Looks fine to me. All new retro-soundtrack too. That choppy framerate is the crappy compression used for the youtube video, not the game. The game looks more like a 'Gradius Remix' rather than a 'Rebirth' though.

Heh, they used the MSX sounds for the capsules and 1up sounds.

Looks awesome, but I wish they put in specific speech for each weapon like in II.

This looks incredible! Levels 1 and 2 look relatively easy, sure, but difficulty curves have been a problem in a lot of Gradius games (look at stage 2 in Gradius 3), so this might be a good thing. I have confidence it'll get much harder toward the end of the game.

Also, who the hell chooses missile after the first speedup? In every Gradius I've ever played (most of them) it seems like it's always the best choice to go for an option before any other weapons (in 3 for example I go speedup->option->missile, in Gaiden I go for at least two options before I get missile, in V I go for two options before I get laser, etc.) Maybe I'm just INSANE

in GIII I do Speed up, Speed up, missile, option, option, (level 2) option, laser, option, (level 3) force field.
Missiles make the first level much easier. Also, the bubble stage is not that hard. Stage 3 is much harder.

All new retro-soundtrack too
It actually appears to be full of remixes so far, mate. The first stage's theme is "Heavy Blow" from the FC version of Gradius II, and the rest of what I've heard is mostly from the MSX games.

The game looks really nice, if a little homebrewy, but I'm a bit worried about there only being five levels. The GB games had about that many, but it's still a bit jarring here. Really hope this is more of a labour of love that it seems to be...

A couple more videos for you on Gradius Rebirth.

Post by Adigun A. Polack »

Here are a couple of additional video footages for you all right here on Gradius Rebirth, this time from Nicovideo:
And right at the end of the second video that I am showing you here, it’ll say “MISSION ALL OVER!” at the ending screen of this game... did Konami borrow that very phrase from SNK’s Metal Slug series or what? I mean, that is *exactly* what it reminds me of from when the player has cleared all stages successfully... yep, there is a little similarity here that is brewing, you know?

Anyway, do enjoy these two new videos (if you have access to Nicovideo), and thanks!!! :D !

There are some in those nico videos that I don't recognise (although I didn't recognise the tunes in the youtube videos at first due to the poor compression).

Hey, it's the return of the exclusive level from Gradius II PCE.

There are loops. Look at the first NicoVideo vid, the player pics "Replay" from the main menu, chooses a replay and we see the loop breakdown before he starts the replay.

A Gradius game with automatic replay saving? That's kinda cool, I guess.

Hey, you are quite welcome, bcass and Zebra Airforce. Anytime. ;)

Also, at the time I saw those two vids that I presented to you myself earlier today, I noticed right away that this is QUITE the first official Gradius game that has full support for doing your own replays of the game, I can tell. And two-player simultaneous play would have easily kicked some serious ass indeed here in Gradius Rebirth, you know that? :D

As for the music, those remixed tracks (including the one piece that was taken from the final stage of the Famicom version of Gradius II, remember?) do remind me of what they would have been like had they been originally in the arcades back in the day, which to me is not a bad thing at all, actually... I quite like these tracks, seriously!! !

As for replays, I would LOVE to see a full-blown no-miss play of all five stages on YouTube out of you when you pop in this game and play it... come on, better give it all you got!! And if you show it to me on my Shmups Superplay Starbase group on YouTube, hey, I will be happy to potentially add it... no problem!!! ;)=b

So it's only 5 stages? That's quite disappointing.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Oh aye, that boss theme is brand new, as far as I'm aware. Nice! :D

Gradius Rebirth? More like Gradius Rehash. Well, I'd still most likely buy it if I owned a Wii and lived in Japan. Still waiting for the proper Gradius VI though.

The boss theme came from GB Nemesis II. The entire soundtrack is just remixes from the AC/FC/MSX/GB games.

The BGM arrangement is done by none other than...Manabu Namiki. Surprise surprise...lol

Yeah, the entire game minus the cheap ending.

You're welcome.

The sprites look smudgy in the still shots. Sort of like they took the arcade sprites and resized them with bi-linear filtering...

Yeah, I was gonna say. Starting all the way from Gradius II every game in the series has had homages/ripoffs/rehashes (however you want to look at it) from the earlier games' music, stage themes and bosses while still having their own new and original ones. This game is no different at all in that respect. We have some old stuff and some new stuff.

What I'm hoping for is that this is released on the other consoles' online services as well...

That's still the same video as the first NicoVideo one with the player dying (and ending the video) at the beginning of stage five.

The boss theme came from GB Nemesis II.
Oh right, cheers! I recognized the Moai stage theme from that, but I haven't played it in a while.
