Movers lose my video game and animation collection

Post by CMoon »

Holy shit! I'm not making this up. I've put in a call with them, wonder what the odds are they'll find it.

Oh, and my stereo receiver broke during the move. I'm not particularly happy right now.

That's not good at all. I don't know how movers deal with everything, but considering that's valuable stuff that went missing there must be something you can do about it.

I have my fingers crossed they'll find it. I can't do anything about broken things--but outright losing stuff is something they don't want to do. Also, as much as I hate to depend on human nature, if you get something delivered that isn't yours, I imagine you'd return it.

Yes, I'm sure I can get a decent chunk of money out of it if the box is gone. Regardless of the contents, I'm sure they'd rather keep their money. It also is bad publicity; losing things and all.

Yes, fuck indeed. The fact that resolving the matter will take time is the worst part. Like me, anyone who may have accidentally received the box may only be finding out today. Also, if it is sitting in a warehouse, it might take a really long time to locate.

Ugh.

I don't know, a box full video games well that's just too hard to pass up.

suuure they "lost" them

dis is why you move the games and collectibles yourself

I don't trust my own family to touch my gaming stuff, why would I let some strangers throw them around a truck?

I wholeheartedly agree. I rarely, if ever, allow my family or friends to touch my prized possessions-- I'd never trust a stranger with them.

But seriously, that sucks. Hope stuff works out.

Oh c'mon, you guys are bumming me out! :?

Well the good news is that I have every box that was shipped here and each was numbered, so I can show which box they've lost and maybe pressure them a bit to actually find the thing.

Edit: Hey, may entire music collection (been collecting since about '89) survived in one piece!

Your whole collection in a single box? Huge box or small collection?

I have to agree with Ed as well. I'd never put my whole collection into a single box and let some random company handle it.

Anyway, good luck to you. Hope you get it back!

Well, it's better than nothing! If they're persistent in wanting to lose it they'll just keep it out of sight, though.

For CMoon,

That is a lesson well learned. It is recommended that you move your prized valuables and collectables yourself. And did you have insurance on them?

When someone has spent countless thousands of $$$ over the years on such video game hardware and software, that is too much money, time, gas spent to acquire them for it to turn up missing.

Perhaps, one of the moving employees decided to keep it for themselves as there are dishonest employees in every business venue. You have to consider the pros and cons of that possible situation.

If that is the case, then it's back to square one of replacing it. Sorry to hear about your current situation, CMoon. Hope it turns up soon.

It isn't my entire video game collection--but it is a lot of it. Don't know what to say about putting it all in the same box; I have a ton of stuff, there's plenty of other things a dishonest mover could take, but didn't.

Yes, there is some sort of insurance on it (not sure what though). As far as moving stuff myself, since I was going by plane, the things I chose to take with me were my computer and cats.

And it is hard to say about any box being more valuable than the others. There are boxes that substantiated large chunks of my music collection. I'm not sure what I'd do for instance, if my entire Japanese psych or New Zealand low fi collection vanished.

I agree with the cautionary notes, but if you are moving across country, you are ultimately stuck with this sort of dilemma. Certainly part of my video game collection/animation collection is NOT my prized possession, but it isn't like I'm going to jump out and replace it either.

I´m chiming in on the ""Lost it", sshyeah right", sadly. I can´t image how movers can lose anything. I doesn´t sound too different from mail getting "lost" or openend. I mean, those were items that have a very obvious resale value. :(

That really sucks, man. I've moved around quite a bit, and invariably I always lost something. No idea how that shit happens, but it does. :(

There's a very big moving company (United Van Lines) located across the street from where I work. The people they employ to do the actual work of moving and driving look like a who's who of ex-cons and knuckleheads.

hehe a friend of mine moved, and a few weeks later his old neighbour called and said he had found "his old box of videotapes".. that was his AES collection (he has everything, EU MS1, Blazing star etc etc).. he was quite relieved to say the least :P luckily the neighbour had no idea of how much cash he was was sitting on.

To be honest, I probably won't replace it. Well, some of the animation I will, but in general, if it is definitely gone (I'll have a better sense by Monday) then I guess that's it. I still love video games, but they've taken a lot lower priority of late, and most movies now you can get easily through netflix.

Heh, still trying to rationalize it...somehow.

I would pay the post office to ship most of the stuff (or UPS/Fedex). Tracking, and insurance. Sure the price might be higher than the movers but at least you can track your stuff.

Well the insurance is a bit tricky, they would ask for proof of the contents' value when you file the claim.

Unless you could show them all your games' purchase invoices, chances are just consider your loss as $10 per used game....

Online purchase is another question, you could alway show them the PayPal payment records.

Insurance company maybe go RARRRR FRAUD (theoretically you could set up a PayPal purchase with a frend 4 defauding on the value of a game, although they are backed up by market values; if you bought from lots of different sellers it's harder to claim that, but if you only buy from other people on shmups, well...)

Well the insurance company would look into the date of the payment sent and the description of what the payment is for.

If the transaction date is later than the post date / insurance policy issue date, there could be a problem.

It's best to have all the details, how much each item within the lost package is sold at, how much is the postage, how much is the tax, how much is insurance, etc.

eBay purchase shouldn't have this problem, since eBay have generate such invoice automatically.

But if you purchase from a forum member, and you sent the money and not specified what the money is for, you would be in trouble when you try to use the record to file a claim.

You could have the seller to issue you an PayPal invoice specified all the details of the transaction. Or you could try put everything into the remarks of your payment.

If all that failed, the seller could still use his original purchase invoice (provide he still have it) to file a claim.

*****************

Anyway, I am lucky that I don't have to file a claim for sale/purchase at shmups forum yet. So I don't know whether the insurance company would accept this proof of content value.
