STGT 2008 - Week #1 Voting REASONS

Post by sikraiken »

I want to thank everyone who put a reason in their voting e-mail; I read all of them. It was nice to read these while counting all the votes. Some of them are funny, some of them are well backed reasons. I enjoyed them all. I thought some people might want to read them as well, so here they all are. I didn't include any names just in case people didn't want their name attached to theirs for some reason. So, in order of top voted game, and by earliest submission date:

19xx
------

"I chose 19XX because I spend very little time with it, and 7 stages in 30 minutes is better than 16 stages in 30 minutes."

"I find Varth and 1943 Kai a bit too "clunky" feeling, perhaps at least partially due to their age - either way, I feel less "restrained" playing 19XX, especially thanks to the quick-charging missile shot, which ensures I never feel too under-powered and adds a bit of variety beyond "regular" shooting and bombing. It's not as immediately obvious a choice for me as it has been in previous years, but still unquestionably my favorite."

"As for why, the gameplay in this one just seems a bit more refined to me, though the scoring is a little simplistic. Also, helps that it doesnt have a gazillionty stages like Varth does....."

"I vote for 19XX, because it makes me look so much more handsome."

"Its basically the first shmup I played, I want to learn to do decently at it :P"

"I don't like a damn one of these games. 19XX is the most bearable for me."

"Tanks in fucking parachutes"

"Pretty simple reasons really. While I enjoy 1943 Kai, the whole "power ups slowly drain away"-thing has never been a good addition to any shmup IMO. Spending the week worrying about when my weapon will vanish because time has run out doesn't appeal to me. As for Varth, while it's not a bad game, it simply feels plodding. Add in the fact that it takes an hour or more to finish it, and it's not something I wish to endure daily for a week. So, 19XX it is. I've played it a few times, and it's a fun game. It strikes me as a more enjoyable game to be constantly playing since it's medal grabbing and well paced action, mixed with no gimmicks blasting and end-of-round bonuses. Of the three, this one shows the most promise of being a fun scoring run."

"Because it's not horrible like 1943, and it has an alright
scoring system, is easily accessible and fun :)."

"Primarily process of elimination. 1943 Kai and its lifebar are dumb and Varth is an OK game but I couldn't see myself enjoying playing it intensively for a week, so 19XX wins. The fact that it's actually pretty fun to play is a bonus, though I can see the 100% destruction bit causing me to tear out some hair by week's end."

"Shorter than Varth and not as strict as 1943 Kai"

"I'm as awful as awful could be in 1943, and I like Varth about as much as 19XX, but I don't want to, uh, wiggle my joystick."

"It was the only game I hadn't tried before, and I'm finding it extremely fun. I've played 1943 Kai down a local pub quite a lot, and I find it too primitive to enjoy. Varth is slightly more playable, but very boring in terms of graphics and gameplay."

"other games sucks balls of steel aka dumb, boring and shitty.
Also, 19XX the only one capcom shmup what i really like."

"Why? Process of elimination. I don't like 1943 Kai at all, but I do
like the Strikers-ish style of 19XX. The pods in Varth are a neat
gimmick but ultimately fail. Plus, I have a 19XX cab locally that I can
practice on! I always play a bit better on a cab."

"sik told me to"

"It's the loosest playing of the 3. 1943 Kai and Varth just feel clunky and awkward in comparison."

"no annoying fuel bar like 1943
doesnt drag on as long as varth
rewards quick kills versus milking"

"Why?: Planes versus mecha? A gigantic spanish ship called Sancho Pedro ( though I demand a Che Guevara huge battleship)? That and the music is really nice, it wasn't a series I'm familiar with so it was a pleasant surprise. Bosses are excellent. The medalling and rank are interesting and it's challenging without driving me mad with constant chain memorization. Maybe they are common reasons... I think the odd mecha and huge explosions already bought me."

"I pick it because who cares."

"We agreed on this game as a team. Overall, we find it to be the most smooth and enjoyable game of the three choices. The design is solid (stage 5 showcases some of the most beautiful design I've ever seen in a shmup stage), and that lock-on mechanic definitely doesn't hurt. I suppose we're mostly interested in picking the game that is the most fun, because, after all, if you don't have that, it's hard to stay interested long enough to make a good score."

"Feels like the most enjoyable of the
bunch, and somehow reminded me of the Strikers 45 series. Plays "fresh",
unlike 1943 ;)"

"I don't like the handling in 1943Kai, and Varth is too long-winded."

"I chose 19XX simply because it performs so much better than the other
games. It looks and feels better, and oh, it's the "funniest" one to
play. After a while, Varth really started to piss me off with its
surprise "death-from-behind-attacks" (19XX also partly suffers from
this, but it's manageable). 1943 Kai simply is too stale to be able to
even compare to the likes of 19XX. "

"Great game, havent given it the time its deserved."

"Im voting for this cause its the game our team has the most experience with. Its not a fantastic game, but the best out of the three choices and I like it ok."

"Why? I don't like the pod in varth, cant trust it. I blame it whenever I die. Whether it's warranted or not, doesn't really matter. It's irritating anyway."

"It was a close run thing between Varth and 19XX. They both have hidden items, they both give you most of your score at the end of the stage, but 19XX wins out because it has a lot more collecting than Varth, I like the boss time bonus and because I don't like the waggling in Varth and I find the pods distracting."

"No alunperin ajattelin äänestää joko Varthia tai 1943 Kaita koska olen niitä pelannut enemmän, mutta kokeiltuani 1943XX:ää tulin siihen tulokseen että tämän pelin kanssa saattaisin peräti pärjätä...ensimmäisellä pelikerrallani pääsin neljänteen tai viidenteen kenttään. Enkä edes käyttänyt charge shottia. Pitää konfiguroida padi tunnistamaan sekä tavallinen- että autoshot..."
- my rough translation ("Well originally I thought to vote for either Varth or 1943kai because I've played them more, but after trying out 19xx I actually did well... the first time I played the game I got through the fourth or fifth level. I didn't at all use the charge shot. The pad should be configured to both normal and autoshot...")

"It has a nifty charge shot. And stuff."

"Our team believes this game will win the voting, so we are taking a
chance and focusing all of our practice efforts on it. I am voting for
this game to help make that happen."

"Kai just seems a bit too outdated and Varth was pisses me off for whatever reason. Plus I like the lock-on in 19XX and don't think that is is too cheap and that the end-level bonuses are pretty balanced."

"The game that I've played the most during the voting week. At first Varth seemed like more of a funny challenge than the other two, but after more playtime with 19XX and my team forums strategy talk around it, I feel this is the game I wanna compete in. I'm kinda new with shmups and may lack in patience when it comes to learning the games score system before I shut it down cause it's boring. Like in Kai's case. But I'll think I'll get more patience with this in time."

"I like the lock on system."

"I like blowing things up fast. Also, Varth is too long."

"Basically this is what my team wants, and since I may or may not have a lot of time to play this week, I figured I'd just go with the flow. Awesome reason."

"I improve at 19xx with practice, and that is very gratifying. I like the emphasis on offense (killing things before they fire, and using charged shots). And everything looks silky-smooth."

"because it's for the good of mankind! :D"

"it's short and simple to grasp, nice choice for tourney play."

"Varth isn't that great and I'll dominate at any of these anyway - just this one probably moreso."

Varth
------

"I LIKE SHOTS BULLITS AT BAD MAN"

"i'm competent at it"

"I never knew about the stick wiggling, so I want to try it."

"I played this game the other day in an arcade and I enjoyed it so that's
why I'm voting for it."

"All three choices this week are quality games. My favourite is actually
19XX, but my vote goes to Varth for emulation-related issues. The
Lock-on mechanic is too difficult to pull off if you're not playing with
a proper stick. In 1943 I dislike the ever-decreasing power bar and I
find it hard to handle the power ups when playing with auto fire.
Varth seems the best choice because it offers lots of depth and variety
while still maintaining an easy control set up."

"Hello I vote for Varth for this week. Especially because I could stand dying more with this game than the others, and it has nice graphics. (french: Surtout parceque je supportais mieux de mourir dans ce jeu que dans les autres, et il a de bon graphismes).

"The game is very easy to get into, and just by bombing tactically a player can get quite far into the game after just a few goes. However there are lots of scoring opportunities for risk taking, e.g. by not using pods, building bomb stock to 5 and not using them, and perfect scoring a level. I think it would keep players of all levels happy."

"i can't stand the 19xx series"

"I'm just not "old school" enough to enjoy
1943 and from last year I know pretty well that I suck in 19XX. While
Varth has some annoying aspects I still find it fun to play."

"because I do not like the scoring system or the actual gameplay (life system) of 1943 Kai, or the scoring system of 19XX (bonus for 100% destruction)."

"Why? Because I like the shields, and the hidden bonus flags/items. 19XX
is quite cool too, but being able to play on my telly via CCC2 is a huge
advantange point for Varth. Popcorn enemies tend to be a little too
tough for my taste in Kai."

"LOL."

"I picked Varth because I liked the pod mechanic. I also preferred the
pacing of the game better then the other two. The ship movement speed
compared to the enemies and bullets just felt nicer."

"To be honest, my preferred game was 19XX, but the team
leadership thought we should all cast our votes for the same title in
an attempt to get the one best suitable to our skills. There were a
few on the team who thought they could do well on Varth, so after some
discussion we agreed to cast our vote in that manner. I'd never
played it before voting started, and after giving it a bit of a chance
I've discovered it's a pretty interesting game, so I'll be looking
forward to playing it in a competitive environment."

"i like the music"

"It is a good scoring game, which rewards on length of play, and risky
tactics."

"Because it has the best music out of the three and because
I'm not gonna be able to play this week and face the consequences of
my actions"

1943kai
--------

"I chost because I don't want to learn a 60 minute game or a buncha score tricks in a week."

"Voting for the game because it's the most straightforward."

"Because my team agree that is the best game to play on this week."

"To be honest, I liked Varth the most, but it was promptly discarded because it's just too long. It's impractical to play a game that long on a tournament like this. Both 19XX and 1943 Kai are good, but I'm voting for Kai because it's the easiest to score. All the games in the following weeks will have some sort of complex scoring system, so Kai will be good for a simple, brainless survival-based scoring system."

"It's an accessible game with a forgiving scoring system, and it's pretty simple and easy if one knows what they're doing."

"team vote"

"I am voting this game because it was a team decision. Unlike some teammates may be saying, I didn’t enforce this vote to anyone. :D There was a discussion between this and 19xx (Varth was never considered), and we choose this for a few reasons."

"I voted in 1943 because among the three games for this week, 1943 was that I had a good performance. In really I was in doubt between 1943 and 19XX. Varth is very long."

Varth has stick wiggling and its a title that has been unexplored (no ALLs on this forum), unlike 19XX.
STGT should be about previously unexplored games and pushing them.

In my view

agreed, i would have loved to have seen Varth being picked to bits.

almost raizing-esqe in that regard that we dont know anything about the scoring in it (wr is what, +15mil ?)

I'm glad I didn't share my private FEELINGS about the game I voted for wtf copyright infringement

also gg @ retards saying you have to play the game forever so let's play a worse game

that only applies if you can get into the higher (sixth in this game) stages; looking at the scores only half of us have managed it
