I've been thinking about topics I've seen on these boards...

If you're happy and content with your SNES and GENESIS or other old console, than you should stay content with it.
If you think about, the gaming industry is all about vanity. Having the latest and greatest consoles and the games for them is a primary movitator of the masses. I mean, if you think about, wasn't HALO just another first person shooter that got everyone's praise and approval. I think HL2 can have the same thing said about it, but there's something else to it that keeps me from just saying it's another Shooter. Again, It's all about having the latest and Greatest console and the games for it.
If you're more content with the SNES and GENESIS and any other old console, Than you're doing yourself a favour by not going with the crowds.
That should say something about yourself, too. Because if you're playing R-type for the NES, rather than going to buy HALO 2 or something among those lines, than you're saving yourself the worry about whether or not you're playing the coolest console. Just play the games to enjoy it for all time, and not to be like "Oh-I-Beat-This-Game-So-I'll-Just-throw-it-in-my-collection-bin-and-forget-
about-it."

You guys (and gal) are wistful for the days of old. Deep inside all of you, a voice celebrates any time you hear about some company developing an side-scrolling. And with the release of Alien Hominid, R-type final, Gradius 4 and 5, Metal Slug 4 and 5 and many other I refuse to type, much less pronounce. That voice is kinda getting hoarse.
But face it, It's all about money. Those latest game with the great graphics, gameplay, cinema are made to sell the systema and the game itself. They're targeted toward massive horde of gamers, casual and hardcore. And those games make a whole ****load of money for them.
When a company makes a Side-scrolling shooter, It's basically going to be an half-arsed effort upon the creators or something great (like Einhander.) It's all about money, you see.
Do you wonder why Square isn't hard at work on an Einhander two? It's because they're milking the FF cow for all it's worth. Maybe in the future they'll make the sequel to it (Einhander). But not right now.

It's me wearing a badge I bought from the souvenirs shop of the Tate Britain gallery in London, which I visited one day after the shmupmeet to enjoy some art. I was still in a shmup-mood from the day before, so my first thought when entering the shop and seeing all the products (pencils, badges, shirts, etc.) with "TATE" written on them was "Whee, look at all the merchandise specially made for people who flip their TVs!".

I just couldn't resist buying one of them. For the avatar pic I'm wearing it vertically, of course.

There's a booleg clone of R-Type for NES/Famicom called "Magic Dragon". It's um... interesting. I don't think it's part of the GoodNES set, so I don't remember where I got it from.

Playing brand new video games isn't just about vanity. There's a certain feeling you get when you're experiencing something fresh and state-of-the-art. I dunno, it's hard to describe, but it all goes with the love of the medium. I play games to pass the time and escape from my otherwise dull and monotonous life. Having brand new technology and marvelling at its performance, pondering how such forces of nature allow it to exist, definitely helps in being absorbed.

Ummm...I guess I am the blame for all these new topics....

I am just a jaded gamer who begun his gaming days back when the NES was new. I have seen alot of changes over the past years, some good, some bad. I know it wasn't all gumdrops and rainbows back then either, but damn I miss the good old days when shmups dominated the arcades. I resent the new machines because I am tired of wasting money on games that don't offer as much fun as the old school stuff. But, I recently bought Midnight Club 3 and having a blast with it, so don't think I am some crazy guy who has locked himself away in a closet full of NES, SNES, and Saturn games. I'm just really picky about what I play, that's all. My crusade against the next-gen stops here.

Example: When I was in high school, everyone had mullets and listened to Rock/ Heavy Metal. Nowadays, everyone wants to be "gangsta".

Rap is, at this point, not going anywhere. It's been around for a few dacades now and there's been no dip in overall popularity. Grunge was a subgenre of rock, and while grunge did indeed fade away, other kinds of rock took its place. Likewise, rap used to be fun party music, then ganster rap became a hit (NWA had a huge part in this), and lately it seems to be tipping back to party music. For the sake of everyone's sanity, I'll ignore the Insane Clown Posse and their ilk.

Rap is, at this point, not going anywhere. It's been around for a few dacades now and there's been no dip in overall popularity. Grunge was a subgenre of rock, and while grunge did indeed fade away, other kinds of rock took its place. Likewise, rap used to be fun party music, then ganster rap became a hit (NWA had a huge part in this), and lately it seems to be tipping back to party music. For the sake of everyone's sanity, I'll ignore the Insane Clown Posse and their ilk.

Yeah groups like the Rock steady crew had nuff fun party/break dance tracks too. NWA did help to boost gangsta rap, not to mention Above the law, and the whole Deathrow/West coast sound that made gangsta rap so popular.

I doubt Hip Hop is going any time soon, though I think at it's current state it's not as creative as the "oldskool".

Well said! Heck, I remember being 'blown away ' by Atari 2600 graphics because they were so much better than Pong, and they were in COLOR! When my friend got a VIC 20 and we used to load up Gorf and Lunar Lander from cassette tape... OH MY GOD! Then we got a C64 soon after release, with a disk drive! The uberness!

I love games, and I love technology, both new and old. I imported my Saturn at great expense because I wanted to play Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA, though these days I would be more interested in playing one of the awesome 2D titles that came much later.

It usually only takes a 'must have' game or two for me to buy a system, and I'm just as excited by the promise of new, powerful hardware. Alright, now I'm starting to ramble...

That's because the C64 rocks. I first messed around with one in '87, and it was awesome then, so I can imagine what it must've been like in 1980. Love that sound chip. I had this game called Aztec Challenge where you play this dude in a loincloth going through these different stages trying to get through this pyramid. The game was pretty lame, but I loved the 1 music track it had. Taipan, the Forbidden Forest games, Fearless Fred, Coil Cop, IK2Plus... all great BGM.

When I moved away from home 6 years ago, I didn't bring my C64 with me, and my mom gave it away to Goodwill. At the time I didn't care, but now I'm kicking myself in the ass for letting it go.

Aztec Challenge... Ah, the memories. Caverns of Kafkha (I think that's how it was spelled) was another Cosmi game with music from the same guy. Again, average game, great music.

So...there's NO oldschool goodness available for the PS2? I don't understand your argument, because I, like most people on this forum, bought a next gen console because of the FUN factor.

I've got news for you, I LOVE 2D games, and between PS1 and PS2 releases, there's a whole ****load available for play on the PS2. And I'm talking about the AMERICAN PS2-the Japanese one has even more.

And as for why Square hasn't made a sequel to Einhander-did it ever occur to you that shmups aren't exactly mainstream anymore?? They NEVER WILL make a sequel to Einhander for precisely that reason.

I don'e know if we need more topics like this, but dtdg has a good point.

Lately, I just haven't been enjoying my PSTwo. And I have like every American shmup for it, except for a few like TF V, Xevious 3D/G+, and In the Hunt.

I don't know, this has happened to me EVERY time I get a PS2. I have emailed TZD to see if they have any more new Turbo Duo's left (they did a few months ago); maybe I'd be better off with one of those.
