Do you try to 1CC everything?

Post by Skykid »

Recently, I've noticed I keep trying to 1cc everything. Like a a side effect of shmupping.

For instance, Vampire Killer - finally got my mitts on it, and now I'm playing like I'm trying to 1CC it.
But I'm starting to think that's a bit silly, as it's not really for score, but for completion that you play. I have three continues, I suppose you're meant to use them all. Then I noticed the password system

That makes things a bit easy doesn't it?

All the arcade stuff I play, yes, 1CC, fighters etc. Definitely shmups, and even other wierd MVS titles.

oh god no! There are some games that are just beyond the relms of 1cc unless you spend a lot of time with them.

I doubt theres many people that can 1cc more than a couple of there games. it takes a lot of dedication to 1cc just one of the 90-00 shmups. At least for me I think once i get a new cabinet I will vert it and pick one game at a time to blitz.

theres games I can one life but there console games.

Same. Not many games aside of arcades and their derivatives make sense to 1CC, anyway.

To be honest I doubt I'll ever 1cc anything I just dont have the dedication or skill to be able to do it.

Not only that now I have a fiancée I game a whole LOAD less than I used to so my once awful gaming skills have become utterly dire so whatever chance I may have had has now evaporated to the realms of "when hell freezes over"

Still I am amazed by anything I see on Superplay DVD's that show someone 1cc'ing anything & wish one day I could do it too.

I guess thats why I love 2D fighters so much. Even if you can one credit past the last boss theres still more fights out there to be had with others players. . . . Like being a real life ryu.

Im still not strong enough, is there someone out there who can test my skills? for me there is im above avrage at best at SF3.3

2D fighters & Shmups Yes. Always. Puzzle games, most of the time.

Console stuff, platformers, Side Scrolling Beat-em-ups etc, not a chance. They are far too cheap to warrant the effort required.

When it's in the realm of the possible, I try it. By that, I mean that I wouldn't try not to die on something like MDK2 for DC. I'm currently playing Alien Soldier when I'm tired of shmups kicking my butt and I can see myself finishing it without dying. It's somewhat possible, so why not try it?

Quite fun to wonder... "how far could I have gone with a single quarter?" imo.

Normally I'm just cycling between games and just playing for fun. Then, every once in a while I'll pick a game and say "okay, time to 1cc this bastard" and start playing it seriously (by using savestates, reading guides, watching superplays etc).

One side effect of shmupping, however, is the fact that I use only one credit, even if I'm just playing for fun. Before I played shmups, I normally used 3-5 credits before quitting. Now, I rarely ever continue.

You might as well use a couple of credits on games you're not trying to 1CC. You'll see more of the game that way. It's OK if you do, I won't tell anyone.

what? I can't understand what you said

Ghosts 'n' Ghosts 'n' Goblins 'n' Ghouls 'n' whatever.

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is easier than Ghosts 'n' Goblins IMO. but both games are brutal.

There are few joys in gaming that can match the feeling of going through an entire shmup on a single credit. Getting the 1CC is always a primary goal for me. After that, I work on honing my strategies to maximize score.

I do this with pretty much anything that keeps a score and doesn't feature a save system, as long as it's fair. I've been on an Akumajou Densetsu binge recently, and because I just restarted after my goofier deaths, I can now get through the whole thing (taking any route) without really breaking a sweat.

I think playing in this way is far easier to get into and far more enjoyable than many people seem to think. People who are terrified of the Contra games seem to expect to beat everything on their first go, or something. It only takes a few days to get the hang of any game if you stick with it, and within a week or two (in the case of more or less any well-designed game that isn't a modern shmup) you'll be single-crediting it.

I find it much harder to fathom how anybody gets any enjoyment out of just barely blundering their way to the end of a game and then moving onto something else.

i've started doing that a bit, actually. 1CC first, and then 1CC + good score.

currently working on 4+ million on virtua tennis 1, and 1+ million on super turbo

No, i usually try to unlock storylines and secret characters (in fighters) first, then i try for scores and 1cc's or best times wherever appropriate.

If it's possible in the game, and it seems like it might be fun to try, then I'll try. I usually reserve that stuff for arcade-style games though.

There only are a few games that "forced* me to unlock anything and since i mostly play rpg's, there is a lot of joy in exploring (and unlocking) secrets, quests, tits and whatever, but NOT in playing for speed or score.
