PS2 Fighting Games

Post by UnscathedFlyingObject »

I'm trying to catch all the good ones. Can the more savvy fighting fans list 'em up? I usually wait until the end of a console's life span to get 'em because devs have the tendency of pushing out 100 slightly different versions of the same game. However, by then it gets so confusing I don't know which one to pick. I'm interested in anything good: hardcore, casual, 2D, and 3D, compilations. Also, comment about port quality. I'll stick to emulation if the port quality is not very good.

I'm sure some of the more savvy members will give more, but I enjoyed Arcana Heart a bit.

http://www.atlus.com/arcanaheart/

It's filled with Japanese video game girl stereotypes, but the gameplay is pretty fun. There's also a Samurai Showdown collection that has yet to be released. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is supposed to be pretty good, but I've never played it myself as it goes for more than I want to pay for it.

Thats about the limit of my knowledge. Sorry. I would recommend Arcana Heart though. I'm not a huge fighting gamer nor do I try to be, but I enjoyed it.

I only like 2D, but for me, those are the ones I found interesting on PS2:

Some ports, mainly the Neo Geo and CPS2 titles, I find deficient on PS2, because of improper graphic display, those I've left off the list. Personally I prefer the original lowres versions.

Arcana Heart
Capcom Fighting Jam (crap game, only for diehard Capcom fans)
Capcom vs. SNK 2 (also good on DC, XB)
Fate/Unlimited Codes
Guilty Gear Isuka
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus (most up-to-date version)
Hokuto No Ken
King of Fighters NeoWave
King of Fighters XI (excellent game)
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (also good on DC)
Melty Blood: Act Cadenza
NeoGeo Battle Coliseum (excellent game)
Rumble Fish (excellent game)
Samurai Spirits: Rokuban Shoubu (only get for version of Tenkaichi with two extra characters, the ports of the older SS games are crap)
Samurai Spirits: Tenkaichi Kenkakuden
Sengoku Basara X (kinda crap)
Spectral Vs Generation (cool game, but broken and iffy port)
Street Fighter EX3 (lol... yeah I love this!)

I really recommend this one. Great game! And the port quality is perfect.

Tekken 5 is really good too.

I recommend all of the Tekken games. You can try DOA too, but I like Tekken better.

And many people find it love/hate, but I really love all of the MK games.

As far as stuff that's only on the PS2, I'll toss in another vote for Arcana Heart, GGXX Accent Core, KoF XI, NeoGeo BC, and Melty Blood. I'm interested in trying the pseudo-port of Matrimelee, but haven't gotten ahold of it yet - the PS2 port of Garou is also supposed to be good (I think), but you'll hafta import it. Don't know if any of the multitudinous compilations (SF Alpha, KoF Orochi/NESTS, SF Anniversary, Fatal Fury, World Heroes, etc.) are up your alley.

The street fighter anniversary set with third strike on it is a good purchase.

We can lock the thread right now cause no one is going to recommend a better game.

And yes, the PS2 version of Garou is the best as it doesn't have the input lag found in the dc version.

street fighter anniversary
street fighter alpha anthology
marvel vs capcom 2
capcom vs snk 2

king of fighters 2002
king of fighters XI

tekken tag
tekken 4 (screw 5)
soulcalibur 3

arcana heart is one of my highlights of 2008. it's simple and yet complex at the same time. both veteran and beginners alike can have a great time playing this. The combo possibilties are almost limitless with all of the character combinations.

these are the must haves for the ps2 if you don't already have them on the dreamcast or PCB. arcana heart and KOFXI are going to be the cheapest and easiest to find.

The best version of Garou is the Neo Geo version. PS2 has filtered graphics, looks terrible. :?

I was hugely dissappointed with NG battle colliseum.
I gues "gg ac plus" would be your best option, but still so expensive.
I like: Hokuto no ken (and = cheap)

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Darkstalkers Anthology
King of Fighters 2006/Maximum Impact 2
SVC Chaos SNK Versus Capcom
Samurai Spirits 6: Tenkaichi Kenkakuden
Samurai Spirits: Rokuban Shoubu/Anthology (mentioned but I reiterate, get the U.S. version when it comes out...)
KOF 2000-2001
KOF Orochi Saga
Guilty Gear X+ if you want a taste of the original.
Saint Seiya: Hades Chapter
Mortal Kombat Armageddon if you like making your own characters.

Also I'm aware of a certain "disc" floating around that has Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I guess I don't consider Garou on the neo to be just a version. It's the real deal. This guy doesn't have a neo though, and probably doesn't want to shell out the dough for it.

3 discs actually. Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for MKII and MK3. MKD Premium Pack bonus disc for MKI and MKA Premium Edition bonus disc for UMK3. Weak emulation overall though since Start doesn't function in MAT2 (so no way to play Smoke) and no button config in the bonus discs (and UMK3 hidden characters must be unlocked every time).

I meant what I said, by "disc". All 3 of them are on there. Ermac or not, it's a nice collection.

The ones i listed were simply the MUST HAVES, in my opinion. otherwise there would have been many more.

But that does remind me, arcana heart 2 is due out in april for the jap ps2 as well, can't wait!

I really want Marvel vs Capcom 2, but the going price for it is ridiculous. I have my cousin's copy which is all thrashed out, (still works though) and it is great fun. I know it's very unbalanced, but I don't know how to pull off the super cheap stuff anyways. I personally like SF3 a lot. The problem is finding someone to play with.

I'm thinking about Street Fighter Alpha Anthology. I wonder if it has filtered graphics like SF3. That sucks.

I want Garou too! Love that game.

Too many wants too little cash. Damn.

I'll check out some of the other stuff too.

I believe you can toggle the filter in the options (For SF3)?
