Image Problems with the Virtual Console
I've been downloading games on the Virtual Console, and with some of these games I get this kind of weird flicker effect going on with the graphics. Super Mario World is a good example.
What is the deal with this? I'm using the red/white/yellow cables, and have not recieved my components yet. I have tried this on two televisions also. Also I have made sure the correct settings were in the screen options(not that the Wii would let me choose anyway).
I read somewhere that getting component cables and setting your wii to progressive scan fixes this problem.
Any hands on experience here?

OK OK, the Wii sucks.
I bought it for emulation though.
Now, i'm having problems with said emulation. I can't believe anyone else has this problem.

Are you 100% sure the original hardware does not have that as well? Until you do, there's no need for posting such vague threads. That being said, I never heard of this. But then again, the wii does scale games very weird to become 16:9 and there is all kinds of weird things going on. I believe the way things are scaled is in the way in which the middle portion of the screen retains the natural 4:3 aspect ratio and the left and right parts of the screen are stretched. I can't stand all these weird solutions, but 99% of the public will probably say: "heck, they made it wide screen, wow!"evil_ash_xero wrote:OK OK, the Wii sucks.

No, the originals don't have the flicker problem i'm talking about. Imagine playing Streets Of Rage 2, and when you knock someone up in the air, the shadow beneath them looks sorta like a rainbow. That's what i'm talking about.

Well, if any of you guys have this game on VC, if you could try out Gunstar Heroes.... Whenever you choose your start stage, the other three stages(that show the boss) are covered in kind of a rainbow colored mess(over the boss' picture).
If anyone could try this out, and see if you have the problem, i'd appreciate it.

I was playing some Space Manbow earlier today, in fact.

Haven't had any issues with the one game (Ys I and II) I've downloaded over the Virtual Console, aka, Me Being a Fool and Paying Money for ROMs that Nintedo Forgot They Had. Oh well, had to show Falcom some support in outside of J-Land.

sorry I was a bit harsh, the other day.evil_ash_xero wrote:I'm not playing it on a widescreen.D wrote:Are you 100% sure the original hardware does not have that as well? Well, it sounds like it is the cabling that's causing this.
Some of us are very anal about cabling and progresive signals and this is why, stupid rainbow effects are just unstomachable for me

All will be fixed when the component cables arrive!
you solved your problem yourself!

I certainly hope so. Otherwise, this Wii is a COMPLETE waste of time and money, rather than just halfway a waste of time and money.

Sounds like signal crosstalk, caused by composite wiring (known colloquially in the US as "RCA cables"). The two symptoms associated with video crosstalk are commonly referred to as "rainbowing" and "dot crawl". A proper TV usually cancels these artifacts out on static parts of the image, but they can still show up in motion. Connecting your Wii via S-video (NTSC), SCART (PAL) or component (EDTV) cables will fix this problem for sure. Dealextreme sells these cables for virtually no money. If you have a standard tube TV I'd recommend S-video or SCART, if you have plasma/LCD I'd recommend component.evil_ash_xero wrote:No, the originals don't have the flicker problem i'm talking about. I played through GH on VC and have never seen that problem.evil_ash_xero wrote:Well, if any of you guys have this game on VC, if you could try out Gunstar Heroes....
