Spelunky (platformer / roguelike)

If you enjoy platformers, make sure to try out this game.

Basically, you're an Indiana Jones-like character and your mission is to get to the exit on the bottom of the level. Along the way you collect gold, fight enemies, save girls, avoid traps, buy stuff from shopkeepers (including shotguns, jetpacks, and even the yellow cape from Super Mario), and more.

The best thing about this game is, every level is randomly generated every time, so it never gets boring.

Also, this game is HARD! Expect to die a lot here. Cause of death includes falling on spikes a la Prince of Persia, getting crushed by a giant boulder after picking up that shiny statue, being shot in the face by the shopkeeper after trying to steal his goods, a giant mummy spitting bees at you, an alien spaceship frying you with a laser beam, and much, much more!

Heheh, the march of Spelunky continues. I've been talking about the game for days on irc and got several other people addicted as well.

bVork has gotten us all addicted to this in shmups IRC. This is the best GameMaker type game I've ever played, I could see it being Diablo levels of addicting.

ALSO, don't expect anything like Spelunker. No deaths from 2ft. jumps or anything like that, you do have to be kinda careful though. You're spelunking, that's about the only similarity between the two games. Controls more like Cave Story than anything.

So how far have you guys managed to get? On my best run I made it to level 15, all the way from level 1. I was doing really good until I stupidly died on one of those thwomps.

Also, I just got a silver cup on the first door, and I'm pretty sure it's related to the money you have. You get a bronze cup when you reach 50,000 money and a silver one when you reach 100,000. I also got a bronze cup on the fourth door, and I THINK it's related to the number of enemies killed (just got 50).

And I'm trying to figure it out why the shortcut guy isn't appearing for me when I reach World 4.

I've made it to level 11 or 12, not quite sure. My problem now is that I can reach the third area in most of my runs but usually I have no items (besides bombs and ropes) to help me, and the way that area's generated one wrong guess practically means death. Guess I need to start changing my playing style to start robbing 'em shopkeepers...unless a new version of the game changes the way third area's generated.

I have the same trophies you do and came to the same conclusions how to get them.

@Ghegs: Yeah you should try out the shop items, they help you out a lot. The compass is a must for the ice caves, it tells you where the exit is. I'm also having a lot of fun with the climbing gloves; when I reach that area I just go to one side of the level, use the wall to go all the way down, and if the exit isn't there I climb up and go to the other side.

Next time I'm buying a shotgun early and go on a rampage.

Oh, I've tried most of them out, I just very rarely find them. And there have been quite a few runs where not only did I not find the good stuff (=cape, jetpack...) there also weren't any shopkeepers with the proper goods around. Leaves me in a pickle.

My best run was up to Level 12 which is the start of the 4th area, every block is the same colour so it's hard to spot traps, I got shot by an arrow into some spikes. :x
My equipment was shotgun + climbing gloves + cape + springy shoes + compass.

My strategy involves robbing a shopkeeper for his shotgun and other items, just grab an item and run out, as soon as you get out jump so you can dodge his bullets then jump on his head and grab the shotgun he dropped, then shoot him until he doesn't move lol

I just got to level 13 for the first time, which was the first level of fourth area...guess that varies a bit, too. And all I had with me was a compass, but that item alone was enough to get me through the bastardly third area.

Somehow I managed to shoot myself with the shotgun, happened twice now :? Really annoying.

I also managed to kill the mummy on area 4 and it drops some sort of scepter. It fires homing purple rings and they kill everything on touch. Before I could enjoy it though, an arrow hit me, the scepter flew from my hands and it fell right into a pit of lava...goddammit!

Oh, and props to Lasergun for teaching me how to rob shops 8)

This game is so fun, and I suck at it. I started playing yesterday though, and [on average] I can get to level 3.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Some levels are dark and you need to use flares and other light sources to see anything. That's when surfaces are used. The game seems to simply cover the screen with black surface with holes where light sources are. Simple and effective (just like everything in this game).

I see. I haven't actually played the game as I just can't get past those signs at the beginning. What's the point in 'tutorials' in a game that is all about finding out secrets? It's a pity as I very much like the adventure part of any arcade-adventure.

All the signs tell you are the controls. If you want to skip it press escape f1.

IIRC, every drawing function goes through Direct3D [this is why fancy things like rotation, blending, and scaling are easy and possible], so even if it did use 3d, it should work in Wine.

PS: I got to level 7!

null1024 wrote:PPS: How do you steal from the shopkeeper?
There are quite a few ways to accomplish this.

-If the shop happens to have an idol trap on the same level, you can just direct the boulder to ram through it and collect the spoils.

-You can also push a pushable block and crush the shopkeeper with it if there's one handy.

-If the shop has a high enough ceiling, throw a rope up, climb it, then drop a bomb. With some luck the explosion will take out the shopkeeper.

-The most commonly used method (at least on the irc channel) is to just grab an item, run out of the store and jump immediately after exiting. This'll dodge the first round of bullets from the shopkeeper. After that it's all a matter of jumping on the shopkeeper before he gets you. He'll drop his shotgun, so be quick to get it and blast him a couple of times.

Note that after robbing a store every shopkeeper in every level afterwards will be after you, often even waiting at the level's exit. It can get tricky really fast...

You can also throw a rope up inside the store, pick up an item and climb. The shopkeeper will run out of the store, and if he gets far away enough, or dies somehow, the $ above the items will disappear and you can pick up everything without making the other shopkeepers angry. Doesn't work every time though.

Oh, by the way....VICTOLY :!:

At some point I reset my stats when I had over 150 deaths, so I have around 300 deaths total.

I'm going to set aside Spelunky for now, but I'll definitely come back to it when version 1.0 is released. Awesome game 8)

I like to destroy part of the shopkeep's floor so that when he runs out he falls through.
