PSN Shooter advice

Post by lawnspic »

Got my Ps3 a while back, and have yet to buy any of the shmups available for download in the PSN store. What would you guys suggest as a good starter. Stardust maybe? or 1942? Need some help here. Thanks

Every Day Shooter is decent fun. I would recommend against anything that wasn't developed specifically for the PS3 though.

And they are? Also what are your thoughts on Stardust?

Stardust is 400Y on the JPN store at the moment (as Star Strike HD). Go grab the demo.

Stardust is asteroids on steroids. Personally I like it but to be perfectly honest the gameplay gets old and the games last too long. Its worth the money for 15 or 20 hours entertainment though.

The last time I played I had tears coming out of my eyes because my eyes were cross haired on the screen for 1 hour and 40 minutes solid. And I still came about 20,000th on the high score board. Someone out there must be playing a game for a month at a time as the highest score is like 14 digits long
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Aren't the PSX classics the wrong aspect ratio or somthing? Even so, it's not that much of a big deal to me and theres a load of shmups on the JP PSN store well worth checking out (R-type Delta, Cotton 100%, Raycrisis, Raystorm, Raiden etc).

Everyday Shooter is a must, Stardust is a great game too - but I concur with neorichieb1971, the games go on for too long.

Super Stardust HD is all kinds of awesome. The standard arcade mode is just a war of attrition though, as it loops forever.

Dark Mist is alright, but starts out too slow and goes on for a long time. Once you’ve completed it you unlock other game-modes and they’re much better than the default one.

Everyday Shooter is more arty pretension than game, but it’s enjoyable enough for the price.

It can have an affect on timing. Consider the difference between playing Gradius Arranged mode vs. Gradius Original mode on the PSP. If I'm accustomed to the timing of Arranged mode (wider play area with more time to react), I would have--and am having for that matter--a harder time adjusting to the Original aspect which requires more precise timing.

This could have a huge impact on games where the aspect ratio has been cut but nothing has be done to the design to compensate. The game could become more difficult or frustrating than originally intended.

It's just squeezed, the games are running under emulation. There are no such issues.

(There's a free game on the HK store, the XI demo, if you want to see how it looks on your TV. I have yet to find a screen that lets you figure out where the borders are, though.)

Bah, your right. I went to the thread I pulled my information from and reread it. My humblest apologies

Strongly disagree. I played (probably) every arena shooter out there (consoles and PC) and to me Everyday Shooter is by far the best one.

1. Very solid and rewarding chaining system that changes from stage to stage!
2. Even if you had a bad run nothing is wasted because collecting points lets you unlock lots of cool gimmicks and levels which is a nice touch.
3. The best soundtrack in any arena shooter so far. Chain explosions create sound feedbacks that add to the groove, very satisfying if you're in the zone.
Yes, ES takes lots of inspirations from other games but the overall mixture really works imo. Great game, also available on PC via Steam.
