^^^They are all quite good. I think his first proper three full length albums are his best. Check out the two I mentioned at begining of the thread first. Out From Out Where and Supermodified are also excellent.

I thought the Splinter Cell stuff was his weakest release but I wouldn't really include it in his proper line up anyway.

Well, his early stuff is mostly d'n'b-ish, very influenced by jazz and latin stuff like samba (he's Brazilian). The further it went, the more experimental and quirky his sound became; the rhythmic structure shifted from d'n'b closer to breakbeat, and later, IDM.

It's hard to say which of it is better; I, for one, prefer his more experimental output (2000's "Supermodified" and 2002's "Out, From Out Where"), while many others like his early output ("Bricolage", "Permutation", and "Adventures in Foam" released as Cujo).

Here are some examples of his later stuff (via YouTube):

Four Ton Mantis
Marine Machines
Verbal
Chronic Tronic

Yeah Briclolage especially has the whole jazz vibe running through it. I just recently managed to get my hands on Adventures in Foam a few months ago (not easy to come by here in the states). Pretty good although it seems a little too horn sample happy for my tastes.

I am even starting to come around to Amons latest release although it did take a while.

Edit: I love Four Ton Mantis

I have to say that drum & bass is completely stagnant and really hasn't moved anywhere in the last five years or so. Breakcore is the future of extreme electronic music and while it may not live up to its lofty aspirations as a hybrid ideology anti-genre, it certainly leads to some eclectic results.

I defy anybody not to appreciate the genius that is Ventian Snares' Rossz Csillag Alatt Született. Seriously, ranging from ear-metlingly aggressive drum loops, to Billy Holiday-sampled trip hop to Elgar -- even people that don't dig breakcore love this album. To echo szycag's comments, Venetian Snares is so prolific and covers such a huge array of styles that I couldn't unreservedly recommend all his work, but I'm sure you would appreciate some of it.

My recommendations include:

Aaron Spectre/Drumcorps (incredible ragga/jungle/hardcore metal mash-up. Mind blowing live performances too.)
Boing-ra (as above but oldschool heavy metal infused)
Dev/Null
Ladyscraper (really brutal  )
Otto Von Schirach (broken, distorted beats)
Sabrepulse (we're more into chip tune territory here, but the ammount of video game references (Warning Forvever, King of Fighters) warrants it's inclusion on the shmups forum :D
Shitmat (lots or ragga)
Venetian Snares

Skykid, if you want I can put a CD together of the more palatable breakcore tracks in an attempt to bring you over to the darkside. Alternatively you should come to the next Bangface event with me. They've recently added a D&B room if the breakcore gets too much for you, but I reckon you will feel it.

Ignoring the hard stuff, I have to second (third?) that recommendation for Bricolage. Amon Tobin is awesome.

pshht, "breakcore", they are constantly coming up with ridiculous new genres within genres, i doubt this "breakcore" is anything different to what Coldcut and the likes were doing in the mid to late 90's..

Feel free to do me something palatable then dude, I'm willing to give it another shot. I didn't dislike venetian Snares, but I just found it a little brash compared to the moody D&B I so like.

I do agree that there's been sweet FA on the scene for ages that's worth looking into though. :(

There are some tracks on the OST release on Galbadia Hotel which sound good (I like the intros/extros for the Ruthless tracks, and also the Kokubo Sosho regular/fight tracks), but the mixes are compressed and also odd. I liked being able to just listen to each variation of the track via the game's soundtrack menu, but that was cumbersome (also, starforce bad).

After listening to it for a month (or two?) the oddness of the compressed mixes - and not just that but some of the weird effects mixed into the music - made it boring to me (well, that and the fact that I played it to death).

In any case, I had fun with it for a long enough time so I'll have some hopes for the other releases which I'll track down shortly. Thanks!

Um, well, breakcore isn't exactly new either. To be exact, it's about 10 years old. It's just that it was originally very experimental in nature (and as such, hard to get into for the first few years for both artists and listeners), and its obvious it would have surpassed the inititally limited, formulaic genre d'n'b is. It'll become mainstream very soon, just as it happened with post-rock, IDM, and pretty much every experimental genre that emerged in early/mid-90s.

It's normal (not to say necesary) for any music genre to become mainstream, be improved upon with a less limited/more experimental approach, and repeat the cycle. No need to scoff at it.

Check out KJ Sawka.

His music is good, but his endurance during extended live performances impresses me even more. He plays drum 'n bass with an actual drum kit... I have no idea why that should be an oddity in the genre, but it is.

And, of course, Photek. No particular album, it's all great stuff.

The quality is very low, but there are lots of great beats from great dj's.
Well, quality is better now!
Check out Crissy Criss. He spins some really nice dnb tracks.

I think a good place to start might be with the Drum & Bass Arena: 50 of the Biggest Drum & Bass Rollers Ever album. Has plenty of classic tunes and it’s very well mixed.

I’ve been listening to Dom and Roland’s new album Through the Looking Glass. Disc 2 is really great; I like the track Sparta on it despite the kind of cheesy 300 references.

Be sure to check out Dillinja’s – Cybotron, it’s an oldie but a goodie, has some top notch tracks on it like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LudKT6g ... re=related

I just wanted post this one, probably my favorite old school dnb tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQFXneSR ... re=related
