Slipped in a note to denote if you used autofire.

edit: Ruldra, could you explain your game settings?

You really shouldn't be playing with autofire off, you know. The 3-way shot is vital in this game, and it's no fun to mash the fire button all the time. I doubt anyone else will play it that way.

If by 'game settings' you mean the rom version, I was playing set 1.

I agree completely on autofire. You'll tire out your hand mashing the three-way at the first boss, and of course you'll have all the other stages to get through still...not fun.

By the way, I think I had my autofire set to 5 in Mame Plus (I can't check because some configuration setting or something has fucked up on me as of last night; need to clear all my CFGs before it works again, most likely). That was fast enough that the regular shot isn't slower than usual, but not so fast that the threeway shots were bunching up (which I don't like).

I should experiment with that more. Possibly should give thought to just going with the fastest autofire setting as well, but I don't like dealing with the dead time (waiting for shots to disappear).

I rarely use the fastest autofire setting, for that very reason. You should always test different autofire rates and find which one is best for each game.

For Outzone, I use delay 4. And I use toggle, as autofire screws up when you use the fire burner.

Might as well dump mine on here!

I played it on the PCB without any autofire... don't really see much reason for it to be honest. I actually just killed myself once I got to loop 3 though, I'm not real big on looping forever and I was hungry.

Maybe someone can confirm/deny this but the Japanese region of the game seems to be considerably harder than the US region. Bosses have a little more life, enemies shooter more often and faster, the usual kind of stuff. I need to spend a little more time testing but that's definitely how it felt, and it wouldn't be unusual at all for a Toaplan game.

I would assume so since that's the way it's been in MAME for a long while (they may have re-ordered the ROMsets or even changed some labels, but some ROMsets are definitely harder than the others).

Just got my first clear after owning the board for four days.

AVE - 144%/Stage 2-4 - 1,918,950 - YES

This was unexpected :D I want to reach at least loop 3, gonna continue playing tomorrow ^_^

BTW, what exactly is needed to trigger the secret boni? Like the formation of Fire Shark jets in Stage 2 after you destroy the brown tank on the right with the small ones coming out (right after it are the only trees in the game coming up). I also got some sort of airplane coming from the left and when I shot it, it became a line of "5000" bonus signs.

Congrats on the clear!

The airplane formation is the one from Daisenpuu. Triggering it is pretty complicated, I believe you need to destroy the the trees according to the last digits in your score. The trees being numbered from left to right.

The spaceship flying across the screen is from Zero Wing. Not sure how to trigger it, but you can do so at many points during the game.

Pipiru, the Toaplan mascot, can also be found in stage one. Repeatedly shoot the hole in a rock next to one of the turrets and he'll jump out. Keep him alive till the end of the stage for a bonus.

We are both wrong, it's from Hishouzame/Flying Shark!

The trees being numbered from left to right? What exactly am I supposed to do, shooting the third tree from the left first if my score is, for example, xxx.300?

Ah, Zero Wing. I haven't really seen it because I realized too late why I got that line of boni.

Cool, I'll have to try that right away. Are there any other known secrets or am I gonna have to buy the DVD?

Another secret--the Truxton ship also appears at one point.

Don't know what the criteria is to get it but it will sort of trail behind the player's last move direction while firing a level 1 spread shot (corresponding to the red weapon in Truxton) at a rather slow firing rate. The Truxton ship can also take several hits before it is destroyed.

AVE - 182%/Stage 2-6 - 2,537,490 - YES (PCB-jp)

Died at the 6th boss in loop 2. Has anybody on this board figured a way to beat him w/out powerups? I died on him once in 2-6 and couldn't recover. The checkpoint is right in front of him, so have to fight him with only three bombs and the 1st form spreadshot. After about four blue-powerball-attacks from his side, he enhances his tactic and the powerball's range is increased. That way the player can't avoid being hit since he's too slow (no speed up) and the boss can't be beaten before the enhanced attack (only three bombs and no power ups). That's so fucked up, isn't there a save spot or something?? -__-

Still, I feel really happy about reaching 2,5m ^_^ My new aim is the third loop, 2nd wasn't so hard (no missed from 2-2 up to 2-6) and if I can manage to do not lose any more lifes in loop 1, I may reach 2-6 with 6-8 lives in stock. Now all I have to do is to survive the sixth boss I guess 8)
