Outzone help

Post by lgb »

I am clueless as to which of these are the correct game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuEcMq1ofqw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBR1mLvHpkQ

The first one seems very identical to the sets in mame, or at least for 0.99. Maybe set 1 changed AGAIN in a future release? Ruldra? Help.

Ruldra's set seems to be the first one. That other guy is a weakling and is probably using set 2 (or something); notice the lack of enemy bullets. Also, you can tell the "prototype" set (still 3?) due to different shooting noises. I didn't listen to that other person's replay; so I couldn't say if that's happening.

I never noticed if the first ROM set in older versions of MAME had the same difficulty level as default, but I think it should have been the same.

tl;dr - pretty sure Set 1 has always been the right set. At the 2D Gaming Forum the OutZone hiscore thread I put up used Set 1.

Speaking of Outzone...

I noticed in one vid that Pipiru, Toaplan's mascot, can be revealed in the first section, and follows you around until you destroy him and he rewards you with 100000 or so points. Also I've seen parts where ZIG from Zero Wing crosses the screen and reveals a line of 5000 point symbols. Anyone found these secrets yet?

Actually, you DON'T kill him for teh bonus. Bring him safely to level 1 finish and recieve a cool bonus.

you can also get emphatics avatar as a secet formation "option" at the beginning of level two.

that and the zero wing plane are completely random, the zero wing plane leaves a trail of 5000 bonus pickups after it so let it fly almost offscreen before you kill it (if you can keep your finger off the trigger that is).

love this game!

Hey man! That "weakling" happens to be me!

That was just a casual showing I made about 2 years ago.

I wasn't aware there were two versions of it back then.

At one point though I did try to practice my ass off and was like fuck it from all the excessive blindsiding in stage 5 and up

...I should mention I haven't gotten terrifically far in Set 1 myself. Actually the number of bullets seems to drop off considerably after Stage 1, so the game is pretty manageable.

What Ed said. Sets 2 and 3 are altered versions, which are easier and has different stage music. You should be playing set 1, which is the one I play.

At the beginning of the stage, when that carrier blows up and tanks start coming out of it, destroy 3 of them and move on. The planes will come to help you out.

Odd. I always take out the tanks and yet I rarely ever see the pranes.

Make sure you destroy only 3 of them. I always get them when I'm playing.

Prototype? That's what I thought. But I've checked that set 1 time and time again, and I am absolutely certain that the set 1 in the newer versions is far different than the old. The set 1 in mame 0.99 is identical to RippleScythe's replay, except different text at the beginning.

This is where MAWS comes in handy:
0.113u4: Changed VSync to 60Hz.
0.104u5: Tormod Tjaberg added Out Zone (set 1). Renamed (outzoneb) to (outzonec), (outzonea) to (outzoneb) and (outzone) to (outzonea).
0.103: David Haywood added clone Out Zone (set 3). Fixed 'Territory' dipswitch and removed 'Unknown' dipswitch.
0.97u5: Aaron Giles swapped Out Zone (set 1) with (set 2) - the other set was a newer revision with more secret bonuses, refined sound effects and a real ending instead of a few text lines. Renamed (outzone) to (outzonea) and (outzonea) to (outzone).
0.61: Changed VSync to 55.161545Hz.
0.37b13: Changed Out Zone (bootleg) to Out Zone (set 2). Renamed (outzonep) to (outzonea).
0.36b8: Quench added clone Out Zone (bootleg).
27th October 1999: Quench added another Outzone romset to the Toaplan driver.
Basically it's a case of mame paradox and now I've gotta find a newer version that has the correct one, aka 0.104u5. I'll update the thread immediately.

So anything past 104u5 should work fine then. Guess I got lucky to play it on wolfmame+ 106.

Pretty much. "Board" updated. Don't think I'm going to bother with it as I had originally planned though.

I had originally thought that Toaplan games had no major changes since they were first cycled into MAME. I must be severely mistaken.

Why are you giving up just like that? Just get a more recent emulator and get cracking!

So, is it two loops, then it ends? I've only finished one loop since buying the PCB. I don't remember seeing an ending in my "glory days". Perhaps I've gotta give ESPGALUDA a rest and play this some more. :?

Nope. It loops infinitely.

And the ending is just like "Congratulations, you beat the game! Let's try again! Come on!"

How do you give up something you haven't started?
