Gigawing Generations - Type X - hands-on impressions?

Post by system11 »

So, I'm thinking of buying GWG on Type-X, I really like the PS2 game but the port makes it nearly unplayable due to all the missing frames giving some bullets the appearance of being a flickbook animation as they come towards you.

Anyway, I know some people here have actually played the arcade version - how rough is it really? How does it compare to the PS2?

i have it, its a fantastic game, if you have a type-x already its a must.

yeah it still drops some frames every now and then but bullets never flickor or pop up at you from nowhere so its not worse than you can live with.

never played the PS2 port so i cant say how it fares against it, i can imagine the lack of TATE really sucks once youve played the original tho.

im really pleased with my type-x anyways, have all the shooters for it and theyre all high quality games, i thouroghly enjoy all of them whenever i play, great system, high-res monitor is absoluteley essential.

Well I don't yet have any of the equipment - I assume I need the game, the motherboard, and an I/O board to play it in a normal JAMMA cab? Legend have had it on their price list for a very long time now.

Man I wish I could find a Type-X mobo in the states. Its just too costly to ship/import from overseas. All those great games are selling for so cheap on YAJ now.

Sven have you tried Spica Adventure?

I don't think Type-X games would look very good at 15khz. Naomi @ 15khz looks like crap most of the time through the I/O board.

I'm on the fence on one of these, mainly b/c I want to play Spica. What is needed to run this shit? Just the I/O Board + the ROM. Wonder if you can run all that shit through a Sigma.

Probably look better than the PS2 port being scaled by a 1080P television ;)

Looks like we need Svens input on what is actually required.

you need the mobo and game ROM (duh) to play in a JVS cabinet (naomi cabs, AWSD cabs etc).

if you want to play in a JAMMA cab or supergun you also need the I/O.
a sega NAOMI I/O works fine if you have one of those. (its just an USB link to the mobo)

and yeah you can play in 15KHZ thru the I/O if you must but the games really look like shit.

one thing to note is that the sound is drawn separatley (not thru the I/O), so in order to get sound out of it you have to plug directly from the speakers to the mobo.

i dont have spicas adventure (my high-res monitor is vertical) so i cant comment on that, all the shmups for the system are quality titles tho and they cater for most interests as well (oldschool, bullethell, etc).

For sven666,

Could you kindly provide some pics of what your Type X mobo setup looks like?

Do you need to use the game's USB dongle key all the time to run it or not?

Which Type X mobo is better: Type X or Type X+ variant?

Can you hook up the Taito Type X tower directly to a PC SVGA monitor and will the highest resolution be displayed at 640 x 480 (or can it be higher than that)?

Thanks in advance for your informative answers as always, sven666... ^_~

cant take pics of it right now, its stuck in one of my cabs ;) but its about the same size of a naomi mobo (only much heavier).

the USB dongle needs to be in when youre booting teh game, i never tried removing it during play so i cant say if it needs to be connected all the time but most likeley not.

type-x or type-x+ is virtually no difference, however type-x2 has improved stats on just about everything, has no effect on how the games run tho. (type-x2 is required for some newer games and backwards compatible so proboably the better choice right now).

you can hook it up to any VGA monitor you like, not sure what the highest possible resolution is.

might aswell add it has a manul-switching PSU so no need to worry about 110/240V, just flick the switch to whatever suits your mains :)

All reports from KillerCabs was that Type-X2 mobo was NOT backward compatible with Type-X games, because of the significant hardware changes.

I think this non-backward compatibility is the reason why the original Type-X mobo is still more expensive than Type-X2...at least prices I've seen on YAJ. Perhaps these latest SSF and other games for X2 will change that.

Just out of curiousity, how much does a Taito Type X mobo go for these days on YAJ?

Type-X does not come up that often as far as I've been looking. Last one I saw was around 70K - 80K yen but I forget which game was with it. X2 mobos I've seen go recently from 20K - 50K, but perhaps something was odd about them being broken or satellite only units from some other X2 networked game.

Type X+ is used only in a few dedicated cab games, like Half-Life 2: Survivor and Battle Gear 4. HL2 Survivor does use a 1360 x 768 mode.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Is there a list somewhere I've missed of all the Type X games (or the shooters?) It's starting to sound pretty interesting.

Has anyone ever seen a Spica Adventure for sale?

All the shooters are pretty good in one way or another:
- Shikigami No Shiro 3
- Gigawing Generations
- Homura
- Raiden III
- Raiden IV

I don't have Raiden IV but all the others are good fun.

when i was in japan (2 years ago, wow time flies!) they had them in abundance in every PCB store (never saw one in any arcades tho), they charged JPY20K for a brand new kit.

i remember i was on teh fence of buying it but opted not to in the end since i already had more type-x kits than i could carry at the time :(

raiden 4 is a stellar game mate, proboably my fave of all the type-x games, if you have the system there should be no doubt of what to get next :)

you guys had me curious till I checked the link and looked at the games.

raiden 3 and 4 have good ports out or on the way. homura and shiki also.

looks like giga wing generations is the only one.

hmmmm, nothing that makes feel the need right now. I have to save my pennies for progear and a mushi 2.

well that and some MVS stuff I've been waiting on.

Piece of piss, as we say. Type X is a PC, its powered from the mains and has a 3.5mm out for audio.

For Strider77,

Well worth saving your valuable pennies for a Progear No Arashi CPS2 board. ^_~

Yeah, too bad X2 isn't compatible with X games. Anyway the seller of that auction is in Japan so you'd still be shelling out loads for shipping. If only I could find a mobo in the states.

Yep, shipping fees from Japan to the USA is very pricey, especially if you opt for EMS shipping method. Might as well bite the bullet and pay up. You know you want a Taito Type X mobo badly, right Dave K.?
