Any idea how stable the later 360's are these days? I'm slowly buckling to the pressure of 360 shmups but it'll involve importing a 360 from Japan because it's not region free which is going to cost a bucket load of cash so I really dont want to see a red ring.

Read that the fixed the heat issues, that lead to RRoD, with the new Falcon 65nm GPU that reduced heat. In the new 60gb versions they added a different type of ram chip and moved them to a new location on the board to lessen heat.

It's a lot better but I dont know if it eliminated the RRoD entirely.

The newer ones don't tend to RRoD that often.
Just make sure it doesn't overheat.
So i wouldn't recommend all night long playsessions.
I have my second old xbox360 now, and both didnt die on me.
And they are both in use for over 2 years.

Mine was built in 2006 but reconditioned after a motherboard failure. Been okay ever since - i've left it on for 2 days solid (mostly without playing) - then carried on.

Mine never RROD though - the graphics chip died.

There's already a Raiden IV thread.

i wouldn't worry about the new ones red ringing, as the new chips run a lot cooler. the real problem though is the x-clamps MS uses to attach the heatsinks to the pcb. they flex too much when they heat up and it causes the chip legs to yank themselves right off the board. my 360 actually red ringed on my about 3 weeks ago and i did the x-clamp mod and it's good as new now.
