Please post your scores in the new thread here.

My new favorite Toaplan game :D. Just a lovely little shmup, about as simple as you can get and REALLY HARD. You know the rules, full defaults, one credit. I'll get the ball rolling here with my first time reaching level 3, I suppose.

0. Rando's Dad - a freaking lot - 7-8 loops
1. mulletgeezer - 1,285,130 - Area 199
1. yojo! - 1,076,510 - Area 192
2. SAM - 998,450 - Area 163
3. raiden - 760,810 - Area 142
4. Large - 657,060 - Area 97
5. incognoscente - 509,480 - Area 85
6. Tomtom - 408,660 - Area 66

We seem to have some thread duplication:
Another Sky Shark thread

As that thread doesn't seem to be maintaining a score table I'm going to lock it in favor of this one, but you might want to grab the scores out of it.

Tomtom - 230,820 - Level 42

Almost 1-lifed to stage 3, but got sniped by one of the last little tanks. How many sections does each stage have? It kinda looks like 15 or so, as before I was at level 37, which was shortly into the water section of the stage.

EDIT: and I proceed to double it soon after. Woohoo! Alright, time for bed.

I don't have a lot of experience with this game and was sitting at scores of and below 300k for a while--apologies for not spamming your thread ;)

inc - 509,480 - Level 85
With autofire--I hope that isn't frowned upon.

Time to play leapfrog! :)

Nice work there! I came pretty close to 1CCing this today, got most of the way through stage 5. I've beaten my old score may times, but I don't want to spam my own HS thread with a bunch of tiny improvements.

As far as autofire goes, I don't think it makes much difference. Enemies go down far easier in Flying Shark than, say, Truxton, which gives you carpal tunnel syndrome after about 5 minutes. I don't know, maybe I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see if it has much effect.

raiden - 307,110 - Level 49

just got the game today. Incredible trouble getting it to run at first, and now a cup has to hold down the sound volume adjustment to have any sound at all, and I can´t see about 2 inches on the right side of the playing field (have to find a way to adjust my TV tube). But what a great game it is.

raiden - 387,900 - Level 61

sorry for spamming, just read the thread. I promise to update only after some serious improvement, which will probably occur after I get the monitor adjusted, because getting shot from enemies I can´t see is my most common way of dying right now.
I´m intending to install autofire, too, but I think it could give a serious advantage, depending on the way Flying Shark handles this. In 1943 and 1943 kai on the Capcom collection, the hi-rate autofire gives an almost constant stream of shots, causing boss enemies to die MUCH quicker. Having this kind of firepower in Flying Shark would enable me to kill the first boss without using a bomb netting 3000 points per stage bonus, just to give a first example. But I don´t know, maybe the game limits the number of shots on screen? 1942 does that, for example.

I'm not sure of the exact rate of autofire I'm using, but I don't get a continuous line of shots. I use one bomb item on the first boss as I don't like dealing with its final shots and simultaneously the first shots of the small tanks that enter from the left.

Still, 3 default bomb items + 2 picked up in the stage - 1 used = 4 bombs x 3000 = 12,000 points (instead of the possible 15,000). I like the insurance of seeing the next several stages for hundreds of thousands of points instead of a slightly dangerous extra 3,000 points at the beginning. I'm not maximizing score, though, if that's important to you.

Stage 2 I use one bomb item at the aircraft carrier with the bomber plane that fires the 5-or-6 shot spread.
Stage 3 I do not play completely consistently yet. The battleship boss's main turret is the only thing I recall ever bombing.
Stage 4 I often use one on each of the midboss tanks, though I've also destroyed them without bombing. I like to use one when the smaller bombers come in from the top and the bottom a little later into the stage.
Stage 5 I only reach occasionally and have never cleared. I certainly need the practice in stages 3 and 4 first.

As far as spamming is concerned, I don't mind. Not posting my scores was more a matter of pride for me--I knew I could do better than my scores of 272,560; 323,670; 343,550. The first score I got that I was happy with was 357,780 and the score of my next run was 509,480--I was very pleased with this one.
If you want to post more often, that's fine. It might be nice to have to keep at this game so I don't lose my position :)

---
added, from my observations and tests:
First landing strip: area 17-18 [end of stage 1]
Second landing strip: area 35 [end of stage 2]
Third landing strip: area 53 [end of stage 3]
Fourth landing strip: area 73-74 [end of stage 4]
Fifth landing strip: haven't gotten there yet :) area 99 or 100, maybe? [end of stage 5; lap?]

using autofire would be cheating IMO.
Regarding the bomb, I only use it on the last level (when the bombers from behind) and w/ the last boss; the other one are pretty easy to kill once you get used to the pattern.

raiden - 489,000 - Level 77

no autofire used.

there was a point where I had killed a boss and was already about 2 minutes onward, then died and was reset before the boss. "well, good for my score" was the only thing I thought :)
I see what you mean about the bombs, and I made a mistake because you lose all surplus bombs beyond 3 after a stage anyway. Since my PCB still has problems, I often get graphic errors during the game, but even when I can see no enemies and no bullets, I know what to do instinctively for the first few minutes. I can even imagine playing this game with blinded eyes at some point, because the sound gives excellent feedback on what you´re hitting.

Hi everybody!

I'm the first time here on the board. I found it because I am looking for some hints and secrets for playing Flying Shark. I am playing it as a pcb on my cabinet at home and I am wondering why the little grey 1up-biplanes sometimes are coming and sometimes not? What do I have to do to make them coming?

My best score at the moment:
Large - 531.690 - area 82.

Once I came to area 85, but got a smaller score...

Cheers
Large

P.S. Autofire is gay

finally looped the game. Came to the final boss with 5 bombs in stock, but having been there before, I didn´t use them before the support fighters rushed in. Worked pretty well. Into the 2nd loop, I had 4 lives remaining, but once I lost the first, I couldn´t recover at all anymore.

1285130 area 199 USA pcb

Got extremely close to the third loop - killed the last boss on the second loop and then was shot down by one of those damn tanks afterwards. I had quite a few lives left but i just couldn't quite manage it from the restart point.

Not bad for my first time reaching Stage 4. Unless stage 5 is drastically harder than stage 4, I might actually loop this game someday soon.

Does anyone know what makes the gold 1000-point formations turn into silver 1-up yielding formations? I got two 1-ups in one game just now.

No one knows. Raiden and I suggested a few things but none of them could be proved. It's a mystery.

As I get closer to perfection in stage 1 (letting fewer green planes escape to the sides) I'm starting to see the 1-up at the beginning of stage 2 appear more regularly. For a while I thought it appeared if you got over 80000 points in stage 1, but last night I finished stage 1 with 80020 points and it didn't appear.

The one other place I've gotten a 1-up is toward the end of stage 3, somewhere around the big ship. I've only gotten that one once.
