ColdStorage!...

Post by dave4shmups »

Just found out about this British group; this is my favorite track in Wipeout Pure:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR_uQJSy6oU I always like the techo tracks with a lot of synth and "folow", like that track, rather then the "bumpbumpbump" style of techno.

On their website, they list tracks for the first Colony Wars! Although, those sound more orchestrated.

Cold Storage? You mean those guys that have been around for decades, that did stuff for the very first Wipeout?
Christ, that brings back memories.

Cold Storage is a bit too "ambient" for my taste, but certainly not bad. My favorite songs from them are "Around you" and "Body in motion" (from Wipeout 2097).

Group? I think it's pretty much Tim Wright alone. Quite a familiar name in the shmup scene too (Agony...)

Always liked Cold Storage's contributions to the Wipeout games, very fitting.

Cold Storage is a group formed with Psygnosis members...

Body in Motion is their best track!

what wipeout should I play if I'm not familiar with the series? I guess one of the psp ones is as good as any, but I was reluctant because I hate using that analog nub
That is Galactic Dancing

That's a great question! I'm a really big WO fan since the 1st game!

1st WO: really freat game but very hard dur to the playabilitywhich doesn't permit any error but the music is great!

WOXL/2097: The best WO to play, intense gameplay, insane tracklist (Prodigy, coldtorage, chemical brothers, fluke, etc...), and probably one of the best PS1 game!

WO3: Really good game with improved graphics but I'm not really fan of the global game...

WO64: Very nice 64 game with 2097's interface and playability! Great sounds with the Propellerheads's "Bang On" full track on the N64!

WOFusion: Good game but too far than the other games! The worst WO for me...but there's many fans of it...

WO Pure & Pulse: Very great games and playability back in the time! You must play them!

For the WO1 and XL, it's better to take the PS1 version instead of the Saturn versions (better graphics and the Sat version misses some tracks and replaced by many coldstorage tracks...)
The PC version of XL has better graphics and now has some online mod(e)s! Tracklist is the same than the Sat version!

Ken and I are actually in agreement - 2097 still represents the pinnacle of the series. The depth in mechanics to each ship is incredible, and when you're wielding a qirex like you never thought you could, there's little to touch it.

It's got the best tracks, best atmosphere, best handling. Wipeout 3 is overlong and a bit loose. Wipeout Fusion is much the same, but far too loose in handling and tracks are too wide although the graphics are mint. Get's boring though.
PSP Wipeout pulse is good, but doesn't come off as well as it should on a handheld. Some of it is extremely frustrating (like impossibly so.)
Pulse I'm yet to play.

European version of 2097 or JP XL are best (but seeking XL is unecessary) I know strider likes the US soundtrack, but it's nice to have the variety instead of all cold storage.

There's nothing wrong with the original btw - it's looking dated, but still has bags of atmosphere and challenge, and is totally playable.

Interesting, has he done any US-shmups, or only Euro-shmups? I can't wait for Wipeout HD!

Whats the difference between the japanese and US XL?

I was talking about wip3out 1 as far as soundtracks go. I liked th US soundtrack the most in the 1st wipeout game but still bough the euro soundtrack for the 1st one also.

The Saturn version of XL has one option the PS1 does not: Analog control.

Though it is trumped by the special Euro edition of 2097.

No, I don't think so, but he recently did a fantastic arrangement of his Agony intro tune for the third "Immortal" CD.

Casual Wipeout players agree 2097 being the overall best, but Wipeout conoisseurs know that the absolute best is Wip3out Special Edition (Eu only).

Ok, interesting. I thought Wipeout XL was the most popular; 2097 was Europe-only, AFIK.

QFT. Although Wipeout Pulse is hot on its heels.
(And Wipeout HD, if it turns out to be good.)

Is Pulse worth to get? I thought Pure seemed the best value for money of the two...

Sorry, boss, but no. Wip3out and its SE suck balls. I made a post at a certain crappy WipEout forum called "10 things I hate about Wipeout 3" and I still stand by it. While taking a break from Pulse (and waiting for HD) I ended up playing some more Wip3out on my PS3 and I managed to unlock Phantom class, but I didn't care about the game enough to continue. It's just not fun!

As for WipEout Pure VS WipEout Pulse, definitely get Pure first, then get Pulse to see how much better it is. People think that Pure is "better" than Pulse because of the loads of free content, but the core game isn't as polished as Pulse. That's like saying Soul Blade is better than Soul Calibur because Soul Blade has things like multiple soundtracks and better endings. And let's not forget that Pulse has online play (especially at 8pm GMT on weekdays and 11pm GMT on weekends).

EDIT: I also want to say that this thread had perfect timing  - I was checking out Tim Wright's page just a few days ago, and I was searching for the non-PS1 versions of WipEout and WipEout XL just so I could hear the different music.

I'm not really sure how to reply because what would make 2097 stand out in comparison to 3SE is pretty much music. Wip3out is more polished gameplay-wise and come on... Analog control was a godsend. But then again everything seems to fit, as I happen to prefer Soul Blade to its watered down Calibur spawn. :)

I thought Wipeout 64 had analog control first...?

Yes, but with W3SE we're talking about sixteen regular tracks with eight including the best ones from W1 and W2097... It's clearly a winner package.

It was possible to play also the older Wipeouts (1 and 2097/XL) with the Namco neGcon, which is as analog as it can get. The neGcon was probably the best idea for a controller ever.
