Regarding Shenmue substitutes, Alan Wake might fit the bill if we throw away the fighting system.
It at least seems to be an open ended mystery adventure set in a detailed game world. I at least hope so...
But It's hard to say, since there's so little info as of yet.
But a 6+ year development cycle just screams Shenmue! (Or Duke Nukem' Forever, but let's not get too pessimistic)

That too. I can't really say. You can't really say. Nobody can say but Remedy Entertainment at this point. I just hope they'll go the Shenmue route when it comes to investigation, rather than the GTA route, since it would no doubt lend itself more to the environment and the adventure/mystery/exploration they're trying to portray than an empty sandbox with cars in it.JoshF wrote:Nope

Sega goes all Grindhouse on us.
Well at least its not Sonic. Personally I think the trailer is awesome. Although I can't say the same for the actual game. That narrator is just wicked

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
I can say a little bit. I know some of the guys who work at remedy.Nuke wrote:That too. I can't really say. You can't really say. Nobody can say but Remedy Entertainment at this point. Sorry to bust your hopes, but Alan Wake has very little to do with shenmue actually. It has had quite little gameplay so far, but I've heard that they are working hard on adding more and more things to do. I'm not sure how much I can really say without putting my sources into trouble, but it surely will not be anything like GTA or shenmue.

That's both great and crushing to hear. It's great to know that it probably won't simply try to be a horror-GTA in a more rural setting (a fear aroused by a wikipedia article that sourly needs to be updated) but I was kind of hoping for it to be more than a simple action/survival horror type of game.MJR wrote:I can say a little bit. Both it's setting and hinted level of "realism" suggested more.
I was/still am hoping for a game that'll allow me to -live- trough a cinematic live simulation experience (horror mystery in this case) like Shenmue did, but not merely just play trough the action/horror encounters and try to survive them, like I've been doing since games began to feature cut sequences.
And even though the game might have a town "hub" of some sorts I doubt it's immersion factor will be deep enough to satisfy that thirst (at least, if I'm reading between the lines in your post correctly).
But nitpickings and rants aside; I still look forward to the game, being a Max Payne/Horror fan -even though It'll probably not allow any deep investigation in a living, breathing world.
