Cave Soundtracks

Post by KindGrind »

So there have been a couple of threads recently that had to do with music in shmups in general, but I'm getting more interested in music in Cave games, as many of these soundtrack plain rock. I'm curious... According to you,

a) What Cave game had the best soundtrack ?

b) Also, is the DOJ/Ketsui soundtrack worth it? Are the tracks on the CD different than those on the soundtrack bundled with the Ketsui superplay?

c) What's your thoughts on the Galuda/DOJ remix CD?

Thanks!

Edit: Typo.

I can't answer either of the latter questions, but Mushi's my personal favorite Cave soundtrack.

a) ESPGaluda II

b) It comes with 3 Ketsui arranged tracks. To me its well worth the money.

c) Since I'm not a huge fan of the DOJ tracks, I bought it just for the Galuda remixes alone.

a) Ketsui, DOJ, Ibara, Daifukkatsu
b) Sure.
c) Should be good, being the remixes used in the PS2 DOJ/ESPG.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I like the Death Smiles OST.
And of course another vote for Ketsui and Ibara.

a) ESPRa.De., ESPGaluda. Ibara was ok, too.

b) Yes it is, although I think the Ketsui arcade version tracks are the same as the CD bundled with the INH package. You get arranged tracks with the Cave release, and shitty mobile versions with the INH release.

c) Exact same as the arranged tracks from the PS2 versions of the games, which are quite easily ripped from the discs yourself (ADPCM data for DOJ, ADX files for ESP).

There are arranged tracks on the Ketsui/DOJ split album that don't come with the INH DVD.

Not a must have.

Must haves, imo:

Ketsui/Dodonpachi DOJ
Ibara
Espgaluda II

No thanks on Espgaluda. Not horrible, but really not my thing. Feels a bit generic, aside from some admittedly awesome hooks.

I'd recommend, though, the excellent:

Ibara (very much in the vein of Ys IV's excellent music)
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu
Espgaluda 2 (little more interesting than Espga 1 IMO)
Ketsui
Mushihime 1 and 2

...for they are all above and beyond good.

a) ESP Ra. De. The first stage's theme is so damn cool I don't mind playing it over and over... and over...just to listen to it. And on top of that, the boss battle theme is even better, to the point of making boss milking actually bearable. Not really. Ibara is a close second.

Progear stage 1.

And the final boss theme reminds me of Norfair from Super Metroid.

Ha! They said I was crazy!

They're probably right though.

I hate all the other music from Progear, aside from the select and Name Entry songs though. Especially the boss theme.

My favorite Cave soundtrack is probably Futari, just because it's so darn goofy. I do have to say though, the DOJ/Ketsui soundtrack is one amazing combo.

Hrm, nice. I must admit Progear first lvl track is awesome. You truly get the feeling you're embarking on a very epic journey :) Reminds me of Neverending Story, for some reason. The rest of the soundtrack sounds really average, though.

Last boss music really sounds like Norfair. I thought so too.

ESPgaluda is probably my favourite Cave soundtrack so far. Mushi's also excellent, although I listened to it A LOT in the past, and must say it gets a bit tiring. Will look into ESPgaluda2 and maybe Esprade (which I'm playing lots of these days)

I would never have thought of Ibara for best music, although it seems quite popular. I've played the game on several occasions but never really seriously. If I saw the bullets more, I think I could appreciate it. I've got the exact same problem with Garegga... I get real angry when I'm killed by a bullet camouflaged under shrapnel. Batrider's better on that front, but I've never been much of a Raizing fan overall. Shame on me, I guess, but I'd rather play a screen filled with clear bullets than die to an invisible bullet.

But I digress.

Not going to identify entire soundtracks, but there are some particular levels in Cave games that I really love:

Mushihimesama: Stg 4 is one of my all time favourite shmup tracks. It makes me up my game!

Espgaluda: Stg 3 - shmup uplifting dance music at its best.

Ibara: Stage 3 is awesome. This soundtrack has a really retro feel, but in a good way.

DOJ: Stage 2 - reminds me of when I was in Japan. Atmospheric. (And the Hibachi theme, serious stuff.)

Dangun Feveron - Stage 2 is the disco shit, although this entire soundtrack is just too funky too ignore.

ESPrade - Stage 5 is driving.

I like the Mushi OST the best overall.

But there's one track from the Esprade OST, 'Desperate School' that I can listen to over and over again, it's just so wonderful.

I thought the Guwange/ESP Ra.De. OST was well worth it. Has both original and arranged versions and it really shines!

The only one I like is Ibara. Guwange is the only other one I can stand. Donpachi is the worst. Then again, I haven't played the post-PS2 games, so I'm not really going to judge anything without experiencing it in context.
