"On Thursday, authorities searched for two teens — a boy and girl, ages 14 and 17 — who fled an Omaha hospital as their mother tried to abandon them. The mother was trying to take them from the car to the emergency room when they took off."

Ok I reread the rest of it and apparently they couldnt take her into custody.
Still its pretty sad that the parents need help so badly they are willing to let their children go. I don't think that these people are necessarily horrible parents but they need help and from what Im reading they just aren't getting the help they need.

just another symptom of our horrible society.
What would Gene Roddenberry have to say about this...

When my wife and I heard about the "Nebraska Policy" we laughed about when we have kids we can threaten them with a road trip to Nebraska if they are giving us grief, heh.

people abandon their children all the time in every state. on the street.
at least in Nebraska they can be placed directly on foster homes and will go to school.
the ultimate responsability for the welfare of all children falls on the state. the only question that remains is what do we do to parents that cannot, or refuse to, provide in place of the state.
how do we separate that cannots from the will nots?
if a family becomes homeless, must the children too?
do you really think that a mentaly unstable parent must raise their children, or go to jail? if you want to give away your child you ARE mentaly unstable.

I really do think a license to have kids just might not be a bad thing. You would think somehitng like that would be in the constitution but they missed that one

I totally disagree with the idea that you are mentally unstable if you want to give your child away. What alot of people fail to realize is how difficult it is to raise a child especially as they grow up. I've found that the older the child is the more difficult it is and the more difficult it is to get help for any issues they have.
As far as the cannots, I suspect that these abandoned teenagers were troubled teens. Granted I am taking this from the mother who tried to abandon her adopted daughter after trying to get help from various places. I believe that these parents have exhausted all avenues to help their children and feel that it is in their best interests to become wards of the state where the state will have to provide the help that these parents tried themselves to get.
Contrary to what most may think it takes an incredible amount of strength to decide its for the best that you give up your child for any reason.
I've found the whole thing rather humorous. The degree to which people have been willing to go to simply get rid of their children has been pretty awe-inspiring. Perhaps I just have an over-developed sense of irony, but as a teacher, I deal with parents every day who are finding that having kids didn't end up being the GREAT THING they thought it would be. Hah! So taking a road trip to Nebraska is a sort of fantasy escape now.
Just wait, the new American dream is going to be being single, childless and not having a shit ton of loans/mortgages, etc. In 3...2....1....
Edit: Do you think they'll be a state you can drop your spouse off at?

There was a show called Kids Town that had a bunch of kids in a town pretty much fending for themselves. Had to set up their own government and everything. The show would have been a hit if it weren't missing the automatic weapons and explosive neckbraces.
