Seriously now, to all people voting Ibara as the worst STG, it seems to me they never really played an unplayable shmup.

I like Ibara a lot and IMO its perfectly playable, unless... this:

I can play unplayable and mediocre games for a good laugh. I can't play Ibara nor for a good laugh or seriously.

It has nothing to do with rank. The characters, graphics, the mediocre sub-par mashed up PS2 port, loading times, or sound. The impossible waves where you're expected to bomb and the constant and monotonous bombing all feels way too Ikaruga-like. You're seriously expected to bomb houses for medals. That isn't a shmup, that's a house bombing simulator. The tiny bullets don't help either, really. It just isn't fun to play.

ikaruga like lolwut? ps2 port running through component looks fine , the loading times suck a little , the arrange mode is superb bonus , and the game itself is wonderful and complex which requires more learning then micro hitbox fluke dodging, i take it your not a fan of the seminal garegga or batrider either?

Looks like some idiot doesn't know how to rotate his TV, or he's just too lazy.
loading times,
Loading times? Someone must have been playing a shitty rip of the game they got off BitTorrent, legit game works fine. Either that or your PS2 is shitting out, stop using it as a DVD movie player. Jesting aside, loading times = average for a PS2 Cave port. You know the engrish screens between stages in ESPgaluda? What the shit did you think the game was doing in the background?
or sound.
Sound quality was great. Use a better TV or stereo system.
The impossible waves where you're expected to bomb and the constant and monotonous bombing all feels way too Ikaruga-like.
BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. Stay away from Radiant Silvergun, Psyvariar, and Dodonpachi if you don't like falling into certain routines.
You're seriously expected to bomb houses for medals.
Please, cry some more. House-bombing was fun and satisfying, especially when you get 10k medals before the end of stage 1.
That isn't a shmup, that's a house bombing simulator.
You say that like it's a bad thing.
The tiny bullets don't help either, really.
BAWWWWWW. Again, stop playing on Yoko. Problem solved. Still having a problem? Get your eyes checked.
It just isn't fun to play.
Entirely subjective.

The PS2 port does suck ass as does the load time. Double bonus if you have a shitty PS2 and it takes longer to load, because that fucks with the stage layout. But it's still pretty playable as long as you TATE it.

Also there are no waves of bullets in Ibara that are impossible to dodge with the possible exception of the final form of the final boss, or some of the crap on Harder mode. If you can't dodge something, you either suck or go about with absolutely no concept of rank at all.

Complaining about using bombs for scoring... uh... yeah I just don't even know there. Heaven forbid you play a game where those bombs they give you are actually used for something! And to be fair, it's not the first Cave game where bombing is used for scoring either.

Tiny Bullets. Get a bigger TV I guess. That's nothing new for Cave games or shooters in general.

Truth. IMO, the load times weren't god-awful, persey, though they were sliiiiiiiightly longer than DDPDOJ or ESPG's. About on-par with Mushihime-sama with the loading time. Key difference being, Ibara was actually WORTH the wait between stages.

nash87 wrote:without a doubt it has to be Silver Surfer on the NES. The gameplay was so horrid. one of the levels comprised of shooting rubber ducks and some sort of alligator/lizard things. It was one of those shmups that had walls that would instant kill you if you touched them. i normally wouldn't mind that in a shmup, but when you have the biggest hit box ever it just bad. It also doesn't make sense that silver surfer die from barely grazing the end of a wall, or rubber duck for that matter.
Try to not touch the walls or ducks. Helps a lot.

Holy fuck, learn how to quote a person properly. I am not breaking up this katamari of shit.

The former of your response is redundant as I wasn't questioning those areas, so I guess you didn't read properly, or something. Also, it isn't feasible for me to rotate a 29", 90 pound CRT sideways and it'll probably end up scratching my table in the process, but that's my personal situation. The tiny bullets in Ibara are hilarious, really, it almost makes them including yoko mode a wasted effort. People shouldn't be expected to rotate their televisions either. I don't mind the tiny bullets, but some of it makes me wonder how they passed beta testing. The PS2 port is pretty much a joke.

What, you're defending CAVE games now? Can you try being consistent in trolling here? I don't quite get how you can jum from one extreme to the other.

I have a supergun setup (+ XRGB for a Japanese 21pin only) for vertically positioning my monitor. But why would I buy the PCB of a game which I really, really dislike? It's pretty pointless.

The worst shmups I have ever played are those from Cave and Psikyo. I don't want to be a chartered accountant, I want to be a Fast Moving Hero of Mass Destruction.

Silver Surfer is probably my pick for worst. It's furiating that it has such good music but plays like it does, just adds insult to injury.

[I know this thread is 5 years old, but a similar thread just got locked due to similarity to this one so I guess I'm allowed to post]

Mine would be Flash Beryllium. It's a horribly butchered Flash port of Go Beryllium; it has the same energy system I hate so much, the creator seems incapable of drawing straight lines, it's reduced to only three stages, the bullet patterns are ridiculously random, scoring is excessively simple, controls are messed up on a very fundamental level (X shoots and Z bombs >_<), hit detection is awful, two of the three bosses throw walls at you, and to top it all off the game also makes some hilarious mistakes in terms of nuclear physics (For instance, it seems to confuse quark flavours with colours)

This is the kind of post this thread should have more of. It's finding these anti-gems - little weeping pustules on the gaming politic - that should be mentioned in here, so they can be named, shamed, and the bad ideas that prompted their making burst mercilessly. We need far less of the "I can't figure out how to play this top 50 game" whining and sour grapes. If a huge number of people like the game, it certainly doesn't belong in here, even if you shouldn't be faulted for not liking it. Back on topic now...

I am kind of intrigued by Lurky's post too. Whenever I hear "bad FMV game" I think of TETSUOOO GAYDEN (written "Gaiden" but mispronounced in-game), a game that blew its budget on FMV, speech ("SCOAR INCREEES") and other things that haven't aged well. The basic game itself is a very simple shooter with a scoring system that seems determined to stifle fun. However, for its incompetence at being fun, it's not terribly buggy that I can see, impossible to play (according to its idea of what's "fun") or have any other feature that makes it anything more than an embarrassing and boring shooter.

I see that Novastorm (one word apparently) is another Psygnosis game...from the description I thought of the FM Towns games like Scavenger and Microcosm. I don't know if those are in the same vein as Novastorm, but apparently Novastorm is also called Scavenger 4 (according to psygnosis.org/games/). But they certainly seemed grainy, hateful, and hatefully grainy from the videos I looked at on YouTube.

Master of Weapon surely wasn't the best game ever seen but the only thing that really killed it for me was the scoring trick, which I couldn't get to go down repeatedly. But it wasn't too bad with the ship nicely powered up; not a patch on Thundercade or UN Defense Force: Earth Joker. I did think it was more interesting to play than the original ground-bombing vert, Xevious. Zaxxon is cool though.

Now, I could say something obvious like Mission Craft, Space Dreams or Monopoly...

But to be frank, it's Slap Fight/Alcon. It's Xevious with Gradius' power-up setup.... And none of the fun of either. For any other company this'd be just average at best... But we're talking Toaplan here. That's right, Batsugun and Dogyuun toaplan.

To be fair, Alcon was one of their earlier works... So they, at the very least, get a most improved award.
