Naxat appreciation thread
There's a lot of talk about the collected output of Cave, Psikyo, Compile etc but not much about Naxat, at least not lately. So here's a Naxat appreciation thread. I do not profess to know much about Naxat myself. Where they both a developer and a producer or did they merely produce games develped by others? When it comes to diversity at least, no one can beat Naxat.
My own current favourite from Naxat is W-Rings on the PCE. What's yours?

Naxat developed stuff in-house, as well as publish games from other developers. Most of their shooters were developed by different third party teams.
On the PC-Engine the Naxat logo is for the most part a mark of quality. A very good software company at the time. Unfortunately they kind of imploded during the 32-Bit age.
My favorite Naxat game is Nexzr (developed by Kaneko/Interstate, same team as Star Parodier). Nexzr might even be my favorite PCE shooter.

i was looking into Naxat a while ago, and found that they did some nice puzzlers worth looking into too:
Soroban Gu on Wonderswan (color) is pretty neat. makes great use of the systems double d-pad kinda control layout in tate mode to streamline a vaguely Yoshi's Cookie like puzzler with a far nicer chaining system.
Puzzle de Shoubuyo! Wootama-chan for Gameboy Color has a nice cutesy bizarre art-style and gets pretty manic with huge screen-clearing actions. (still need to find a copy of this some time...)

Yes one more there !w-ring wrote:W-Ring is fantastic!!
One of my favorite games on the PCE. I am still looking for a few warp points on it.
Any other W-Ring fans out there lurking?
One of the best horiz ever made !
I enjoy it more than any Gradius, its source of inspiration. And what a soundtrack ! The best chiptunes ever made !
About Nexzr : great vert but a little bit unfair when naked. Short of that it's a wonderfull oldschool simple shmup.
There's Psycho Chaser too. A fun little pedestrian shmup. According to some source I forgot it's made by the team who made Override. The latter is published by Data East, so it's a little bit out of topic, but it's a real gem too. A fast vert like Battle Garrega, furious shooting at its best !
edit : Psycho Chaser and Override were made by Sting. They made a sequel/remix of Override named Last Batallion on x68000.

It's not that easy on hard.No_not_like_Quake wrote:I thought W ring or w/e was good, good chip tunes but seemed a little easy. I'm genuinely interested in what makes some think it is one of the best horis.
I play on normal but, what is great, is the ambiance, a sort of dark universe but not as gory as the darksneit doujin stuff. It's great as a simple shmup, a bit on the easy side but long enough to not be bored with. Moreover it gets tougher later on. You have a choice of alternate stages so it add a bit of variety between credits (even though the alternate stages seems better than most non hidden ones). No shmup as to be hard as nail to be enjoyable

This game is 50% gameplay, 50% cheese (design music). It's a sort of Gradius for the retro art freaks

Same thing with Override : it's easy on the 1st loop but enjoyable. The 2nd is way harder. it's best to get a lot of extends during the 1st one. The gameplay is fast n furious. Graphics are not constantly top art but, due to the speed, you can't focus on them anyway. Music is quality enough to be enjoyed during gameplay.
Both games are appreciated if you feel them. It has to tick with you, it's almost like love. You may love someone your neighbor may not.
It's out of control in the shmup love area
