No changes that I could detect (I own both the US and Japanese releases). They even left the cover picture mostly untouched. While it's far from my favoraite game and maybe I'm not close enough to the game to know what they changed (other than the name), but I thought Acclaim did a great job with the US release (and this is NOT typical for them... but you gotta give props where they are due). I actually like the name Galactic Attack better than Layer Section (layer section?!). The original Rayforce is a better name than both of them and fits much nicer with the Ray-series (Rayforce, Raystorm and Raycrisis). In any event, if every shmup title got the same treatment as Acclaim gave Layer Section, we would be a pleased bunch.

Also, the Saturn port of RayStorm is called Layer Section 2.

I guess it's no worse than the Contra/Gryzor/Probobector thing.

True, though pretty much all they did was leave most everything alone, heh. Though even that is a rarity in shmup ports, so I guess one can't complain.

Probotector was a really bad name for Contra...with the badly altered sprites and all, and Rayforce sounded really kickass as it is, I don't care if the name was 'unavailable' in the international market, the lame name attempts is inexcusable! :( :( </offtopic>

Anyways, for TFV, the PS1 version does have a couple extras that the SS version doesn't, and the SS version has minor things that the PSX version doesn't have (look at the City stage.)

PS. Ai-ya, quote pyramids hurt my eyes

AFAIK, The only thing that the PS version has over the Saturn is that gallery. That truly awesome gallery. Some amazing shmup art there.

This is a good enough reason to have both versions in your library.

[mumbles something about boss rush mode on the PSX release...]
