2008 Canadian Elections

Well Harper's feeling confident so what better time to throw an election than when you think you have the best chance at wining?

Conservatives 1 - Democracy 0

and what do the liberals have to say to the Canadian public?

Vote strategically, vote Liberal!

Liberals 1 - Democracy 0

So apparently we have no control on when we get (and don't have) to vote. And the liberals want us to think that it's better to unvote someone than to vote for what you really want. And who can blame them when we have a silly First past the post system where if you don't vote for liberal or conservative then your vote doesn't count.

now that I gave my $0.02, what do my canucks and gaijins think? And if you feel like tellling, who are we voting for?

+1 for NDP. They don't fully represent me and I see them as being childish in their meandering without action. But I don't have hope in anyone else.

Random thoughts.

I think the election is getting nowhere b/c Dion's just too much of an ass. Nobody around here is voting for the guy. Most of us pity him, and that's what the media want since they don't stop showing us the poor chap making horrendous/funny speeches and shooting himself in the foot repeatedly. The guy is pedantic, too overly high class to appeal to the masses.

Then there's the mystery of the Bloc Québécois... When you see the results out there in the West, how do you feel about some of us voting massively for Duceppe? I'll say even right here in Quebec City people start to realize he doesn't/didn't do crap for us... I think the NDP will get more votes this time around...

I'd vote Green if I knew it was going to make a difference. As such in the municipal elections last time around I voted NDP instead. Not that it made any difference there either.

Personally, I'd rather not vote at all since I'm not in a position to over-analyze all aspects of a party's platform to see which suits my life style and opinions the greatest. I'm better of finding a country that I find better suits my ideals which may end up being the case someday anyway. Living in Toronto and Ontario specifically is really beginning to bother me.

well without proportional representation, we are not a democracy.

as for green.... This Article was pretty hard hitting last election. Looks like the Green party have changed for the better. But at best it seems they take a few nice things from the NDP and somehow are able to make them LESS radical. They also miss out on key issues like the uselessness of the senate, the need to end nafta, and protection of our sovereignty in a fight against this North American Union.

I can't believe there's been no mention yet of Bill C-61, Harper's "copyright reform" bill that was introduced this summer. This monstrosity should be an absolute showstopper for anyone reading this who is feeling positive or even indifferent about the Tories, since it would almost certainly turn every single Canadian in this forum into a copyright criminal.

- Have any homebrew software on your PSP or Wii (whether an emulator, a doujin game, or just a cool tech demo)? Under C-61, that's a $20000 fine for bypassing your console's "technological protection measures".

- That Cave shmup you imported, see the "for sale and use in Japan only" label on the box? Under C-61, you're a software pirate for playing it in Canada.

Basically, C-61 (which is now a dead letter, but there's no reason not to expect Harper to reintroduce it, and likely pass it if he gets a majority) would constitute the strictest and most absolutist legal protection for DRM and EULAs of any country in the world. And C-61's just a sneak preview of what you can expect from a majority Harper government.

According to an article that ran in several Canadian newspapers the other day, 40% of Canadians are planning to vote strategically to keep Harper from a majority...

Good call. As a member of the Vancouver fair copy chapter, I should have mentioned that issue as it's so important to me. I've written to my MP, and have attended the fair copy meetings I could, and so far the results seem to be alright. I just wish there was more media coverage and vocalization from the NDP. Not that they haven't been in the past, just that NOW is such an important time. Maybe they feel it's too complicated an issue for the average voter? I can't think of many ipod users who vote....

Many of us down here in the States would gladly welcome a "boring" government as long as it actually, you know, ran things halfway competently (and yeah, I know that you guys up there could tell plenty of horror stories of stupid things your leaders have done that we don't know about, but you'll still have trouble beating us on that front). But, our millionaire media doesn't agree, and does its best to keep elections about anything but the issues, which are, of course, boring...to people who are rich enough to be above it all, anyways.

To offer something semi-substantial, I've always been curious about something - in Canada, is Election Day either a national holiday or held on a weekend or some such thing? Down here elections are always held midweek (Tuesday to be exact), and are not considered holidays - in otherwords, they seem geared to ensure that turnout is as low as possible, especially among those who can't afford to miss a day of work to wait in line at the polls (to likely cast a ballot at a rigged voting machine, but that's another topic). Are things any different up North?

Your employer is supposed to give you a couple of hours to go cast your ballot (by law), but Election Day in Canada is not a proper holiday per se. It's generally midweek, too!
