PC ENGINE CD ROM - How long do games take to start?

Post by Skykid »

When I put a game in my PC Engine CD-rom, it takes a long time (nearly two minutes approx) before the disc starts spinning and the game actually starts. I'm using an interface with a 3.0 system card.

Is this normal - just seems to take a while before it does anything (just says please wait a moment.)

Your machine is having issues. You may need a new laser. I had the same thing happened to me when my laser was going in my Duo. Sad but true. At least its repairable.

Hrm, that's a shame. :( It's hardly been used.

It seems okay when the game is running - I don't notice any lag on rounds loading for instance. Only on start-up.

Could someone tell me how long it's meant to take after you push 'run' on startup, just so I have a frame of reference?

Thanks!

This should probably be moved to hardware. On a Duo-R series, the actual loading of a disc probably takes around 3-5 sec. depending on the game. Well, I guess that doesn't really help since it's not the same as a base PCE-CD.

I have my own related PCE-CD question though. Sometimes (maybe once out of 20 times), my Duo-RX loads much slower than normal in-game (like up to 10 sec. slower than normal where the laser is inactive). Now, it's been this way for years without any other hitches and it hasn't gotten any worse, better, more frequent, or less frequent so is this normal or is something up? If so, what's the most likely culprit?

I can't answer specifically on the PC Engine CD-rom, but my Turbo Duo used to stall quite frequently with the 'wait a moment' message displayed. A very mild slap served to revive it in such instances (or a kick if I couldn't reach with my hand). It would then spring to life and start accessing the disk. PCEngine Fan X! would shudder at the thought of these actions, but they always worked. :)
A slap or kick to the ol' Turbo Duo? I wouldn't even think about doing either with mine. It still works like a charm even after having bought it brand new back in November of 1994. Treat a Duo console with the proper respect and it will last you a good awhile. The laser reader on mine still works flawlessly after all these years. ^_~

It seems to take a few seconds loading on drac x when loading the next part of the level. Can't tell if this is normal or not. Black screen for about 2-3 seconds. I can hear the disc accessing. :?:
