Shinobi - Sega Master System.
Preferably played on SMEG, an SMS Emulator for the dreamcast.
Play with Saturn pads and play with RGB-SCART cable.

Very good playability.
the hand to hand weapons can be cancelled by anything, release of the button, jump, etc. especially the chain. The Bonus games are a blast as well. You will become good at them after a while
Ninja Commando is better than 99% of the games mentioned thus far. As is Super Ninja-kun. In fact, Super Ninja-kun is better than Ninja Commando.
Ninja Baseball Bat Man is the best Ninja game I've ever seen. And the best beat 'em up ever made.
My other personal favorites are Shinobi 3, Ninja Spirit, Ninja Gaiden (OG), and Kaze Kiri. Even though Ninjas rule, most of the games they star in kinda suck.

*edit* I see we are counting Strider now. Okay then, I really really like Strider 2 and the first one is pretty good too. And if we count him we have to count his doppleganger from Osman/Cannon Dancer which is also totally fargin awesome.

What system is Super Ninja-kun for? I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the right game...
Ninja Baseball Bat Man sounds hilarious, I'll have to look that one up.
Also, what is this Osman/Cannon Dancer? Sounds like I'm missing out on something again.

Yeah, right...... What is Google? eh? .... oooooh!
This is a truly GREAT topic.
Any other games?
Osman/Cannon Dancer Anyone own this one?
Picked it up off of these boards when there was a group buy. I really like Strider but wasn't blown away by Osman. It's fine, just not nearly as good as one would have thought with all the hype. I promptly sold it as the price wasn't justified imo and I figured let someone else play it as it was going to sit in the closet.
The Ninja (SMS)
Ninja Princess (arcade and various old systems)
Both The Ninja and Ninja Princess are surprisingly addicting for some reason. Neither have high production values or anything, but are quite entertaining.
Hell yeah Strider's a ninja, just not in the traditional sense In all the official Capcom descriptions, I've seen the word ninja poke around a few times. Maybe it's because of the awful American Genesis box art that so many people don't consider him one...I know I didn't for over a decade because of that.
Ninja Crusaders is a poor man's Ninja Gaiden to me; but I've always got some fun out of it for some reason Not many people seem to remember it was also a Sammy game.
Legend of the Mystical Ninja 64 Starring Goemon is one of the best 32bit/64bit games to ever come out...hilarious and fun. Wish I could find a copy.
Sorry, couldn't resist. I asked that a few posts earlier and it's definatly on topic since it's a ninja game. Actually, Maru's Mission is a localization of one of the many Jajamaru games. Has anyone played these?
As far as I know, Super Ninja-kun is for SNES. Japanese name for Super Ninja Boy?
Does anyone remember the old ninja game for PC (WAY back in the day) called Saboteur and it's sequel? Those games rocked.
Classics, though I played them on the Spectrum. Now there's a game that would make for a nice next-gen update
there is also kengo, a followup to ninja spirit by irem (92 or 93). not very good though.
Shit, I never heard of this. Was it ported or emulated? Ninja Spirit is one of my all-time faves so I'm gonna have to play this even if it isn't that great. why is that by the way?

1) Super Famicom, and it's a doozy. You owe it to yourself if you like platformers and/or ninjas.
2) Hilarious indeed. Plus it has awesome gameplay. The supers are to die for.
3) You are missing out, yes. Osman is the bomb. It's a Strider clone in just about every way. And that is good. The only downside is that it's quite cheap with the mandatory memorization. Enemies will appear or fire on you in such a way that if you don't know about them beforehand, you will get hit. But that's no big whoop. People have been forced to memorize shooters for years and don't complain.
Doh. I should have realized it before. Of course Super Ninja Kun is completely different from Super Ninja Boy since the US Ninja Boy series are just localizations of the Chinese Land/Chinese World games (which probably originally had nothing to do with ninjas). It's more related to the Jajamaru games. Anyway, I made a couple posts asking about Jajamaru.
Pacrappa: Sweet, I'll check them out. Yay, more ninja games~
The "Ninja Boy" games don't really count since they're not about ninjas at all... as BrianC mentioned, they're actually called "Super Chinese," and are about kung-fu kids, not ninjas. I did space the Jajamaru games though - those are indeed about a ninja. They're really old, and I don't get much fun out of em' anymore for the most part... but they are indeed old-school ninja games.
The original Ninja Kun is one of the games on that controller thing I have. It's a simple game where you climb up and down a mountain while trying to kill of the enemies in a stage. The first Ninja Jajamaru Kun plays like Ninja Kun, but you have to break blocks to go to higher platforms. The SNES Super Ninja Kun is like a beefed up version of the first Ninja Kun mixed with Mario with a touch of the first Ninja Jajamaru Kun. Both of those Ninja Kuns are very cool, from what I played.
There is a GBA Jaleco collection with some of the Ninja Jajamaru Kun games in it. I checked on Play-Asia and the Jajamaru games in it are two of the Famicom ones and one new to GBA Jajamaru game. No Ninja Kuns (which seem to be closely related).
Yeah, I had the Jaleco GBA collection before it got lost in an unfortunate airplane luggage problem For whatever reason I just can't get into the Jajamaru games. They're pretty famous here in Japan though, so a lot of people do.
Tar-Palantir wrote:The sequel to Kid Niki (not released in US or Europe) was a very solid platformer, much better than the original in every aspect.
How many Ninja-Kun games were made for the NES?
There's also a GB b/w Kid Niki that plays quite differently from the original and actually plays somewhat like Super Mario Land.
There are about 4 Ninja-Kun games on the NES, if you count the two Jajamaru games that play like Ninja-kun. 2 of the Jajamaru games are RPGs and another is a platformer that plays nothing like the Ninja-kun games, so the remaining three Jajamarus definatly don't count.
