DUX for Dreamcast

Stage 3 video up.
Nothing special and NO MATCH for Last Hope's stage 3 (which was one of the most atmospheric stages in a hori shmup EVER) but it looks ok.
Quite a few bullets on screen too, I didn't expect that.

Can someone explain what happens at 00:14? There's a bullet going through the ship, right?
Edit: Nevermind, it must be some kind of an item.
Edit 2: Uhh, that scene at 01:30… Let's say I just don't get it. :|

Official site is up: http://www.dux.hucast.net/
There is a new trailer on that site as well.
Wonder why all the powerups share the same image ?

I was referring to the icons under the "System" heading on the official home page. They all look the same and refer to the same PNG file.RHE wrote:They don't. Every weapon power up has specific colors, which isn't very easy to make out in the video. The trailer is already on youtube btw.rtw wrote:Wonder why all the powerups share the same image ?

I am still sceptical about the graphics. Isn't there a way to exchange the explosion sprites (or sprite)? They look really gruesome, even the Mega Drive could do better.
Rest of the game looks ok, but don't feel offended if I say that I'm not really staring in awe at that trailer. It seems a bit too slow and spongy to me, maybe I'm wrong.

THE ETERNAL
Almost every level looks like a claustrophobic nightmare. Almost no room to move before you're looking at slamming into a wall or something. I guess that could work .. would probabally annoy a lot of people though. It seems there's some good strategy going on in the trailer. Hopefully this one turns out to be pretty fun. If you don't mind really tight spaces ..
And please fix the explosions allready, they still vanish in mid-animation.

I have a feeling the game will be easier to manage than what the trailer leads on...It's obvious the player in the video is making what seems to be a rough situation seem easy - almost by some calcualted and memorized pattern. I know that if someone had shown me a video of the maze section in Pulstar's "Dangerous Forest" Stage 5 (before I played it), I would have probably had similar concerns. That's the thing about tactical hori's, they can actually look as "hairy" as bullet-hell verts!Almost every level looks like a claustrophobic nightmare. Currently the hitzone should be 24x16px which is pretty small for an R-Type game. Don't get fooled by the chunky look of the ship, its pretty much the same size then in Pulstar, but the wings which aren't part of the hitzone are standing out. The final size of the hitzone isn't estimated yet though.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:I'm sure the game is fine but I wonder how big the hitbox is? Those levels look really narrow, something like a game boy game with big sprites.
Nothing wrong with that as the game has not many times seen befor style - the nearest thing is Border Down. And outside the shooter genre, Katamaris stlye isnt' everyones cup of tea either, which hasn't been an issue.aventus wrote:I am still sceptical about the graphics.
That's not so easy as making good looking explosions is a task for itself. Personally I don't mind weak looking explosions if that's the only issue with a game but most people playing this genre may disagree with that, so maybe I can improve that.Isn't there a way to exchange the explosion sprites (or sprite)? I'm note sure what you mean by saying spongy but the game is still the most fast R-Type like game I know. All R-Types games I know are more slow then DUX.It seems a bit too slow and spongy to me, maybe I'm wrong
Yeah, It sure works and as your ship won't instantly break when scratching around walls those claustrophobic stuff is pretty much forgivable. I think there's more room to move in DUX then in most bullets hells, so that shouldn' be a issue.Udderdude wrote:Almost every level looks like a claustrophobic nightmare. And I hope it plays as it looks.Octopod wrote:Game looks very pretty to me. I like the way it looks.

So this game is an r-type game with bullet hell features? Color me interested. Actually I've been interested in this game for a while now, this just makes it better. I just certainly hope its less difficult than Last Hope, that game was just unforgiving. Way too many cheap deaths in that game that just ruined the fun. But Dux looks like an improvement in every aspect.

Yes, the game is less difficult then Last Hope. It's not going to be a very easy game but way more accessible and forgiving.John845 wrote:I just certainly hope its less difficult than Last Hope, that game was just unforgiving.
December 2008 is aimed. I hope we can hold it but if theres another delay it won't take as much time the previous delays.Wonderbanana wrote:Any idea when it's going to be ready?

Should take 2 maybe 3 weeks.lilmanjs wrote:once the game is done and ships, how long should it take to get to the middle of the united states?
From a personal point of view I'm ill standing to my word as I'm not a fan of LEs but for the future of HUCAST.net it's important to do such LEs as they quarant sales. I mean you would look much more sad, when there couldn't be any further HUCAST.net games. No?RackGaki wrote:René wrote:

The thing is, the development of DUX takes way longer then expected so there has to be an compensation for that. And this time I don't think anyone has to be dissapointed with the LE, as the OST included is also sold seperatly. It's mainly a collectors item for people who want to have there NTSC-J collection look pretty and it also assures further HUCAST.net games. All in all, it warrants that all people can playing this kind of games on their DC.
Long as I can turn that regular edition into an LE, I'll be happy. I preordered with $42 back on May 6th, when all that was promised was a little poster for the first buyers. Having this thing fit right with my NTSC/J titles would be a must. - count me in as one of the picky ones.
If you can PM me about the details of making my preorder an LE, that would be swell. I'll gladly pay the difference, but I had no idea of the change until I checked this thread again - I've been sitting on a pretty old preorder.

Alright, then everyone who wants to upgrade can contact me at info@hucast.net
I thought its self-evident that pre-orders can be upgraded, but maybe I should have made this more clear.
