Star Ocean: First Departure worth pre-ordering?...

Post by dave4shmups »

Just wondering if any of you guys have played this first game in the series on the Super Famicom, and whether or not you think it would be worth picking up on the PSP. Are the battles in real-time? The graphics do look nice.

I think he's looking for people who have played the original Star Ocean, which this game is (IIRC) a remake of. I haven't, and have pretty much nothing else to offer, except the notion that you might also want to look for info on what elements of the upcoming game have been tweaked/changed from the original.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm looking for. The graphics have been tweaked, and this impression sounds great!:

Very positive reviews of the SFC original, as well:

Star Ocean? LOVE the series. I'm gonna pre-order this one soon. I've played the original, the DeJap translation I believe, and it was an okay game. One of the first games to introduce the real time battle system, it's a bit rusty around the edges. The story wasn't all that great (big anticlimax) and the battle was only really semi-enjoyable since it was in its primative state.

BUT, the update looks to be pretty snazzy. Adapting the updated fighting engine from Star Ocean 2, all new in-game art and voice acting, and no doubt a revised script (hopefully making the plot a bit more engaging than it was in the DeJap translation.) If you're a fan of Star Ocean, I think you owe it to yourself to pick it up. But in all honesty, if you're short on moolah, just wait for Star Ocean: Second Evolution to come out... especially if you haven't played Star Ocean 2 before. It's a phenomenal RPG that captures you in its atmosphere very well. Personally I'm curious enough to pre-order First Departure 'cause I'm a fanboy... but it looks to be on the level of your typical 'Tales of' title. Which is a series I'm also fond of.

Though I am also intrigued to know that First Departure is also adapting the skill point leveling system, where you allocate points into how your character developes. That was a big aspect of the freedom / customization of Star Ocean 2 which will be interesting to see if Tri-Ace pulls it off in a not so superficial manner. The tri-ace dude says that they want these ports to feel like new games... and I think that's part of Sony's policy.

Hope this helps.

Both PSP ports were rather favorably reviewed at rpgfan.com, if this helps.

The sum of it is that "First Departure" is an excellent reworking of a somewhat less than groundbreaking game (thus bringin it, on gameplay levels, on par with the sequel), while "Second Evolution" is basically a no-frills port of what many consider the best in the series.

PSP nowadays is a Dead Console Walking... Pretty much anything that stands out a little from the nothingness of its market is worth getting.

Yes, it's remarkable how few games are being released for PSP, especially considering that 41 Million PSPs have been sold so far.
