Are there any Playstation 3 shmups?

Post by Neith »

I'm considering getting a PS3 for christmas and was wondering if there were any shmups available for it. Since the games are region free it would be open to Japanese releases, where the shmups would be if there are any.
Thanks for reading, let me know.

There's 1942 joint strike, and nothing else, unless you count crap arena shooters. Supposedly Soldner X is coming soon, but who knows if it's any good.

I think EVERYONE knows how "good" SlowDinner X is.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

All retail shmups are on the 360 or Wii this generation (so far).

Wii VC = Oldschool console
360 = Modern Arcade

Everyday Shooter is by far the best shooter on PS3.

They are both excellent, and too different to compare IMO.

But these are arenas. He may be looking for real shmups.

what is the explanation behind all this?

is this microsoft's trojan horse?
do the developers hate the ps3's lack of region coding?
WFT?

PS3 is a bitch to develop for and dev kits are expensive
Wii is a little on the underpowered side
X360 is pretty easy to develop for in comparison and is more powerful

And they know the shmup fans will go out and buy a 360 just for the shmups .. >_>

The Wii has Castle of Shikigami III too. In fact, it was the version that got an English localization.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Yeah I'd like to get my hands on a jp 360, but for now I have a few live arcade games on my US 360 that I think are worth mentioning. Omega Five is amazing and Ikaruga and Trigger heart Exelica are pretty good too. There are rumors (I'm not so sure how solid they are) that some of the later cave shooters will be coming to the US in live arcade form. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

I spent more money on the Raiden Fighters series PCb's than what a JP 360 would cost me, I hear there's a boss rush mode for all the 3! Man that would be neat, specially for Raiden Fighters and the 10 mins gigantic boss fights! I love those the most! Shame that Viper Phase 1 didn't make the cut in the collection given that it runs on the same board.

Let me just repeat and assure you that Omega Five is excellent and it's quite different, not quite innovating, yet it manages to give you a quite refreshing experience. I'm surprised this game never pops up everynow and then when folks talk about 360 shooters. Also the degree of difficulty is fair and I can see me 1cc'ing this with more practice.

Even PC has Shikigami No Shiro III. In fact, I was hoping they would start doing PC ports of more of the 'big' shooters seeing the growing popularity of doujin stuff and that mouse-controlled Ketsui clone. Can you picture Cave porting stuff to PC? (yeah, not in a million years...)

PS3 might also let you access some old PSX shooters, including Einhänder and R-Type Delta if I'm not wrong. (please correct me here as I'm not sure about this)

They're on the ps2 and ps1 channel.
Log in to play-asia or ebay, pay, wait a few days and you can play them.
The ps2 can handle most shmups pretty well.
No need for ps3 shmups.

Agreed. Omega Five is awesome! Simply the best original shmup on XBLA.

I suppose I would need a Japanese 360 to play all of these shmups... they don't work on a USA or EU 360 do they?

What about a hardware mod? Are there mod chips or swap discs available?

I wouldn't pick up the PS3 just to get your shooter fix but if you like mainstream games and are looking for a next gen system I think it is worth looking into the route I took. I picked up a Japanese 60GB PS3. All the PS3 games and Blu-ray movies work fine, you can set up all the menus for English, you can set the American PS Store as defult for demos and the like, there are no problems playing online, and the cool thing is that you have full backwards compatability for Japanese PS1 and PS2 games.

Sure, you can't play American PS1 and PS2 games or even DVD movies but most people have a DVD player and perhaps a PS2 already.

an xbox 360 region mod takes mad skilz and equipment.
you can easily hack/mod the drive to play burned games, but only for your region.

It's mostly arena shmups on PSN (Stardust, Blast Factor, Dark Mist, Everyday Shooter, Nucleus, and at some point in the future Power Up Forever). Your choice of traditional scrolling shooters is more limited (1942 Joint Strike, RType 1+2, RType Delta, Einhander, and sometime in the future Soldner X). You can however partition the PS3 harddrive and install mame which gives you access to a butt load of shooters if that interests you.

Right now the biggest bonus of a PS3 for shmup fans, if you have a Jap unit, is the backward compatibility. PS2 shmups can look pretty nice on an HDTV. PS1 shmups look less impressive, to be sure.

Actually, I should have said: the biggest bonus apart from EVERYDAY SHOOTER.

Gradius V, being a 480i game, looks really great in high res.

For me, if I output in 480p, and let the TV upscale to the resolution of my screen, it looks best.

Outputing 1080p from the PS3 looks a little fuzzier.

I just ordered an HDFury HDMI/DVI to VGA converter:

I can't wait to try it on my VGA cab in 640x480 8)

You can also try this.
Turn smoothing (bleh!) on on the ps3 and then turn Sharpness ( ) all the way to 100 on your tv. Work well with 480i 3D games.
You can do this with either upscaled to 1080p/720p, but like you said to 480p looks a bit cleaner.

ps1 games simpluy look awesome upscaled to 1080p on the ps3. :D
Turn smoothing off.

Great to share all this to make all our games look the best they can be. :)

looks great. the best part about this adapter is it's digital to analog. it's just like adding VGA to the PS3. it wouldn't look any better if Sony had done it themselves.

the only drawback I can see is the reported lag when playing PS2 games on a PS3 with HDMI, but I can't tell in Gradius V. perhaps because I'm not using it on a flat panel TV, and that component of the lag is gone.

Super Stardust HD, Dark Mist and Everyday Shooter are okay for the asking price, but as other posters have said a JP 360 (Or PS2) would be a better bet for shmups as it stands.
